Lady Pirates advance to State
The Prairie Lady Pirates had to take the long route to get to the State Tournament. In the District Championship game on Tuesday, Feb. 10, they lost to Lapwai 23-41 at Lewiston. On Thursday, Feb. 12, they won the second place game at District 54-42 over Kamiah at Lewiston. Finally, on Saturday, Feb. 14, they traveled to Cascade where they defeated Raft River 59-40 in a state play-in game.
They will advance to State as the #4 seed and will play Lakeside at 2 p.m. MST at Columbia High School in Nampa on Thursday, Feb. 19.
District Championship vs. Lapwai
In the District Championship game against Lapwai, Prairie scored first as Erica Schlader scored a basket. Lapwai took the lead for good with a 3-point play at the 5:59 mark. After a free throw and a basket by Lapwai, Sydney Shears scored a free throw. Hailey Hanson added 2 free throws after a Lapwai free throw. Lapwai closed the quarter with 2 free throws for a 6-11 lead after one quarter.
Lapwai defensively emphasized taking Sage Elven and Kylie Schumacher out of Prairie’s offense. They combined for just 1 shot attempt in the first quarter. Lapwai also play full-court defense nearly the entire game. They scored the first 5 points of the second quarter before Schlader scored a basket at the 3:38 mark. Lapwai answered that with a 3. Beka Schumacher scored a free throw and a basket for Prairie’s final points of the first half as they trailed 11-23 at the break. Elven sat out the entire second quarter after she picked up her third foul near the end of the third quarter.
Lapwai scored the first 4 points of the second half before Prairie had their best stretch of the game. Kylie Schumacher scorer her first point at the free throw line. Beka Schumacher the scored a pair of baskets to make it 5 straight points. After a Lapwai free throw, Kylie Schumacher made 2 free throws to get Prairie back within 10 points at 18-28. Lapwai then scored a basket to take an 18-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Any momentum Prairie had died as the fourth quarter started with Lapwai outscoring Prairie 2-8 to start the period. Kylie Schumacher scored her first, and only, basket of the game on a putback. Down 20-38, Elven scored her only 2 points of the game at the free throw line with 2:13 to play. Halee Rowland scored Prairie’s final point of the game.
Beka Schumacher wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with just 7 points. Schlader and Kylie Schumacher scored 5 points each. Hanson and Elven scored 2 each and Shears and Rowland scored 1 each.
Despite it seeming like Lapwai was grabbing most of the rebounds, they outrebounded Prairie just 41-42. Kylie Schumacher had 11 to lead the Pirates while Elven added 8.
Elven had 4 steals and Shears had 3 assists.
Prairie made just 6 of 35 from the field, 17%, and 11 of 28 at the line, 39%. Lapwai was 13 for 53 from the field, 25%, and 13 of 19 at the line, 68%.’
Prairie was whistled for 18 fouls while Lapwai was hit with 19. Prairie had 26 turnovers compared to 18 for Lapwai.

