Patriots teams lose 3 games
The St. John Bosco girls basketball team ended their regular season with a 19-78 loss at Kendrick on Tuesday, Jan. 30. On Monday, Feb. 5, they opened District Tournament play with a 14-46 loss to Deary at Lapwai. They will play Nezperce next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7.
Meanwhile the boys team ended their league season with a 33-76 loss at Kendrick on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
Girls at Kendrick
In the girls game at Kendrick, the Lady Tigers seemed to have every shot they took go through the hoop. In fact they did make their first 6 shots for a 0-15 lead with 3 of those coming from 3-point range.
Bosco broke the run when Julia Wassmuth mad a basket, Kendrick then scored another 14 straight points before Wassmuth made a free throw. Kendrick scored again to take a 3-31 lead into the second quarter.
Kendrick then scored the first 13 points of the second quarter before Wassmuth made another free throw. Kendrick then scored 6 more to take a 4-50 lead at the half.
Bosco scored 5 of the first 7 points in the third quarter when Sarah Waters made a lay-up and then hit a 3-pointer to make it 9-52.
Kendrick then scored 22 straight points before Wassmuth made a free throw to make it 10-74 at the end of the third quarter.
Bosco had their best scoring quarter in the fourth despite the running clock as they almost doubled their score. Wassmuth added 4 more points while Waters and Savannah Perrin each scored a baskets and Noelle Chmelik added a free throw. They outscored Kendrick 9-4 in the final period.
Wassmuth scored 9 to lead the Patriots in scoring. Waters added 7 with Perrin scoring 2 and Chmelik 1.
Kendrick had a 27-40 rebounding edge. Wassmuth and Waters each had 6 to lead the Patriots.
Waters had 2 steals and Perrin had 2 assists.
Bosco was 7 for 31 from the field, 23%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%. Kendrick was 31 for 66 from the field, 47%, and 6 for 6 at the line.
The Lady Patriots finished their regular season with a record of 8-7 overall, 3-5 in league play.

Boys at Kendrick
The boys team didn’t fare much better than the girls team at Kendrick.
Kendrick opened the game with 20 straight points before Conner Nuxoll put the Patriots on the board with a basket. After a Kendrick 3, Levi Wassmuth scored a putback. After a Kendrick free throw, Stallone Hoene hit a bank shot. Kendrick made 2 free throws then Levi Wassmuth made 3 of 4 attempts to make it 9-26. Kendrick added a 3 to make it 9-29 at the end of the first quarter.
Kendrick outscored the Patriots 5-18 in the second quarter to take a 14-47 halftime lead. Levi Wassmuth made 2 free throws while Nathan Wassmuth scored a putback and Cody Weckman made 1 of 2 free throws for the Patriots’ points in the quarter.
Kendrick kept up the onslaught in the third quarter hitting 10 of 14 shots while the Patriots got 2 baskets each from Noah Beckman and Nathan Wassmuth and a free throw each from Tommy Rose, Cody Weckman and Levi Wassmuth.
Kendrick led 25-67 after 3 quarters.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Levi Wassmuth added 2 free throws and the Patriots only 3 pointer of the game. Rose scored a baskets and Hoene made a free throw.
Levi Wassmuth wound up as the Patriots leading scorer with 13 points. Younger brother Nathan Wassmuth scored 6 with Beckman scoring 4, Rose and Hoene 3 each, and Nuxoll and Cody Weckman 2 each.
Kendrick dominated the boards 22-40. Levi Wassmuth had 9 to lead the Patriots.
Sam Weckman had 3 steals and Cody Weckman had 3 assists.
The Patriots were 10 for 42 from the field, 24%, and 12 for 20 at the line, 60%. Kendrick was 34 for 63 from the field, 54%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%.
The Patriots are now 4-13 on the season and finish league play with a 1-9 record.
They are looking at scheduling a couple more games with the Clarkston JV or C teams but no dates have been set yet.

Girls vs. Deary at District
The Lady Patriots couldn’t get any offense going against Deary in their District Tournament opener Monday, Feb. 5
They went 0 for 5 from the field in the first quarter as Deary took a 0-9 lead into the second quarter. The Mustangs extended the lead to 18-0 before Chmelik finally put Bosco into the scoring column with a short shot in the lane on an inbounds play.
Chmelik added 2 more baskets in the quarter as Deary took a 6-22 lead at the half.
Deary went up 6-26 in the third quarter before Julia Wassmuth scored on a feed from Chmelik.
Deary then scored 9 straight points before  Chmelik scored again. Deary led 10-37 headed into the fourth quarter.
Vivian Dahlsrud scored to open the fourth quarter however Deary scored a basket and a 3 to go up 30 and invoke the running clock. Bosco didn’t score again until Chmelik scored on a lay-up with 2:10 to play. That turned out to be the final points of the game.
Chmelik wound up with 10 of St. John Bosco’s 14 points in the game. Dahlsrud and Wassmuth scored 2 each.
Deary was led by Kenadie Kirk, who scored 19 points.
Bosco competed well on the boards, outrebounding the Mustangs 37-30. Perrin and Rachel Sonnen each had 7 rebounds to lead the Patriots while Dahlsrud and Chmelik had 6 each.
Wassmuth had 6 steals and 2 assists.
Bosco was 7 for 32 from the field, 22%, and 0 for 3 at the line. Deary was 18 for 57 from the field, 32%, and 7 for 9 at the line, 78%.
The Patriots will play Nezperce in a loser out game Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at Lapwai High School. The winner will play the Kendrick-Deary loser on Friday at 6 p.m. for second place and a berth in the state tournament.
St. John Bosco is now 8-8 on the season.
