Lady Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates finished their regular season with a pair of league road wins to finish 2nd in the league. On Tuesday, Jan. 23, they gained a season split with Kamiah with a 43-36 win. On Friday, Jan. 26, they traveled to Potlatch and closed out their regular season with a 66-18 win.
They were to play C.V. in their District opener on Tuesday, Jan. 30. With a win they would likely play Kamiah at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at Lewiston High School.
They take an 8-game winning streak into the District Tournament.
At Kamiah
The game at Kamiah was a defensive-minded battle with the league’s #2 seed into District going to the winner. Sage Elven scores 2 of her game-high 22 points at Kamiah.
Prairie’s Kylie Schumacher and Kamiah’s Emma Krogh pretty much cancelled each other out in the game as neither was able to score much. Also, Prairie’s Lexi Schumacher’s shooting eye was off in the game as she went scoreless through the first 3 quarters.
Stepping up big for the Pirates though was Sage Elven who led all scorers with 22 points.
Hailey Hanson got things started by hitting a 3-pointer for the game’s first points. Kamiah answered with a basket then Elven took over. She scored the next 4 points on a pair of turn-around bank shots to make it 7-2. After a Kamiah basket, Elven scored inside again to make it 9-4 after 1 quarter.
After a Kamiah free throw, Prairie scored 7 straight. Elven scored a pair of lay-ups and Hanson concerted a 3-point play for a 16-5 lead. After a Kamiah baskets, Elven and Alli Geis each scored to put Prairie up 20-7 with 2:50 left in the half.
Things then went sideway for Prairie as they started turning the ball over and fouling on made shots. Kamiah converted back to back 3-point plays then added a 3-pointer. A drive for a lay-up in the final seconds cut Prairie’s 13-point lead down to just 2 at the half, 20-18.
Kamiah scored the first 2 points of the second half to tie the score and the Kubs had a chance to take the lead with a free throw but missed.
A basket by Elven and a 3 by Hanson put Prairie back up by 5. Kamiah answered with a pair of baskets by Laney Landmark to pull within 1. Prairie then closed the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 31-24 lead into the fourth. Elven scored all 6 points.
Lexi Schumacher finally got on the scoreboard to open the fourth quarter as she made a 3-pointer. Elven added a free throw to put Prairie up 35-24. A Kamiah 3-pointer was answered with a basket by Sydney Shears.
A basket by Kamiah was answered with a free throw by Kylie Schumacher, her only point of the game. Kamiah whittled another point off the lead when a basket was answered by a free throw by Elven.
Kamiah then got within 4 on a basket each by Landmark and Krogh. Lexi Schumacher made the second of 2 free throws and Kamiah answered with a free throw to make it 40-36 with 30 seconds to play.
Prairie then scored the final 3 points to hold on for the win. Lexi Schumacher made 2 free throws with 22 seconds left and Shears made the second of 2 free throws with 9 seconds left.
Elven had a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Hanson scored 9 points while Lexi Schumacher scored 6, Shears 3, Geis 2 and Kylie Schumacher 1.
Prairie had a 43-31 advantage on the boards with Kylie Schumacher also having 15 rebounds.
Elven had 4 steals and Kylie and Lexi Schumacher each had 5 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 47 from the field, 34%, and 8 for 15 at the line, 53%. Kamiah was 15 for 52 from the field, 29%, and 4 for 10 at the line, 40%.
The Prairie JV team closed out their season with a 51-17 win over the Kubs.
Ellie Nuxoll got the scoring started with a lay-up and Avery Riener followed with a 3-pointer to make it 5-0.
Kamiah came back to cut the lead to 8-6 then Prairie closed out the first quarter with a 10-0 run. Nuxoll scored 6 of those points and Nadia Cash scored the other 4 as Prairie led 18-6 at the end of the quarter.
The two teams traded baskets through the second quarter with Nuxoll adding 6 more points while Halee Rowland and Maggie Nuxoll each scored 2 as Prairie took a 28-14 lead at the half.
Prairie dominated the third quarter as they outscored Kamiah 20-0 to take a 48-14 lead and invoke the running clock for the entire fourth quarter.
Rowland hit 4 of 5 shots for 8 points in the third quarter while Aubree Rehder sank a pair of 3’s and Erica Schlader hit 3 of 4 shots for 6 points each.
Kennedy Riener had Prairie’s only fourth quarter points on a 3-pointer while Kamiah made a basket and a free throw.
Kamiah broke a scoring drought of nearly 12 minutes when they scored their basket in the fourth quarter.
Ellie Nuxoll wound up with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, all in the first half, to lead the team in both categories. Rowland scored 10, Rehder 8, Schlader 6, Cash 3, Avery and Kennedy Riener 3 each and Maggie Nuxoll 2.
Prairie had a 40-31 rebounding edge.
Cash had 5 steals and 4 assists while Rowland had 3 steals and 4 assists.
The JVs were 21 for 62 from the field, 34%, and 3 for 10 at the line, 30%. Kamiah was 6 for 30 from the field, 20%, and 4 for 11 at the line, 36%.

At Potlatch
The game at Potlatch was lopsided as Prairie easily won.

Potlatch scored a basket then Prairie scored the next 8 points to take a 15-2 lead. Kylie Schumacher scored 2 baskets while Elven added a lay-up and Hanson made 2 free throws.
Potlatch scored 4 for the next 6 points with Elven scoring a basket for Prairie. Prairie then closed out the quarter with 5 straight. Elven made a free throw and Kylie and Lexi Schumacher each scored a basket to make it 22-6.
Potlatch hit a 3 to open the second quarter then Prairie scored 16 straight points. Lexi Schumacher made a basket and 2 free throws, Elven and Kylie Schumacher each scored a putback, Ellie Nuxoll scored a putback, Lexi Schumacher scored a lay-up and Kylie Schumacher scored a pair of lay-ups to make it 38-9.
Potlatch then closed out the half with 6 straight points to make it 38-15 at the break.
Prairie outscored Potlatch 13-1 in the third quarter. Elven opened the quarter with a reverse lay-up. Kylie Schumacher then putback her own missed shot to make it 42-18.
Potlatch scored a free throw then Kylie Schumacher scored on an inbounds play to kick off a 22-0 run that carried into the fourth quarter.
Prairie scored the final 9 points of the third quarter to take a 51-16 lead into the fourth. They then scored the first 13 of the fourth quarter.
Potlatch’s only points in the fourth quarter came with 39 seconds left. It was Potlatch’s senior night and Potlatch’s boys players were chanting for Bailyn Anderson, a senior who had a leg injury, to get into the game. Their coach finally put her in and Prairie coach Lori Mader walked over and told them to inbound her the ball and they would let her shoot uncontested. Anderson scored the basket to join Potlatch’s other two seniors in getting into the scoring column on their senior night.
Prairie then scored the game’s final basket to make it 66-18.
Lexi and Kylie Schumacher each scored 22 points to lead Prairie in scoring. Elven scored 13 with Shears scoring 3 and Hanson, Geis and Nuxoll 2 each.
Prairie had a 40-28 edge on the boards. Kylie Schumacher had a double-double with 11 rebounds to lead the team. Elven and Lexi Schumacher each added 8 rebounds.
Hanson had 8 steals and 7 assists while Elven had 6 steals and 6 assists.
Prairie was 29 for 65 from the field, 45%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%. Potlatch was 7 for 38 from the field, 18%, and 3 for 4 at the line, 75%.
Prairie ends their regular season with a record of 14-6, 10-2 in league play.
