This week we are presenting Joan’s special treat and one of our favorites. In Hillbilly Elegy, published in 2016, J. D. Vance recalled many formative life experiences during his boyhood years (1950s & 1960s) growing up in Middletown, Ohio, a “rust-belt” town in the steel-producing area of Ohio. Mainly, he portrayed his family, including his grandparents, who had migrated to Ohio from the impoverished area of eastern Kentucky; he revealed the culture of that part of Kentucky to be miserably poor with widespread violence. We truly appreciated this book about the Appalachian and Midwestern U. S. This month Library volunteers may be researching grant applications. “Volunteering helps us explore our interests and helps improve our self-esteem.” Monday 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and in Canada, it is Family Literacy Day. In 2020 Prairie Community Library loaned 2,178 items; in 2019 we added 779 items to the Library collection. The mission of Prairie Community Library, Inc. is to serve the literary needs of our communities, and our mission will always be the same regardless of the changing needs of patrons.
