2 wrestlers compete at North/South Duals
The Prairie Wrestling team competed in 3 events this past week.
On Wednesday, Jan. 28, Prairie hosted a meet for the first time in many years. On Saturday, Jan. 31, they traveled to Caldwell for the Caldwell JV Boys Tournament and the Caldwell Girls Tournament.
Prairie Invite
Zach Schumacher, Ashton Martin, Carson Lockart and Raymond Cross competed at the Prairie Invite. There were no matches available for Mikayla Rowland and Avery Schacher.
At 132 lbs. Schumacher lost by pin in 1:02 to Tyeray Gumfory of Lapwai in Round 1. In Round 2 he lost by pin in 1:25 to Kaden Schaff of Kamiah. In Round 3 he stepped up to the 138 lbs. weight class and lost by pin in 41 seconds to Hunter Granger of Grangeville.
Martin only wrestled once at 157 lbs. He won by decision in overtime, 18-15 over Avry Orford of Grangeville.
At 175 lbs. Lockart won by pin in 2:00 over Colt Greene of Lapwai in Round 1. In Round 2 he lost by pin in 1:06 to Orrin Farmer of Grangeville. In Round 3 he lost by pin in 1:03 to Gatlin Griffith of Kamiah.
AT 215 lbs., Cross lost by pin to Abel Enick of Lapwai in 3:15. In Round 2, he wrestled at 285 and lost by technical fall, 2-17 in 2:08, to Dante Davis of Lapwai.
Caldwell Girls Tournament
Avery Schacher won 3 matches to win first place in the 170 lbs. weight class and improve her season record to 24-0. After receiving a pair of byes she faced Dakota Burgess of Payette. She scored a takedown then a pin at the 1:30 mark in the first period. In her second match she faced Lyla Arce of Parma. She scored a takedown and nearfall in the first period for a 6-0 lead. In the second period she started in the bottom position. She scored a reversal 9 seconds in and then won by pin 6 seconds later at the 2:15 mark of the match. In the championship match, she faced Carmela Rodriguez of Ontario. In one of her toughest matches of the season, she took a 9-2 lead after 1 period.  She took an 11-2 lead in the second then got called for a penalty that seemed to swing the momentum. Rodriguez scored a takedown and near fall to cut the lead to 11-10. At the 3:33 mark, Schacher scored a reversal and 17 seconds later scored a pin to win the match and first place.
In the 145 lbs. bracket Rowland received a bye then lost by pin in 49 seconds to Gemma Lebeau of Eagle. After a bye in the consolation bracket she faced Gracie Howard of Meadows Valley. She was trailing 2-3 when Howard had to forfeit due to injury. In the consolation semifinals, Rowland faced Ruby Rayhill of Boise. 1:38 into the match, Rowland suffered an injury and had to forfeit the match.
As a team, Prairie tied for 12th out of 27 teams with 29 points.
Caldwell JV Boys Tournament
Schumacher, Martin and Lockart competed at the Caldwell JV Boys Tournament.
At 132 lbs., Schumacher lost by pin in the first round to Caden Blackburn of Union, Ore. in 1:12. He then lost by pin in 1:09 to Taven Cacho of Four Rivers, Ore.
At 157 lbs. Martin opened against Eliseo Perez of Weiser. He won a 17-5 decision. He led 6-3 after the first period after a reversal and near fall. He led 14-5 after the second period. He scored a takedown in the third period and held on for the win. In the quarterfinals he lost by pin in 1:08 to Tavon Bird of Eagle. In the consolation bracket he lost by pin in 2:42 to A.J. Pierce of Parma.
At 175 lbs. Lockart opened with a loss by pin to Micah McGann of Emmett in 4:32. Lockart was able to score a couple of takedowns but trailed 6-14 when he was pinned. After a bye in the consolation bracket, he faced Blake Glemser of Tri-Valley. He trailed 2-3 after the first period. They started neutral in the second period where Lockart scored a takedown and then won by pin at the 1:49 mark. He then lost by pin in 47 seconds to Caleb Shaw of Union, Ore.
As a team Prairie placed 25th out of 30 teams with 11 points.
