To the Library and Beyond CORRECTION: The Board of Directors of Prairie Community Library, Inc. will hold their annual meeting on Thursday 20 February at 10:30 AM in the Library, and everyone is invited; we will be electing directors and officers for 2025. Then, on Saturday, come in and visit with Joan and Frances between 10 AM and 3 PM. Frances has written about a donated acquisition that she expects to be on the New Arrival shelves this week: ‘’We’ve recently added a new title to our Northwest section that may be of interest to any history buffs out there. Thunder in the Mountains: Chief Joseph, Oliver Otis Howard & the Nez Perce War, was published in 2017. The author, Daniel J. Sharfstein, a professor of history and law at Vanderbilt University, spent time in the region in 2013 traveling in Chief Joseph’s footsteps, researching the archives at the Spalding Nez Perce National Historical Park and conducting interviews elsewhere. The author returned to Idaho in July 2017 for the book’s release giving a lecture at the Spalding visitor center that was attended by an overflow audience. Quoting from the book’s jacket cover, ‘Re-creating the Nez Perce War through the words of its survivors, Daniel J. Sharfstein’s visionary history of the West casts Howard’s turn away from civil rights alongside the nation’s rejection of racial equality and embrace of empire. The war that Howard and Joseph fought is one that Americans continue to fight today.’ Come check it out and then let us know what you think of the book.” February is National Library Lovers' Month, and Library volunteers need to know what books you want to read. Have you seen the section of large-print books in our Library? February 1-8 is Children’s Authors And Illustrators Week. Take Your Child To The Library Day is Saturday, February 1. We may observe Groundhog Day or Candlemas Day on Sunday 2. Wednesday 5 is World Read Aloud Day. In 2021 Prairie Community Library served 2,075 patrons; during the nine months we were open in 2023, we loaned 2,171 items. The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library gather information in the form of statistics that we use to determine how best to serve the residents of the surrounding communities. "Goodness is the only investment that never fails." Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. “Volunteering helps us feel happier and helps increase our social skills.” Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.
