Lady Pirates beat both Lapwai and Grangeville within 5 days
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 4 games this past week, 2 of them against a
couple of the best teams on their schedule. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, they
hosted Troy and won 72-18. On Thursday, Jan. 16, they took over sole
possession of first place in the league with a 55-49 win over Lapwai at
Cottonwood. On Saturday, Jan. 18, they won 74-34 at Kendrick. Finally
on Monday, Jan. 20, they won 57-56 at Grangeville. It has been quite some time since the Lady Pirates beat both Lapwai and Grangeville within such a short time span. Vs. Troy Prairie raced out to a 33-6 lead after the first quarter against Troy as they went on to win by 54.Prairie led 47-13 at the half and 65-20 after 3 quarters. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Lexi Schumacher tallied 25 points and six steals while Sage Elven added 20 points and eight rebounds. Kylie Schumacher added 12 points and 7 assists with Hailey Hanson scoring 9 and also having 7 assists. Aubree Rehder, Nadia Cash and Ellie Nuxoll added 2 each. Lapwai In a battle of teams unbeaten in league play to that point, the Lady Pirates led by as many as 13 points before winning by 6.Lapwai scored first on a pair of free throws but Prairie tied it on a lay-up by Kylie Schumacher. After another Lapwai basket, Prairie took their first lead. Sage elven scored on an inbounds play to tie it and Lexi Schumacher made a pair of free throws for a 6-4 lead. Lapwai took back the lead with a a 3 and added a free throw. Kylie Schumacher tied it with a lay-up but Lapwai took back the lead with 2 free throws. Lexi Schumacher made the second of 2 free throws then Hailey Hanson put the Pirates back on top with a 3. Lapwai took back the lead with a 3 of their own but a pair of baskets by Elven put Prairie back on top 16-13. Lapwai scored to make it a 1-point game at the end of the first quarter. A steal by Lexi Schumacher led to a lay-up but Lapwai answered with a 3-pointer to tie it. Prairie came back with a 3 each from Lexi Schumacher and Hanson for their biggest lead to that point, 24-18. A free throw and a 3 cut the lead to 2 but a basket each by Nadia Cash and Kylei Schumacher pushed the lead back to 6 at 28-22. Lapwai scored a pair of free throws but a basket each by Hanson on a drive to the hoop and Kylie Schumacher of a feed from Hanson made it 32-24, Lapwai made 2 free throws in the final seconds to make it 32-26 at the half. Lapwai scored a free throw to open the second half but Prairie then scored 6 straight for a double-digit lead. Elven made 2 free throws. Kylie Schumacher scored on an inbounds play and Elven scored a lay-up for a 38-27 lead. Lapwai scored 2 free throws but Elven answered with 2 at the stripe to make it 40-29. Lapwai made a 3 but a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher, 2 free throws by Kylie Schumacher and a free throw by Lexi gave Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 45-32 with 43 seconds left in the third quarter. A basket and 2 free throws by Lapwai made it 45-36 at the end of the third period. Lapwai scored a free throw and a basket to open the fourth quarter and get back within 6 but Prairie answered with a lay-up each by Elven and Lexi Schumacher where each assisted on the other’s basket. That pushed the lead back to 10 at 49-39 with 5:13 left. A pair of free throws by Lapwai were answered by a basket each by Kylie Schumacher and Sage Elben as Prairie led 53-41 with 3 minutes to play. Two free throws by Lapwai were answered by 2 from Lexi Schumacher to make it 55-43 with 1:33 left. From that point on Prairie looked to work clock on offense to the point of a shot clock violation on one possession. Lapwai was able to hit a pair of 3s in the final minute to cut the final margin down to 6. Elven scored 16 points to lead the Pirates while Lexi Schumacher scored 15 and Kylie Schumacher 14. Hanson added 8 points and Cash 2. Prairie dominated the boards 50-33 as Kylie Schumacher and Elven each had a double-double with 18 and 10 rebounds respectively. Lexi Schumacher had 4 steals and Hanson had 4 assists. Sydney Shears, Elven and Lexi Schumacher each had 3 assists. Prairie was 20 for 53 from the field, 38%, and 12 for 24 at the line, 50%. At Kendrick In the game at Kendrick a 13-0 run in the second quarter broke open a close game and Prairie went on to win big.
