Pirates win 1 of 2 The Prairie Pirates split a pair of games this past week. On Tuesday, Feb. 4 they hosted Orofino and won 46-29. On Friday, Feb. 7, they traveled to Kendrick and lost a league game 31-58. Vs. Orofino Briggs Rambo got things
started for the Pirates as he stole the ball and drove for a lay-up.
Orofino tied it but Matt Wemhoff put the Pirates back on top with 2
free throws.
Orofino tied it again and then took the lead with a 3-pointer. At about
that point coach Tim Scheffler subbed in 5 different players. Logan
Weber scored to cut the lead to 1 but Orofino answered with a free
throw to make it 6-8 with 3:01 left. With just over 2 minutes to play, Scheffler put the starters back in and they responded by ending the quarter with a 9-0 run. Nate Forsmann started it with 2 free throws. Rambo added a basket on an inbounds play. Phil Schwartz hit a 3 and Rambo closed out the quarter with a lay-up to make it 15-8. Wemhoff stole the second quarter inbounds pass and scored to make it 17-8. Orofino answered with a pair of basket before Rambo scored a lay-up. Orofino hit a 3 to pull within 4 at 19-15 but Prairie then closed out the half with an 11-2 run. Wemhoff drove for a lay-up and Forsmann scored a putback. Orofino scored then Forsmann scored a lay-up. Schwartz hit a 3 and then closed out the half with a drive for a reverse lay-up in the final seconds to make it 30-17 at the break. Orofino scored a pair of baskets to open the second half before Prairie got on the board with 2 free throws by Schwartz. After a basket and a free throw by Orofino, Wemhoff sank a 3-pointer. Orofino scored but Rambo responded with a putback. Orofino then closed out the quarter with a lay-up and a free throw leaving Prairie with a 37-29 lead after 3. Prairie dominated the fourth quarter as they shut out the Maniacs, outscoring them 9-0. Levi Gehring scored on a drive to open the fourth quarter. Forsmann scored on an inbounds play. Riley Shears scored on a jumper from the elbow and Schwartz scored the game’s final points on a 3 with 2:10 left. Schwartz wound up as the game’s leading scorer with 13 points with Rambo scoring 10. Wemhoff scored 9, Forsmann 8 and Shears, Weber and Gehring 2 each. Prairie dominated the glass 47-22. Rambo led the Pirates with 9 rebounds while Wemhoff, Forsmann and Weber each had 8. Wemhoff had 4 steals and Schwartz, Shears, Wemhoff and Gehring each had 2 assists. Prairie was 18 for 51 from the field, 35%, and 6 for 8 at the line, 75%. Orofino was 12 for 42 from the field, 29%, and 3 for 7 at the line, 43%. The JV game was cut back to 2 quarters at the request of the Orofino administration due to the snowy road conditions. Prairie struggled to get anything going on offense as they couldn’t get any shots to drop on the way to a 10-24 loss. Orofino scored first with a free throw and Prairie tied it with a free throw by Ben Secrest. Orofino took the lead and Prairie tied it again with a lay-up by Secrest. That turned out to be the only basket from field by a Pirate. Orofino then scored 7 straight with 5 coming on free throws. Kade Quintal broke the run with a free throw late in the quarter. Orofino then scored a basket to make it 4-12 at the end of 1. Orofino had the ball out of bounds to start the second quarter and had obviously not played a 2-quarter game before. The player who took the inbounds pass thought you changed ends and turned and drove to Prairie’s basket for a lay-up to make it 6-12. Orofino then scored a 3 and a 2 to take an 11-point lead. Jackson Enneking made a free throw then Orofino made a 2 and a 3 for a 7-22 lead. Chase VonBargen made 2 free throws and Orofino answered with 2 free throws. Max Rehder scored the game’s final point at the free throw line. Secrest led the JVs in scoring with 3 points. VonBargen scored 2. We credited Stetson Hankins with the 2 points Orofino scored for Prairie as he was the closest Prairie