Lady Pirates beat Lapwai, Troy
The Prairie Lady Pirates won a pair of league road games last week. On Thursday, Jan. 18, they traveled to Lapwai and pulled out a 51-43 win to earn a season split against the Wildcats. On Saturday, Jan. 20, they traveled to Troy and won 64-42.
At Lapwai
The Lady Pirates outscored Lapwai 22-10 in the fourth quarter to pull out a win and even the season series against the Wildcats.
Prairie scored just 4 points in the opening quarter, a basket each by Sage Elven and Kylie Schumacher, but held Lapwai to just 10 as they trailed 4-10 after 1 period.
In the second quarter Prairie fell behind 7-14 then outscored Lapwai 14-7 over the final 6 minutes of the half to gain a 21-21 halftime tie.
Kylie Schumacher started the rally with a free throw followed by a 3-point play to cut the deficit to 3 at 11-14. After a Lapwai baskets, Elven and Lexi Schumacher each scored a lay-up to cut the deficit to 1 at 15-16.
A 3 by Lapwai put them back on top by 4. A basket each by Elven and Kylie Schumacher tied the game at 19. Lapwai took back the lead with a basket but Sydney Shears tied it at 21 with 55 seconds left in the half.
The third quarter saw Prairie run into some turnover problems and Lapwai was able to take their biggest lead of the game at 8 points at 23-31 and again at 25-33 with 1:13 left in the quarter. Lexi Schumacher made 2 free throws and Elven scored to cut the deficit in half by the end of the quarter, 29-33.
Prairie opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Lexi Schumacher scored 2 lay-ups. Elven made the second of 2 free throws and Kylie Schumacher scored a lay-up to make it 36-33.
Lapwai tied it with a 3-pointer and then took the lead back with a 3-point play that made it 36-39 with 5:21 left.
Prairie then took over with a 9-0 run. Kylie Schumacher started it with a free throw. Elven then scored on a turn-around shot to tie it at 39. Hailey Hanson scored a midrange shot to give Prairie the lead for good with 4:02 left. Lexi Schumacher then scored twice on steals that she took the length of the court for lay-ups to make it 45-39.
Lapwai broke their 3+ minute dry spell but Prairie answered with a basket by Elven and a free throw by Kylie Schumacher. Lapwai scored a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 5 with 30 seconds left.
Hanson was then fouled and made both free throws with 25 seconds to play to make it a 3-possession game. Lexi Schumacher added a free throw to make the final margin of 8 points.
Lexi Schumacher was the leading scorer with 16 points. Elven however had a breakout game with 15 points and 20 rebounds. Kylie Schumacher scored 14 while Hanson scored 4 and Shears scored 2.
Prairie had 46-37 edge on the boards. In addition to Elven’s big night on the boards, Kylie Schumacher nearly had a double-double with 9 rebounds.
Kylie Schumacher had 5 steals and 3 assists. Elven had 3 steals and Hanson and Alli Geis each had 4 assists.
Prairie was 20 for 55 from the field, 36%, and 10 for 20 at the line, 50%. Lapwai was 16 for 56 from the field, 29%, and 6 for 15 from the line, 40%.
Prairie had 10 turnovers in the aforementioned third quarter but just 12 total in the other 3 quarters.
In the JV game Prairie jumped out to a 25-0 lead by the 3 minute mark of the second quarter and went on to win 37-19.
Prairie outscored Lapwai 19-0 in the first quarter as Aubree Rehder scored 7 points, Nadia Cash 6, Erica Schlader 4 and Halee Rowland 2.
Schlader scored the first 5 points of the second quarter and a 2 and then a 3-point basket. Avery Riener scored a free throw to make it 25-0 with 3:49 left in the half.
Lapwai then regrouped and scored the final 6 points of the half to make it 25-6 at the break.
Lapwai scored the first 5 points of the third quarter before Rowland broke the dry spell with 2 free throws.
After a Lapwai free throw, Rehder scored following a steal by Ellie Nuxoll. After a Lapwai baskets, Prairie scored 4 straight points at the free throw line on 8 attempts. Nuxoll was 2 for 4 while Rehder and Schlader each hit 1 of 2.
Lapwai then scored to make it 33-16 at the end of the third quarter.
Prairie was able to outscore Lapwai 5-3 in the fourth quarter with Maggie Nuxoll scoring a basket and Rowland and Schlader each adding a free throw.
Schlader had a double-double to lead the Pirates as she had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Rehder scored 10 while Cash scored 6, Rowland 5, Ellie and Maggie Nuxoll 2 each and Riener 1.
Prairie had a 50-35 advantage on the boards. Rowland had 8 boards while Cash and Ellie Nuxoll each had 7.
Schlader nearly made it a triple double with 9 steals. Rehder and Ellie Nuxoll each had 5 steals.
Prairie was 13 for 57 from the field, 23%, and 9 for 24 at the line, 38%. Lapwai was 7 for 37 from the field, 19%, and 4 for 12 at the line, 33%.

At Troy Sage Elven goes for a lay-up at Troy. She has stepped her game up a few notches lately helping Prairie to a big win at Lapwai as well as at Troy.
At Troy Prairie got off to a strong start. Lexi Schumacher scored Prairie’s first 6 points as they took a 6-2 lead. After a Troy free throw made it 6-3, Elven scored 8 of the next 9 points as Prairie pushed the lead to 15-3. Steals led directly to 8 of those 15 points.
Troy’d Dericka Morgan then scored the next 7 points to get Troy back into the game at 15-10.
A steal by Elven led to a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher but Troy answered with 2 free throws. Elven and Shears then each scored a lay-up to give Prairie a 21-12 lead at the end of the quarter.
Lexi Schumacher opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-pointer but Troy countered with a 4-9 run to get back within 7 at 28-21. Shears and Elven each had a basket for Prairie in that run.
Prairie then answered with a 7-0 run. Elven scored a lay-up, Hanson hit a 3 and Elven hit a bank shot on an inbounds feed from Hanson to make it 35-21. Troy added a basket and Hanson closed out the half with a basket to make it 37-23 at the break.
Lexi Schumacher opened the third quarter with a 3-point play but Morgan answered with 3 straight points. After a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher, Morgan hit a 3. Lexi Schumacher answered with a 3 of her own. Troy closed the quarter with a 4-9 run to pull within 11 at 49-38. Elven had Prairie’s 4 points in that stretch.
Troy managed to cut the lead down to 7 with 4:38 to play at 53-46. Kylie Schumacher then got hot and scored 6 straight points and Elven added a putback to push the lead back to 15 at 61-46 with 1:47 to play.
Troy scored 6 straight to get back within single digits at 61-52 but their were just 55 seconds left to play. Lexi Schumacher made a free throw and Hanson added 2 more to make the final margin of 12 points.
Elven, in here second straight outstanding game, nearly had a triple double with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 9 steals. Lexi Schumacher added 20 points while Kylie Schumacher scored 11. Hanson added 7 and Shears 4.
Rebounding was even at 40 each. Shears almost hit double figures with 9 boards.
Lexi Schumacher added 5 steals and Shears had 5 assists.
Prairie was 28 for 66 from the field, 42%, and 5 for 16 at the line, 31%. Troy was 20 for 51 from the field, 39%, and 10 for 19 at the line, 53%.
Prairie is now 12-6 overall and 8-2 in league play.
There was no JV game.
