Lady Pirates win league title
The Prairie Lady Pirates suffered their first league loss when they lost at Lapwai 46-50 on Wednesday, Jan. 29. They came back the next night though and beat Kamiah 62-45 on Senior Night Thursday, Jan. 30, to clinch their first outright league championship since 2018.
They had shared the title with Lapwai in both 2022 and 2019 but 2018 was the last time they had won the league outright. They will take the #1 seed into the District Tournament which starts Wednesday, Feb. 5, with a home game against #8 seed Logos at 6 p.m.
At Lapwai
Prairie started well as they scored first with a free throw by Hailey Hanson. Lapwai took their first lead with a basket. Prairie took back the lead on a turn-around shot by Sage Elven. Lexi Schumacher added 2 Sage Elven puts up a shot at Lapwai. She had a team high 18 points in the game.free throws to make it 5-2.
Lapwai then scored 7 straight to retake the lead. Prairie answered with a free throw by Lexi Schumacher and 2 by Sydney Shears to cut the lead to 1 at 8-9. Lapwai ended the first quarter scoring with 2 free throws and an 8-11 lead.
They made it 8-13 to start the second after a Prairie turnover. Elven then hit back-to-back baskets to make it 12-13. After a Lapwai basket, Shears drove to the hoop for a basket and then gave Prairie the lead when she made a 3 with 2:55 left in the half. That turned out to be Prairie’s final lead of the game. Lapwai tied it and then went ahead on 3 straight baskets. A putback by Kylie Schumacher made it 19-21 at the half.
In the third quarter Lapwai’s Skylin Picard, who had missed their loss to Kamiah a week earlier, got hot. She scored 15 of Lapwai’s 19 points in the quarter and was 6 for 8 shooting the ball including 3 for 5 from 3-point range.
Elven kept Prairie close earlyin the quarter with 6 points and a 3-point play by Kylie Schumacher tied it at 28 with 4:42 left in the quarter. Picard then hit back to back 3’s to ignite a 3-12 Lapwai run to finish the quarter.
Lapwai took a 31-40 lead into the fourth. Lapwai twice led by 11 in the fourth quarter, at 33-44 and again at 38-49 after Picard’s fourth 3 of the half with 1:58 to play.
Prairie then tried to rally back as they outscored Lapwai 8-1 from that point on but ran out of time. Hanson started the late rally with 2 free throws. Lexi Schumacher, who had struggled with her shot throughout the game, made her only basket after a steal by Shears. Elven scored a putback with 40 seconds left to make it 44-49. Lapwai made a free throw with 14 seconds left and Hanson made 2 free throws with 3 seconds left to cut the final margin to 4.
Elven scored 18 points and had 15 rebounds to lead the Pirates in both categories. Kylie Schumacher had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Shears had 8 points, 6 steals and 3 assist. Hanson had 7 points and Lexi Schumacher had 5.
Prairie had a 40-36 edge on the boards.
The Pirates were 16 for 49 from the field, 33%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%. Lapwai was 20 for 60 from the field, 33%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%.
Prairie won the JV 63-22 thanks to a huge first half by Zoey Behler.
Prairie took leads of 6-0 and 16-2 in the first quarter. Behler got things started with a lay-up. Erica Schlader scored after a steal and Beka Schumacher scored on an inbounds play for a 6-0 lead. After 2 Lapwai free throws, Prairie scored 10 straight. Schumacher scored a midrange shot then stole the ball and passed to Schlader for another lay-up. Mia Anderson scored 2 lay-ups and Behler scored a putback.
Lapwai scored their first basket at the 3:58 mark. Reagan Brannan followed with a basket. After a free throw and a basket by Lapwai, Anderson scored again. A Lapwai basket made it 20-9 then Prairie scored the final 8 points of the opening quarter. Brannan scored a lay-up. Anderson stole the ball and scored. Anderson stole the ball and scored. Behler made 2 free throws and Schumacher banked in a free throw to make it 28-9.
Schumacher started the second quarter with a free throw then Behler scored on an inbounds play. Schumacher scored a lay-up and Behler made a free throw to complete a 14-0 run for a 34-9 lead.
After a Lapwai basket, Behler was fouled on a 3-point shot and made all 3 free throws. 14 seconds later Behler made another free throw. After a Lapwai basket, Behler made back-to-back 3’s  and added 2 more free throws to give Prairie a 46-13 halftime lead. Behler had scored 15 of Prairie’s 18 second quarter points and 21 total in the first half.
Schumacher scored a free throw and then a lay-up on an inbounds play to start the second half. Anderson hit a 3 to make it 52-13. Schumacher and Brannan each added a basket in the fourth quarter and Mikayla Rowland made 2 free throws as Prairie took a 59-17 lead into the fourth quarter.
With a running clock in the fourth, Prairie was outscored 4-5. Faith Cash opened the quarter with a 3 and Alli Rambo closed the game with a free throw. In between Lapwai scored 5 points,
Behler wound up with 21 points to lead the team. After her big first half she attempted just 1 shot in the second half. Schumacher scored 13. Anderson scored 12 with Brannan scoring 7. Schlader scored 4, Cash 3, Rowland 2 and Rambo 1.
Rebounding was even at 31-31. Schumacher led Prairie with 9 rebounds.
Schlader had 5 steals while Rowland, Anderson, Schumacher and Brannan each had 4. Schumacher had 3 assists while Behler, Rowland, Blake Uhlenkott and Anderson each had 2.
The JV’s were 21 for 54 from the field, 39%, and 16 for 26 at the line, 62%. Lapwai was 8 for 27 from the field, 30%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%.

Vs. Kamiah
Prairie bounced back from a tough loss the night before and won on Senior Night over the Kubs.
Prior to the game Lexi Schumacher, Ellie Nuxoll, Aubree Rehder and Kadence Kalmbach, the 4 seniors on the team, were honored with their families.
The 4 seniors all started the game along with Kylie Schumacher.
Prairie took a 16-8 by the end of the first quarter and extended it to 31-17 by halftime.
It was 48-27 after 3 quarters. Kamiah outscored Prairie 14-18 in the final quarter to cut the final margin to 17 points.
Kylie Schumacher led the Pirates with 19 points, 11 steals and eight rebounds. Sage Elven provided another 16 points plus five assists, while Lexi Schumacher scored 12.
Prairie finished the regular season at 17-2 overall and 13-1 in league play.
The JV team had little trouble with the Clarkston Freshmen as they won 46-11.
