The Prairie Pirates moved into a tie for first place in the league with a pair of league wins this past week. Their one loss was a non-league game. On Tuesday, Feb. 3, they traveled to Lapwai where they won 60-41. On Thursday, Feb. 5, they lost 36-62 to Lakeside at Cottonwood. Finally on Friday, Feb. 6, they traveled to Kendrick where they knocked off the league leading Tigers 53-49. The win at Kendrick moved the Pirates into a first place tie with the Tigers with Prairie holding the tie-breaker advantage. At Lapwai Lapwai scored first then
the Pirates scored 6 straight to take the lead for good. Patrick
Schlader tied it and Riley Shears put Prairie ahead with 2 free throws.
A putback by Schlader made
it 6-2. Lapwai converted a 3-point play but Nate Forsmann answered with
a lay-up. After a Lapwai basket, Shears hit a 3 and Forsmann scored a
lay-up for a 13-7 lead. A Lapwai basket was answered with 2 free throws
by Shears. Lapwai then scored again to make it 15-11 at the end of the
first quarter.A Lapwai free throw cut the lead to 3 to open the second quarter. Schlader and Phil Schwartz each drove for a lay-up to make it 19-12. After another Lapwai free throw, Forsmann connected for 3 to make it 22-13. After a Lapwai basket, Forsmann scored a lay-up and Shears hit a 3 for a 27-15 lead. Lapwai scored again then Prairie closed out the half with 7 straight points as Schwartz hit a 3 and Schlader scored two lay-ups for a 34-17 halftime lead. Lapwai opened the second half with a 2-9 run to cut their deficit to 10 at 36-26. Schlader scored Prairie’s basket. Chase VonBargen then hit a 3. Lapwai answered with a lay-up but Schlader scored 2 free throws and Shears drove for a lay-up to push the lead back to 15 at 43-28. After a 3 by Lapwai, Prairie responded with 2 lay-ups by Schlader and a short jumper by Shears to make it 49-31. Lapwai scored a basket and a free throw to make it 49-34 after 3 quarters. Lapwai opened the fourth with a 3 then Prairie scored 9 straight points. Forsmann made 2 free throws and a lay-up while Schlader scored a 2-point and then a 3-point back to make it 58-37 with 2:09 to play. Lapwai answered with 4 straight but still trailed by 17. Schlader then scored a putback for the game’s final points. Schlader had a huge double-double to lead the Pirates as he scored 25 points and had 17 rebounds. Shears and Forsmann also scored in double figures with 14 and 13 respectively. Schwartz scored 5 and VonBargen 3. Prairie dominated the boards 39-18. Levi Gehring had 2 steals and Schlader and Forsmann each had 3 assists. Prairie was 23 for 45 from the field, 51%, and 8 for 8 at the line, 100%. Lapwai was 15 for 47 from the field, 32%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. In the JV game the Pirates got blitzed 32-97. The only thing keeping Lapwai from scoring well over 100 was the running clock in the fourth quarter. Prairie fell behind 3-23 at the start with a 3 by Sam Rehder being Prairie only points in that run. They trailed 7-28 at the end of the first quarter with Phineas Fitch and Austin Labrum scoring a basket each. The onslaught continued in the second quarter as Lapwai built their lead to 18-56 by halftime. Rehder scored 8 of Prairie’s 11 points on two 3’s and a 2 while Isaiah Warren added a 3-pointer. Lapwai outscored them 8-22 in the third quarter as they took a 26-78 lead into the fourth. Anthony Forsmann scored a basket and a free throw while Rehder hit 3 of 4 at the line and Warren scored a basket. Lapwai outscored Prairie 6-19 in the running clock 4th. Warren had a 3 and 2 free throws in the period while Forsmann scored a free throw. Rehder led the JV’s in scoring with 14 points while Warren scored 10. Forsmann scored 4 and Labrum and Fitch added 2 each. Lapwai had a 26-31 edge on the boards. Forsmann and Labrum each had 7 to lead the Pirates. Forsmann had 3 steals and Rehder had 2 assists. Prairie was 10 for 40 from the field, 25%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%. Lapwai was 38 for 58 from the field, 66%, and 8 for 9 at the line, 89%. Cooper Riener did not play due to an injury. Lapwai also won the C game 32-50. The Pirates trailed 3-13 after 1 quarter and 3-20 early in the 2nd. They outscored Lapwai 14-4 the rest of the half to cut the lead to 17-24. Lapwai outscored them 3-11 in the third and 12-15 in the fourth. Stetson Hankins led the C team in scoring with 15 points while Ray Terhaar scored 4. Matthew Jones, Warren and Fitch each scored 3 while Gabe Severns and Forsmann each scored 2. of Plummer was relatively close until the 4 minute mark of the third