player. Quintal, Rehder and Enneking each scored 1. Rebounding was even at 22 each. Enneking and Secrest had 4 each to lead Prairie. VonBargen had 3 steals and Rehder had the only assist. Prairie was 2 for 25 from the field, 8%, 1 for 24 if you count only the Prairie players scoring baskets. They were 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. Orofino was 7 for 24 from the field, 29%, and 8 for 13 at the line, 62%. At Kendrick The game at Kendrick was nothing like the game at Cottonwood a couple weeks ago that Kendrick won on a buzzer beater.I n the previous game Madison and Hudson Kirkland did the bulk of the scoring. This time the Tigers got a more balance effort.Kendrick jumped out to a 0-7 lead on 2 baskets and a 3-pointer. Prairie finally got on the board at the 4:10 mark on a lay-up by Shears. Schwartz followed with a 3 to cut the lead to 5-7. Kendrick then ended the quarter with 6 straight points. In the second quarter, Kendrick’s Cade Silflow, who had scored just 3 points at Cottonwood, got hot from 3-point range as he made 3 straight attempts. He opened the quarter with a 3, his second of the game, to make it 5-16. Prairie got a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer from Shears to get back within 6 before Silflow hit another 3. Gehring scored a lay-up then Hudson Kirkland hit a 3 for Kendrick. Gehring scored a putback then Silflow hit another 3 for a 14-25 lead for the Tigers. Forsmann converted a 3-point play and Gehring scored a lay-up to make it 19-25. Kendrick then scored 5 straight before Schwartz closed out the half with a putback to make it 21-30. Prairie would get within 9 points twice more but would get no closer. The last time came with 2:03 left in the quarter when Forsmann scored a putback to make it 31-40. That turned out to be Prairie’s final points of the game. Kendrick scored the final 5 of the third quarter for a 31-45 lead, and then shut out the Pirates in the fourth quarter, 0-13. Schwartz wound up the leading scorer for Prairie with 11 points with Shears scoring 9, Gehring 6 and Forsmann 5. Prairie had a 31-22 rebounding edge led by Forsmann with 11. Gehring, Wemhoff and Schwartz each had 1 steal and Forsmann had 3 assists. Prairie was 11 for 43 from the field, 26%, and 6 for 6 at the line, 100%. Kendrick was 25 for 45 from the field, 56%, and 1 for 3 at the line, 33%. Prairie is now 10-7 on the season and 4-6 in league play. In the JV game it was close through the first quarter and Kendrick blew it open in the second on their way to a 33-61 win. Kendrick scored first and VonBargen gave Prairie their first lead with a 3. After 5 points by Kendrick, VonBargen and Quintal each hit a 3 and Caden Armbrust scored a lay-up for an 11-7 lead. After a Kendrick basket, Quintal scored to make it 13-9. Kendrick then took over scored the final 7 points of the quarter to take a 13-16 lead. They then outscored Prairie 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 20-33 halftime lead. Prairie made just 2 baskets in the quarter, 1 each by Quintal and Armbrust, and 3 free throws, all by VonBargen. The third quarter was more of the same as Prairie was outscored 4-20. Max Rehder scored both of Prairie’s baskets in the quarter as the team was 2 for 10 from the field. Secrest opened the fourth quarter scoring then Kendrick scored 6 straight to invoke the running clock rule. Hankins hit a 3 and Rehder and Kento Morita each scored as Prairie had a 7-0 run. Kendrick then scored the final basket. VonBargen scored 9 to lead the JV’s in scoring. Quintal scored 7, Rehder 6, Armbrust 4, Hankins 3 and Secrest and Morita 2 each. Kendrick dominated the boards 19-44. Rehder led the Pirates with 6 rebounds while Quintal had 5. Enneking had 4 steals and Quintal had 5 assists. Prairie was 13 for 46 from the field, 28%, and 3 for 8 at the line, 38%. Kendrick was 24 for 50 from the field, 48%, and 10 for 22 at the line, 45%.
