Pirates win twice
The Prairie Pirates finished their regular season with a pair of home wins. On Thursday, Feb. 12, they defeated Grangeville 69-30. On Friday, Feb. 16, on Senior Night, they defeated Potlatch 50-37.
The win against Potlatch clinched a share of the league championship with Kendrick and gave the Pirates the #1 seed into District due to the tiebreaker. They will open District play on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Lewiston High School at 4:30 p.m. against the Vs. Grangeville
The Pirates started out hot against Grangeville as they made their first 4 shots and 5 of their first 6, all from 3-point range from each of the 5 starters. Phil Schwartz started it with a 3. After a Grangeville basket, Levi Gehring and Riley Shears each connected for 3. After a Grangeville free throws, Patrick Schlader made a 3. After a Grangeville 3, Nate Forsmann hit a 3 for a 15-6 lead. Shears, Schwartz and Schlader then each scored a 2-point basket for a 21-6 lead. Grangeville scored to close the first quarter with prairie up 21-8.
Schlader scored the first 10 points of the second quarter on a 3, a lay-up, 2 free throws and another 3 to make it 31-8. Shears then hit a 3 to make it 34-8. After a Grangeville basket, Schlader hit another 3. After a Grangeville free throw, Forsmann hit a 3 and Shears scored a lay-up to make it 42-11. Grangeville scored a basket then Forsmann scored a lay-up and Schlader hit another 3, his fourth of the quarter and fifth of the half, to make it 47-13. Grangeville scored again to make it 47-15 at the half.
The Pirates cooled off in the third quarter as they hit just 3 of 14 shots and were outscored 8-11 by Grangeville. Forsmann had a putback and a 3-point play in the quarter while Gehring added a 3. Prairie led 55-26 after 3 quarters.
Grangeville opened the fourth with a pair of free throws then prairie scored 9 straight points to invoke the running clock mercy rule. Forsmann scored a pair of lay-ups. Schlader added a lay-up and Gehring converted a 3-point play for a 64-28 lead. After Grangeville scored their final basket, Caden Armbrust added a 3 and a lay-up to end the game.
Schlader scored 23 to lead the Pirates and added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Forsmann scored 17 while Shears scored 10, Gehring 9 and Schwartz and Armbrust 5 each.
Prairie had a 36-22 advantage on the boards.
Schlader had 2 steals and Shears had 6 assists while Schwartz added 5 assists.
Prairie was 26 for 53 from the field, 49%, and 4 for 4 at the line, 100%. Grangeville was 11 for 41 from the field, 27%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%.
Prairie also won the JV game by a nearly identical score, 67-30.
The Pirates jumped out to a 17-5 lead. Austin Labrum started the scoring then Sam Rehder hit a 2 and a 3 for a 7-0 lead. A Grangeville basket was answered by Isaiah Warren, After a free throw and a basket by Grangeville cut the lead to 9-5, Prairie scored 8 straight. Anthony Forsmann scored 2 lay-ups. Labrum stole the ball and scored and Kade Quintal drove the length of the floor for a lay-up. Grangeville closed the quarter by outscoring Prairie 2-5 with Labrum scoring for the Pirates.
Forsmann and Labrum each scored to open the second quarter. After a Grangeville basket, Warren scored a lay-up and a 3 for a 28-12 lead. After a Grangeville basket, Forsmann scored a lay-up and Warren added a free throw. After another Grangeville basket Labrum and Rehder each scored a putback to make it 35-16. Rehder added a free throw but Grangeville scored 2 baskets to make it 36-20 at the half.
Prairie dominated the third quarter hitting 10 of 15 shots as they outscored Grangeville 24-8. Quintal had two 3s and 2 lay-ups. Warren and Forsmann each had 3 baskets and Rehder and Labrum each scored a free throw as Prairie took a 60-28 lead into the fourth quarter. The entire quarter was played with a running clock. Prairie outscored Grangeville 7-2 in the fourth. Gabe Severns had a lay-up and a 3 while Warren added a baseline shot.
Warren scored 16 to lead the Pirates while Forsmann had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Quintal scored 12, Labrum 11, Rehder 9 and Severns 5.
Grangeville had a 36-39 edge on the boards.
Forsmann had 5 steals while Rehder had 10 assists.
Prairie was 29 for 63 from the field, 46%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%. Grangeville was 14 for 51 from the field, 27%, and 2 for 6 at the line, 33%.
Prairie lost the C game 35-41.

Vs. Potlatch
Nine senior basketball players and 3 senior cheerleaders were honored prior to the varsity game against Potlatch. They were: Gehring, Shears, Schwartz, Schlader,Phil Schwartz drives from the corner toward the basket against Potlatch. Forsmann, Chase VonBargen, Max Rehder, Jackson Enneking and Armbrust for the basketball team and Bailey Key, Brehanna Fowler and Alaina Lustig for the cheerleaders.
