To the Library and Beyond We have many fresh books on the new arrival shelves for you to enjoy. Joan declares the book, Ship Of Gold In the Deep Blue Sea, “a very interesting read!!” It was a “best seller” in paperback and hardcover when published in 1998. Gary Kinder tells this story of the 1857 wreck of a paddle-wheeled steamer ship about 200 miles east of the North Carolina coast. Returning from the California gold fields, more than 400 lives and twenty-one tons of California gold were lost when she sank. Kinder updates the tale with the 1980s expedition by engineer Tommy Thompson using sonar and the special recovery vehicle needed in the 8,000 feet deep ocean. When Thompson and his crew recovered the gold, it was worth about 150 times its value when lost 130 years before. Library volunteers may be planning or promoting fund-raising activities for the Library. “Volunteering helps us build our networks and improves our physical and mental health and wellbeing.” January 12 we begin Universal Letter Writing Week. Thursday 16 is nationally celebrated Religious Freedom Day. Saturday 18 is National Thesaurus Day, remembering the birthdate of Peter Roget. In 2018 Prairie Community Library loaned 2,198 items, and in 2021 Story Hour attendees included 719 children and adults. The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to partnering with all who complement our mission and purpose. Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.
