Joan’s book review this week, for those folks interested in Alaska, is titled “Denali’s Howl”. This is the account of a 1967 mountaineering expedition on Denali (Mt. McKinley) near Fairbanks, Alaska, in which 7 of 12 mountaineers were lost (killed) near the mountain’s summit. The 12-man team was organized by 24-year-old Joe Wilcox, and the oldest team member was age 31. They conducted the ascent during the summer of 1967, and the book details their route across glaciers and ridges while avoiding many crevasses. The author describes the expedition’s camping and also the gear they took, as well as the experience of each team member. During the expedition, a large storm hit Denali, with white-out conditions and extreme cold temperatures. Several team members had attained the summit, but the 7 members who were lost were attempting to come down the mountain during the storm and were killed during the extreme conditions. This is a fascinating book for people who enjoy reading about Alaska and the area of Denali. Last Thursday’s ukulele session was another good one! We’re delighted to welcome town folks and others from the area, including Grangeville, Ferdinand, and Craigmont. The group welcomes beginners as well as more advanced players. Everyone will have a good time playing, as well as socializing with the other players. Come join us at the library every Thursday from 4-530 pm to enjoy this group! | COTTONWOOD
