Pirates lose twice The Prairie Pirates lost a pair of league games this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, they traveled to Lapwai and lost 50-58. On Friday, Jan. 17, they hosted Kendrick and lost on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer 60-61. At Lapwai In the game at Lapwai, the
Wildcats jumped on Prairie for a 0-6 lead. The Pirates got on the
scoreboard when Nate Forsmann converted a 3-point play at the 5:19 mark.
Levi Gehring then went full-court with the ball for a lay-up to cut the
lead to 5-6. A Lapwai basket was answered with a lay-up by Briggs
Rambo. A Lapwai was answered by a 3 by Forsmann.Lapwai then made another 3 before being assessed with a technical foul. Phil Schwartz made both free throws and then Gehring scored to tie the game at 14. Lapwai scored then Forsmann made a free throw and Rambo made 2 free throws to give Prairie their first lead of the game at 17-16 with 2:05 left in the quarter. Each team scored again with Gehring putting Prairie on top at 19-18 at the end of the first quarter. Rambo scored to open the second quarter and give Prairie what turned out to be their biggest lead of the game at 21-18. Lapwai then scored 7 straight points before Forsmann scored on a putback. After a Lapwai basket, Forsmann scored again on a putback and Matt Wemhoff followed with a midrange shot to tie the game at 27. After a Lapwai free throw, Rambo scored a pair of baskets as Prairie equaled their biggest lead at 31-28 with 49 seconds left in the half. A Lapwai 3 quickly tied it but Forsmann put Prairie back on top with a lay-up with 8 seconds left. Lapwai then drove the floor for a lay-up at the buzzer to tie it at 33. The third quarter was the killer for the Pirates as Lapwai came out and hit two 3’s and added a lay-up for a 33-41 lead. Prairie broke the run with lay-up by Rambo at the 5:42 mark. Forsmann and Wemhoff each added a basket to cut the lead to 39-41as Prairie appeared to be getting back into the game. Lapwai then scored 8 straight points, 6 of them at the free throw line, as they built at 10-point lead at 39-49. A 3 by Schwartz made it 42-49 at the end of the quarter. Prairie rallied to tie it to open the fourth quarter. Schwartz scored on a drive for a lay-up. Rambo hit a short turnaround in the lane and Chase VonBargen made a 3 to tie the score at 49 with 6:22 to play. Lapwai answered with a 3 and Prairie responded with a free throw by Forsmann with 5:06 left. That turned out to be Prairie’s final point of the game as Lapwai ended it with a 0-6 run. Forsmann wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 16 points. Rambo scored 14 while Schwartz scored 7, Gehring 6, Wemhoff 4 and VonBargen 3. Lapwai had a 30-31 edge on the boards. Rambo led the Pirates with 8 rebounds. Rambo also led in steals with 3 and Gehring and Schwartz each had 4 assists. Prairie was 20 for 52 from the field, 38%, and 7 for 8 at the line, 88%. Lapwai was 21 for 47 from the field, 45%, and 9 for 15 at the line, 60%. Lapwai won big in the JV game 44-58. Lapwai jumped out to a 0-12 lead before Ben Secrest made 2 free throws to put Prairie on the board. Lapwai then scored 7 more for a 2-19 lead before Max Rehder made 2 free throws. After a Lapwai basket, Rehder added a lay-up to make it 6-21 at the end of the first quarter. VonBargen opened the second quarter scoring with a 3 that was answered by Lapwai. Kade Quintal scored a midrange shot. Lapwai then scored 10 straight before Secrest scored a lay-up. Lapwai added a another 3 for a 13-37 halftime lead. Prairie fell behind 15-41 in the third quarter before putting together a run. Rehder converted a 3-point play then Caden Armbrust scored inside. Quintal added 2 free throws to cut the deficit to 22-41. Prairie was then able to only score after a Lapwai basket the rest of the quarter. Rehder scored on an inbounds play. Nathan Weber scored a lay-up. Quintal hit a 3 and then Stetson Hankins made a free throw. Hankins was shooting for Quintal who took a hit from Lapwai and appeared woozy. Lapwai led 30-54 after 3 quarters. Lapwai scored first in the fourth quarter then Prairie put together their best stretch of the game as they scored 11 straight points. Rehder made 2 lay-ups. Phineas Fitch scored a free throw. Weber scored after a steal by Armbrust. Fitch added a pair of baskets to get the lead down to 41-56. After a Lapwai basket, Kento Morita sank a 3 with 6 seconds left for the final points of the game. Rehder scored 13 to lead the JVs. Quintal scored 7, Fitch 5, Armbrust, Secrest and Weber 4 each, Morita and VonBargen 3 each and Hankins 1. Lapwai had a 35-44 rebounding edge. Rehder led Prairie with 9 