Prairie scored first as Hanson made 2 free throws. Kendrick tied it but Kylie Schumacher answered with a putback. After a Kendrick score, Kylie made a pair of free throws for a 6-4 lead. Kendrick tied it and Elven put Prairie back on top. Kendrick then took their first, and only, lead with a frtee throw and a 3-pointer. Kylie Schumacher tied it with a lay-up and then a steal by Hanson led to a 3-point play by Kylie for a 13-10 lead. Two free throws by Kendrick cut the lead to 1 but a putback and then a free throw by Lexi Schumacher made it 16-12. After a Kendrick basket, Elven scored in close and Cash added a free throw to make it 19-14 at the end of the first quarter. Kendrick opened the second quarter with a 3 and a near 3 to tie the score at 19 with 6:13 left in the half. Kendrick wouldn’t score again for well over 4 minutes. In the meantime Prairie racked up 13 straight points. Kylie Schumacher started it with a lay-up. She then made the first of two free throws. Elven rebounding the missed second free throw and scored. 20 seconds later Elven added another putback. A steal by Kylie Schumacher resulted in a lay-up. Another steal by Kylie resulted in a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher. A basket on a spin move in the lane by Kylie capped off the run to make it 32-19 with 2:10 left in the half. Kendrick finally scored again with 1:38 left but Prairie then scored 7 more to end the half. Elven scored a lay-up the Lexi Schumacher made a free throw. Lexi then stole the ball and scored and Elven ended the half with a putback at the buzzer for a 39-21 lead. Prairie continued their dominance in the third quarter. Kendrick opened the half with a 3-pointer but Prairie then went on a 17-2 run. Lexi Schumacher scored a putback and about 2 minutes later, Shears stole the ball underneath the Prairie basket and scored. Kendrick scored a basket then Prairie had their second 13-0 run of the game. Kylie Schumacher made 2 free throws and then a pair of lay-ups. Lexi Schumacher and Mia Anderson each scored a putback. Lexi then stole the ball and scored and Kylie ended the run with a free throw with 2 seconds left. Prairie then fouled Kendrick with 0.9 seconds left and the Tigers made both free throws to make it 56-28 at the end of the third quarter, delaying the invocation of the running clock mercy rule. 14 seconds into the fourth quarter Cash scored a lay-up to invoke the running clock. Kendrick answered with a 3 but Prairie then scored 10 unanswered. Ellie Nuxoll made a free throw. Elven scored a putback and then added a free throw a minute later. Lexi Schumacher sank a 3 then added a 2 and a free throw for a 68-31 lead with 1:20 to play. Kendrick scored a 3 with 1:06 left but Prairie ended the game with a 3 each by Aubree Rehder and Lexi Schumacher to win by 40. Kylie Schumacher scored 25 to lead the scoring with Lexi Schumacher adding 21. Elven scored 15 while Cash and Rehder scored 3 each. Shears, Hanson and Anderson scored 2 each and Nuxoll scored 1. Prairie had a 45-41 edge on the boards led by Kylie Schumacher with 14 rebounds for a double-double. Lexi Schumacher had 8 steals and 4 assists while Shears also had 8 steals. Prairie had just 11 turnovers compared to 41 by Kendrick. 31 of those turnovers were steals by Prairie with 8 different players collecting at least 1. Prairie was 28 for 78 from the field, 36%, and 15 for 25 at the line, 60%. Kendrick was 12 for 41 from the field, 29%, and 5 for 8 at the line 63%. Prairie won the 2-quarter JV game 25-16. Mia Anderson scored the first points on a bank shot. Kendrick tied it the Anderson hit a 3 to put Prairie ahead for good. Beka Schumacher scored a lay-up on an inbounds play for a 7-2 lead. Kendrick scored 2 free throws but a basket each by Alli Rambo and Schumacher made it 11-4. Kendrick converted a 3-point play then Erica Schlader scored a lay-up. After a Kendrick basket, Anderson made 2 free throws and then scored a lay-up to make it 17-9 at the end of the first period. Schumacher scored to open the second period. After a Kendrick basket, Rambo scored a lay-up and Reagan Brannan scored 2 free throws to make it 23-11. Kendrick hit a 3 and Brannan answered with a putback. Kendrick scored to make the final margin 9 points. Anderson scored 9 to lead the team. Schumacher