District 2nd Place Game vs. Kamiah

Elven scored on an inbounds feed from Shears to put Prairie on the scoreboard. Shears then tied it on a lay-up. Kamiah took back the lead with a free throw. Prairie then took the lead for good as Kylie Schumacher scored a basket and then two free throws. Shears drove for a lay-up to make it 10-5. Kamiah scored a pair of free throws then Prairie closed out the first quarter with 5 straight points. Shears scored on an inbounds feed from Hanson then Reagan Brannan scored a free throw and then a basket to make it 15-7 after one quarter.
Kamiah scored to start the second quarter and Kylie Schumacher answered. Kamiah scored 4 straight to get within 4 points. Shears scored with 1 minute left. Kamiah then scored the final 3 points of the half to pull within 3 at 19-16.
Hanson scored to open the second half and Krogh answered for Kamiah. Prairie then scored 8 straight to push their lead to 11. Kylie Schumacher made 2 free throws. Schlader scored a basket and Elven scored twice to make it 29-18. Kamiah then answered back with a 2-8 run to get back within 5. Beka Schumacher scored Prairie’s only points in that run. At 31-26, Beka Schumacher scored two lay-ups to put the lead to 9. Kamiah answered with 3 free throws to get back within 6. Brannan scored to close out the third quarter with Prairie up 37-29.
Shears scored on an inbounds feed from Hanson to open the fourth quarter but Krogh answered. Hanson scored but Krogh answered with a 3-point play. Prairie then scored 7 straight to push their lead to 14. Hanson scored a lay-up. Brannan then went to the free throw on what was called an intentional foul meaning two free throws and the ball. Brannan made both free throws and on the ensuing possession, Elven hit a 3 for a 5-point possession. Krogh broke the run with a free throw but Brannan answered with a lay-up. After a Kamiah basket, Shears scored to make it 52-37 with 1:10 to play. Krogh scored a basket and a 3 to get within 10 but their was just 23 seconds left. Hanson closed out the scored with 2 free throws.
Shears led the Pirates in scoring with 12 points. Elven and Brannan each scored 9. Hanson and Kylie Schumacher each scored 8. Beka Schumacher scored 6 and Schlader scored 2.
Prairie had a 36-30 advantage on the boards. Kylie Schumacher had 12 to lead the Pirates.
Hanson, Shears and Kylie Schumacher each had 3 steals and Hanson had 9 assists.
Prairie was 22 for 52 from the field, 42%, and 9 for 16 at the line, 56%. Kamiah was 12 for 37 from the field, 32%. Krogh was 10 for 20 from the field and the rest of the team was 2 for 17. The Kubs were 15 for 27 at the line, 56%.

Play-in vs. Raft River
In what we believe is the third time Prairie has been in a play-in game at Cascade, Prairie improved to 3-0 in such games. The other two we are aware of were back in the 1980s. Kylie Schumacher hits a 3 at the end of the first half.
Raft River of Malta scored the first two points of the game. Prairie took their first lead on a 3 by Hanson. Kylie Schumacher followed with a free throw and Elven then hit a 3. Prairie never trailed again although they didn’t really pull away until the second half. After a 3 by Raft River, Hanson and Shears each scored to give Prairie an 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Elven opened the second quarter scoring with a free throw. Raft River answered with a basket and a free throw to get back within 4. Kylie Schumacher then took over for the Pirates on offense. She scored a pair of baskets to make it 16-8. Raft River followed with a free throw and a basket. Kylie scored on a drive. Raft River scored a free throw. Kylie then scored another basket. After a putback by Raft River, Kylie closed out the half with a 3 to make it 23-14 at the break. Kylie Schumacher 12 of Prairie’s first half points.
Raft River opened the second half with a pair of free throws. Kylie then showed the halftime break hadn’t cooled her off as she made a pair of baskets to make it 27-16. After a Raft River basket, Beka Schumacher scored a basket and Kylie converted a 3-point play to make it 32-18. Raft River and Kylie Schumacher alternated 2 baskets each then Raft River hit a 3. Shears made a free throw and Beka Schumacher closed out the third quarter with a lay-up to make it 38-25.
Shears opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up. Raft River answered with 2 free throws. Elven and Kylie Schumacher each scored to make it 44-27. After 2 more free throws then Kylie made a free throw that kicked of an 8-0 run. Kylie followed with a 3-point play. Elven scored after a steal and Kylie scored another basket to make it 52-29. After a Raft River basket Hanson scored a lay-up and Halee Rowland converted a 3-point play to make it 57-31 with 2:37 left. Raft River scored and Hanson answered with 2 free throws to make it 59-33 with 1:25 left to play. At that point coach Teel Bruner sent the subs into the game to finish it out. Raft River was able to score the final 7 points of the game to cut the final margin to 19.
Kylie Schumacher wound up with 30 points to lead all scorers. Hanson scored 9 with Elven scoring 8, Shears 5, Beka Schumacher 4 and Rowland 3.
Prairie had a 35-32 advantage on the boards. Shears led the team with 8 while Elven and Kylie Schumacher had 6 each.

Prairie was 23 for 42 from the field, 55%, and 10 for 22 at the line, 45%. Raft River was 13 for 46 from the field, 28%, and 12 for 21 at the line, 57%.
Prairie takes a 20-5 record into the state tournament.