quarter. Then Lakeside ran away and won by 26.Lakeside took a 4-14 lead in the first quarter as Schlader scored Prairie’s 4 points. Schwartz scored a lay-up to make it 6-14 at the end of the first quarter. Lakeside scored the first 5 points of the second quarter to go up by 13 but Prairie rallied back with a 13-5 stretch to get back within 5. Schwartz scored on a drive as did Schlader. Forsmann scored a lay-up to make it 12-19. After a 3 by Lakeside, Gehring scored a 2 and then a 3 to cut the lead to 5. After a Lakeside basket, Schlader made 2 free throws to again cut the deficit to 5 at 19-24. Lakeside then scored for a 19-26 lead at the half. A steal by Schlader led to a lay-up by Forsmann to open the second half. After a Lakeside basket, Forsmann converted a 3-point play to make it 24-28 with 5:45 left in the third. From that point on Lakeside took control. Lakeside scored 14 straight points before Gehring scored a lay-up to end the third quarter and make it 26-42. Lakeside opened the fourth quarter with 5 straight before Schlader made a 3. Lakeside came back with 2 free throws that were answered by Forsmann, who also made 2 free throws. Lakeside then scored 6 straight before Caden Armbrust scored a free throw. After another 7 straight points by Lakeside, Sam Rehder made a basket and Max Rehder scored at the buzzer. Schlader scored 11 and had 12 rebounds to lead the Pirates. Forsmann scored 9 while Gehring scored 7. Schwartz scored 4 while Max Rehder and Sam Rehder each scored 2 and Armbrust scored 1. At Kendrick The game at Kendrick was
between the top two teams in the league. Kendrick had won the first
matchup after taking a big lead and withstanding a Prairie rally that
gave the Pirates a lead after 3 quarters. This time the game was close throughout as the biggest lead either team had was 8 points.Forsmann got Prairie started with a lay-up and then a 3 for a 5-0 lead. Kendrick answered with a 3 but Forsmann scored another lay-up. After a Kendrick basket, Shears scored to make it 9-5. Kendrick then took their first lead with a 0-5 run but Schlader scored to put the Pirates back on top at 11-10. Kendrick then made a pair of 3 for an 11-15 lead. Gehring scored to cut it to 2 but Kendrick answered for a 13-17 lead after the first period. Forsmann scored to make it a 2-point game to start the second quarter but Kendrick came back with 2 baskets for their biggest lead of the game at 15-21. Prairie came right back with Schwartz, Gehring and Schlader all connecting from 3-point range for a 9-0 run and a 24-21 lead. Kendrick scored to get back within 1 but Forsmann scored on a tip-in to give Prairie a 26-23 lead at the half. Kendrick opened the third quarter scoring but Schlader scored a pair of lay-ups and Shears hit a 3 to give Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 33-25. A Kendrick score was answered by Forsmann as Prairie led 35-27 with 3:40 left in the third quarter. Kendrick then scored 8 straight to tie the game. The tying basket was a 3-pointer at the third quarter buzzer making it 35-35. Schwartz opened the fourth quarter with a 3 and Shears followed with a basket for a 40-35 lead. Kendrick scored a basket and Shears answered to make it 42-27 with 4:33 left. Kendrick then took back the lead with a 0-7 run that made it 42-44 with 2:55 to play. Shears made 2 of 4 free throws to tie it with 1:56 to play. Schlader then hit a 3 to give Prairie the lead for good at 47-44. Schwartz and Shears followed with 2 free throw each to put Prairie up 51-44 with 34 seconds to play. A 3 by Kendrick with 25 seconds left and a putback with 14 seconds left cut the lead to 51-49. Forsmann then scored the clinching basket with 4 seconds left to give Prairie the win. The win left the two team with identical 10-1 league records with 1 league game left to play. Prairie plays Potlatch and Kendrick plays Lapwai, both on Friday, Feb. 13. Forsmann led the Pirates in scoring with 15 points while Shears scored 13, Schlader 12, Schwartz 8 and Gehring 5. Prairie had a 24-16 advantage on the boards led by Schlader with 8 and Forsmann with 7. Schlader and Gehring each had 3 steals and 4 assists. Schwartz led the Pirates with 5 assists. Prairie was 20 for 36 from the field, 56%, and 6 for 8 at the line, 75%. Kendrick was 20 for 42 from the field, 48%, and 3 for 5 at the line, 60%. Prairie is now 10-1 in league and 13-5 overall. Kendrick won the JV game 41-51. Prairie fell behind 2-8 at the start but 5 straight points by Forsmann cut the deficit to 1 at 7-8. Kendrick then scored 8 straight to take a 7-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kendrick hit a 3 to open the second quarter for a 12-point lead. Prairie then scored 12 straight points to tie it at 19-19. Kade Quintal started the run with a 3. Warren stole the ball and scored. Labrum scored a lay-up. Rehder scored from 3 and Quintal tied it after a steal by Rehder. Kendrick responded with a 2-8 run to take a 21-27 lead at the half. Forsmann scored Prairie’s basket in that run. Forsmann opened the second half with a basket but Kendrick then scored a pair of baskets. A lay-up by Forsmann and a 3 by Warren cut the deficit to 3 at 28-31. Kendrick then ended the third quarter with 7 straight to take a 28-38 lead. Prairie opened the fourth quarter with 9 straight points. Warren scored 3 lay-ups and Forsmann added a 3 to make it 37-38 with 5:10 to play. Kendrick then outscored Prairie 4-13 the rest of the way. Labrum and Warren each scored a basket for Prairie. Forsmann wound up with 14 points to lead the JV’s while Warren scored 13. Quintal scored 5, Labrum 4, Rehder 3 and Fitch 2. Kendrick had a 21-28 rebounding edge. Forsmann led Prairie with 8 rebounds.