Schlader scored the game’s first 2 points but Potlatch tied it. Schlader then drove for a lay-up that put Prairie in the lead. Forsmann followed with a lay-up. After a free throw by Potlatch, VonBargen scored. Potlatch scored again then VonBargen made the second of 2 free throws. Potlatch scored a free throw to make it 9-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Rehder and Shears each hit a 3 to open the second quarter and put Prairie up by 9 at 15-6. A Potlatch basket was answered with 2 free throws by Schlader. Potlatch scored 5 straight but Prairie answered with a 3 and a lay-up by Schlader. After a Potlatch basket, Schlader hit another 3 to make it 25-15. Potlatch scored at the buzzer to make it 25-17 at the half.
The Loggers opened the third quarter with a basket but Forsmann answered with a lay-up. Potlatch then went on an 11-point run to take their first lead of the game at 27-30 with 3:10 left in the third quarter. Prairie finally broke the run at the 2:40 mark on a drive for a lay-up by Schlader. Shears followed with a 3 from the top of the key that put Prairie back on top for good at 32-30. A Potlatch free throw made it 32-31 after 3 quarters.
Prairie opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run. Forsmann and Gehring each scored a lay-up and Schlader hit a 3 for a 39-31 lead. After a 3 by Potlatch, Prairie then scored 8 straight points. Gehring and Shears each scored a lay-up. Gehring then stole the ball and passed to Shears for another lay-up. Forsmann then scored a lay-up to make it 47-34 with 2:28 to play. Potlatch scored a 3 with 1:46 left but that would be their final points. Shears closed out the scoring a minute later with a 3.
Schlader again was the leading scorer with 19 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Shears scored 13 while Forsmann scored 8, Gehring 4 and VonBargen and Rehder 3 each.
Prairie had a 30-23 advantage on the boards.
Schwartz had 2 steals and Shears and Schwartz had 3 assists each.
Prairie was 20 for 43 from the field, 47%, and 3 for 5 at the line, 60%. Potlatch was 13 for 42 from the field, 31%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%.
Prairie ends their regular season with a record of 15-5 overall and 11-1 in league play.
Prairie lost the JV game 45-65.
Potlatch started the game with a 3-pointer. Warren and Forsmann each scored to give Prairie what turned out to be their only lead of the game at 4-3. Potlatch then scored 7 straight points to take the lead for good. The Loggers led 11-18 after one quarter. Labrum made 2 free throws, Quintal hit a 3 and Rehder drove for a lay-up for Prairie’s points in the quarter.
A basket by Forsmann and a steal and ensuing lay-up by Warren cut the deficit to 5 at 15-20 in the second quarter. Potlatch then scored 16 straight points to blow the game open. Prairie closed the half with 7 straight points on a lay-up by Forsmann, a 3-point play by Labrum and a lay-up by Forsmann to make it 22-36 at the half.
Rehder hit 4 straight free throws to open the second half and cut the lead to 10. Phineas Fitch then scored Prairie’s next 4 points with a lay-up and 2 free throws as Prairie trailed 30-41. Potlatch then scored 4 straight for a 15-point lead but Quintal made 2 free throws and Forsmann scored a putback to make it 34-35 after 3 quarters.
Potlatch scored the first 7 points of the fourth quarter before Labrum made the second of 2 free throws. After another 5 straight by Potlatch, Fitch hit a 3 and Warren added a free throw. Fitch had a free throw and Stetson Hankins made 2 at the line before Warren closed out the scoring with a 3.
Forsmann had a double-double to lead the JVs with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Warren and Fitch scored 8 each while Rehder and Labrum scored 6 each. Quintal scored 5 and Hankins 2.
Prairie had a 41-35 advantage on the boards with Labrum tying Forsmann for team high with 12.
Warren and Forsmann each had 2 steals and Rehder had 4 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 47 from the field, 28%, and 16 for 23 at the line, 70%. Potlatch was 24 for 61 from the field, 39%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%.
Prairie won the C game 56-29.
Prairie led 8-2 after 1 quarter with Warren scored 3 baskets and Hankins 2 free throws.
Both teams stepped it up in the second quarter but Prairie outscored the Loggers 21-13 to lead 29-15 at the half. Hankins added 4 more baskets while Warren made 2 baskets and 3 free throws. Ray Terhaar made 2 baskets and Fitch added a basket.
The third quarter saw neither team shoot well as Prairie was 3 for 17 and potlatch was 2 for 12. Labrum scored all 3 Prairie baskets while Matt Frei added a free throw as Prairie took a 36-19 lead into the fourth quarter.
Prairie outscored Potlatch 20-8 in the fourth quarter as Fitch scored 2 baskets and a free throw. Severns and Terhaar had 2 baskets each. Hankins had a basket and a free throw, Matthew Jones had a basket and Frei had 2 free throws.
Hankins was the leading scorer and had a double-double with 13 points and 10 steals. Severns had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Terhaar scored 8, Warren and Fitch 7 each, Labrum 6, Frei 3 and Jones 2.
Prairie had a 59-40 advantage on the boards. Frei led the team with 13 rebounds while Fitch was also in double figures with 11.
Hankins also led the team with 4 assists while Frei had 3.
Prairie was 23 for 56 from the field, 41%, and 10 for 22 at the line, 45%. Potlatch was 12 for 58 from the field, 21%, and 4 for 11 at the line, 36%.
