Patriots boys lose to Salmon River
The St. John Bosco Patriots started strong but eventually lost 54-59 to Salmon River at Cottonwood Tuesday, Jan. 28. Cody Weckman puts up a shot against Salmon River.
The Patriots jumped out to an 8-0 lead against the Savages. Henry Baldwin started the scoring with a basket. Cody Weckman scored following a steal by Connor Nuxoll. Nathan Wassmuth hit a midrange jumper and Weckman drove to the hoop for a lay-up to make it 8-0.
Salmon River’s Blake Shepherd got the Savages on the board with a 3-pointer, something that would happen several more times. A lay-up made it 8-5. Bosco then got a basket by Baldwin, a free throw by Tommy Rose and a basket by Weckman to make it 13-5. Another 3 by Shepherd to close out the quarter made it 13-8.
A Weckman steal led to a 3-pointer and a 16-6 lead. Salmon River then rallied to tie it on 2 more 3’s plus a lay-up. 2 free throws by Wyatt Crea put Bosco back on top. Salmon River tied it with 2 free throws and Wassmuth answered with 2 free throws for a 20-18 lead with 3:28 left in the half.
Salmon River then scored 6 straight points for their first lead of the game. Wassmuth scored 2 more free throws to cut the deficit to 2. Salmon River answered with a free throw. Wassmuth scored a lay-up to cut the deficit to 1 but Salmon River added a lay-up at the buzzer to lead 24-27 at the half.
Bosco never was able to regain the lead. Salmon River opened the second half with a 3. A basket each by Wassmuth and Weckman cut the lead to 2 but 3 free throws by Salmon River pushed the lead back to 5. A free throw by Nuxoll and a lay-up by Weckman again pulled the Patriots within 2 at 31-33.
5 straight by Salmon River pushed the lead to 7. Weckman scored on a drive but Salmon River answered to take a 33-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
A steal by Ignatius Parmentier led to a basket by Crea to open the fourth quarter. Salmon River then scored a basket and a free throw to lead by 8 again.
A steal by Weckman led to a lay-up by Crea. 30 seconds later, Crea hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 3. Salmon River scored but Bosco answered with a putback by Baldwin and 2 free throws by Wassmuth to pull within 1 at 44-45.
After a Salmon River basket, Weckman scored to again cut the deficit to 1 point at 46-47 with 3:41 to play.
Salmon River answerd with 2 free throws and a basket to lead by 6. Wassmuth made a basket with 1:46 left to cut the lead to 4 but Salmon River answered. A free throw by Weckman and 2 by Nuxoll but the deficit to 3. Salmon River scored and Weckman answered with a 3 to pull the Patriots within 2 with 28 seconds left. Unfortunately that was the final points for Bosco as Saland River added 3 free throws for a 5-point win.
Weckman scored 21 to lead the Patriots. Wassmuth added 14 with Crea scoring 9, Baldwin 6, Nuxoll 3 and Rose 1.
Bosco had a 37-32 edge on the boards led by Wassmuth and Nuxoll with 9 each.
Nuxoll and Weckman each had 4 steals and Weckman had 5 assists.
Bosco was 19 for 52 from the field, 37%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%. Salmon River was 21 for 46 from the field, 46%, and 12 for 23 at the line, 52%.
Shepherd wound up with five 3-pointers and 23 points to lead the Savages.
Bosco is now 3-13 overall and 3-9 in league play.