rebounds. Secrest had 3 steals and Quintal had 5 assists. Prairie was 16 for 48 from the field, 33%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%. Lapwai was 24 for 66 from the field, 36%, and 0 for 5 at the line. Vs. Kendrick The home game against Kendrick was a back and forth affair that saw the lead change hands 16 times. Kendrick got off to a strong start as they jumped out to a 2-9 lead with Prairie’s only points being free throws by Rambo.Prairie then put together a 7-0 run to tie it. Wemhoff and Riley Shears each scored a basket and Forsmann sank a 3 to tie it at 9. Kendrick scored a free throw and a basket for a 3-point lead but a lay-up on an inbounds play by Forsmann and 2 free throws by Rambo gave Prairie their first lead of the game at 13-12. The lead changed hands 5 more times by the end of the quarter. Kendrick scored then Forsmann answered on another inbounds feed. Kendrick scored again but Rambo scored on a tip-in. Kendrick then hit a 3 to close out the first quarter with a 17-19 lead. Kendrick scored to open the second quarter but a 3 by Schwartz and 2 baskets by Rambo put Prairie on top 24-21. Prairie led most of the rest of the half as a putback by Rambo and a drive for a lay-up by Shears kept them in the lead. Kendrick tied it at 28 then Rambo scored twice for a 32-28 lead. Kendrick answered with a 3-point play and 2 free throws for a 32-33 lead with 22 seconds left in the half. Rambo then gave prairie a lead at the half with a lay-up in the final seconds. Kendrick tied it to open the second half with a free throw but Rambo scored to put Prairie back on top. Kendrick scored 5 straight for a 36-39 lead and held the lead through the rest of the third quarter. 4 times Prairie got within 1 on 2 baskets by Wemhoff, a lay-up by Forsmann and a lay-up by Rambo with 7 seconds left that made it 44-45 at the end of the third quarter. Prairie finally took the lead back on a basket each by Shears and Gehring to open the fourth quarter. Kendrick then tied it with a 3. Forsmann put Prairie back on top with a free throw. Kendrick tied it with a free throw. Wemhoff scored to put Prairie back on top but Kendrick tied it. Shears scored but Kendrick answered. Another basket by Shears was answered with a 3-point play by Kendrick that put the Tigers on top for the first time since the quarter started. A steal by Wemhoff put Prairie back on top with 1:15 left. Kendrick scored with 59 seconds left to retake the lead. With 32 seconds left Schwartz hit a 3 for a 60-58 lead. With 5 seconds left Kendrick missed a shot and Shears grabbed the rebound. Prairie took a timeout and inbounded to the right of Kendrick’s basket. Schwartz went with a long inbounds to the Prairie end but the player he expected to go deep didn’t and Kendrick got the ball. They passed it to the wing and Kolt Koepp’s 3-pointer at the buzzer swished for the game-winner. Rambo led the Pirates in scoring with 22 points including a 7 for 7 stretch from the field in the first half. Wemhoff, Forsmann and Shears each scored 10 points while Schwartz scored 6 and Gehring 2. Kendrick had a 26-33 edge on the boards, including 7-20 in the second half. Forsmann led the Pirates with 7 rebounds. Wemhoff had 8 steals and Forsmann had 8 assists. Prairie was 26 for 56 from the field, 46%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Kendrick was 23 for 46 from the field, 50%, and 10 for 15 at the line, 67%. Prairie is now 7-5 on the season and 2-4 in league play. Kendrick easily won the JV game 18-50. Kendrick scored first and Prairie tied it on a drive by Quintal. Kendrick took the lead for good with a 3. Prairie answered with a lay-up by Jackson Enneking. Prairie added a lay-up by VonBargen later in the quarter but trailed 6-13 at the break. After a free throw each by Quintal and VonBargen, Prairie trailed 8-19. Kendrick the scored 9 straight before Quintal made 2 free throws to make it 10-28. After another Kendrick basket, Rehder closed out the half with a 3-pointer. Kendrick scored the first 10 points of the third quarter before Quintal, Weber and Enneking each scored a free throw to finish the third quarter. Prairie trailed 16-40 at that point. Kendrick scored 5 straight in the fourth quarter before Quintal scored Prairie’s only fourth quarter points following a steal. Kendrick then scored the final 5 points of the game. Quinal scored 8 to lead the Pirates. Rehder, VonBargen and Enneking each scored 3 and Weber scored 1. Kendrick had a 27-39 edge on the boards. Rehder led the Pirates with 7 rebounds. Rehder had 3 steals and 1 assist and VonBargen also had an assist. Prairie was 5 for 40 from the field, 13%, and 7 for 13 at the line, 54%.