scored 6. Brannan and Rambo scored 4 each and Schlader scored 2. Prairie dominated the boards 27-8. it 11-18.Elven opened the second quarter with a basket but Grangeville answered. Elven and Anderson each scored a basket to cut the deficit to 3 at 17-20. Grangeville pushed the lead back to 7 with a 2-6 run where Cash scored Prairie’s only basket. Prairie then scored 6 straight to pull within 1 point. Elven scored a basket and Anderson scored twice to make it 25-26. Grangeville scored but a free throw by Kylie Schumacher and a basket by Cash tied the score at 28 with 1:11 left in the half. Grangeville then scored a pair of baskets to take a 28-32 lead at the break. In the third quarter Grangeville seemed to score twice each time Prairie scored and built a 39-47 lead by the end of the quarter. They then scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to take a 39-49 lead, their biggest of the game. Elven then scored 5 straight points on a free throw, basket and 2 more free throws to cut the deficit in half and kick off a 15-2 scoring run. The scoring run was fueled by notching up the defensive intensity on the press and forcing turnovers and missed shots. Grangeville scored at the 5:08 mark then Kylie Schumacher scored a pair of baskets. A steal by Elven led to a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher to cut the lead to 1 point. Another turnover led to Elven scoring on an inbounds play to give Prairie their first lead of the game at 52-51 with 3:13 left to play. A steal by Shears led to a lay-up by Hanson to make it 54-51 with 2:32 left. The Bulldogs broke their scoring drought with 2 free throws with 2:03 left. Prairie answered with 2 free throws by Elven for a 56-53 lead. Grangeville got 2 free throws with 1:44 left. Then Grangeville’s Caryss Barger was fouled. She missed the first free throw but made the second to tie it. Somehow the scoreboard operator thought she made both and had Grangeville ahead 56-57 with 1:16 to play. The referees and scorebook got it fixed. Grangeville had to foul Prairie a couple of times before they could shoot free throws. Prairie missed 2 but Grangeville missed a shot at the other end and Prairie rebounded. Elven was fouled and made the first of 2 free throws with 7.6 seconds left to give Prairie a 1 point lead. Grangeville inbounded and called timeout. They inbounded again after getting the ball to halfcourt and called another timeout with 1.7 seconds left. Once Grangeville got set up for the inbounds play, Prairie called timeout to develop a defense against that set-up. Apparently coach Lori Mader spotted something as Lexi Schumacher was in the perfect spot to intercept Grangeville’s inbounds pass to end the game. Elven wound up with 20 points to lead all scorers. Kylie Schumacher scored 13. Lexi Schumacher scored 8. Prairie got quality minutes from bench players Anderson and Cash who had 6 and 4 points respectively. Hanson scored 4 and Shears 2. Grangeville had a 33-39 edge on the boards. Elven and Kylie Schumacher each had a double-double as Elven had 13 rebounds and Kylie Schumacher had 11. A putback by Halle Rowland and 2 free throws by Blake Uhlenkott pushed the lead back to 8. Grangeville scored at the buzzer to trail 22-16 at the half. Grangeville twice got within 3 in the third quarter but each time Prairie responded. After a Grangeville 3 to open the quarter, Schumacher scored. Another Grangeville basket cut the lead to 3 then Schumacher, Brannan and Anderson each scored a basket for a 30-21 lead. After a Grangeville 3, Halle Rowland scored twice to make it a 10-point margin. 3 Grangeville free throws against a basket by Anderson made it 36-27 at the end of 3. Grangeville scored 4 straight to pull within 5. Schumacher scored then Grangeville scored 2 free throws to again pull within 5. Rambo scored a putback but Grangeville answered to make it 40-35 with 4:00 left. Prairie then scored 6 straight to take a 46-35 lead. Schlader, Schumacher and Halle Rowland each scored to make it 46-35 with 2:46 to play. Grangeville scored the final 4 points of the game to cut the final margin to 7. Schumacher scored 12 and had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Halle Rowland scored 8, Anderson 7, Brannan and Schlader 5 each, Rambo 4, Uhlenkott 3 and Mikayla Rowland 2.
