Lady Pirates win District title
The Prairie Lady Pirates won their first District Championship since
2012 when they defeated Lapwai 68-49 at Lewiston Wednesday, Feb. 12.
![]() Prairie and Lapwai had played for the District title every year since 2014 making this the 12th straight matchup and Lapwai had won the previous 11. Kamiah and Lapwai met for the District title in 2013 and Prairie beat Lapwai in 2012. This also makes the 15th straight year that Prairie has made it to the State Tournament. The game didn’t start well for Prairie as Lapwai took the early lead and led by as many as 7 at 8-15. Lexi Schumacher scored 6 of Prairie’s first 8 points with Kylie Schumacher scoring the other 2. Prairie outscored Lapwai 5-2 over the final 2 minutes of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 13-17. All 5 points came at the free throw line with Kylie Schumacher hitting 3 of 6 attempts and Nadia Cash going 2 for 2. A steal by Cash to start the second quarter led to a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher. After a Lapwai free throw, Prairie scored 9 straight points to take their first lead of the game. Elven made a free throw and Lexi Schumacher scored a putback. Elven scored a lay-up and a putback and Kylie Schumacher added a lay-up on a feed from Elven to make it 24-18. Lapwai rallied back with 6 straight to tie it with 2:20 left in the half. Elven then scored 2 free throws to put Prairie back on top. Hailey Hanson sank a 3 and Lexi Schumacher closed out the half with a lay-up. Lexi’s basket came after Prairie had missed 3 close in shots and Lapwai had rebounded the third miss. Lexi stole the ball and scored to make it 31-24 at the half. Hanson scored to open the second half. Lapwai answered with a free throw. Elven scored a basket and Lexi Schumacher added a free throw for a 36-25 lead. After a Lapwai basket, Hanson scored another 3 and Lexi Schumacher a lay-up to make it 41-27. After a Lapwai free throw, Kylie Schumacher scored on a feed from Elven. Lapwai put a pair of baskets together to get back within 11 at 43-32 but Prairie closed out the third quarter with 3 straight baskets by Elven. She scored on a feed from Sydney Shears, stole the ball and scored and scored on a feed from Kylie Schumacher. That made it 49-32 after 3 quarters. Lapwai scored to open the fourth quarter but Prairie then scored 5 straight to take a 20-point lead. Kylie Schumacher scored a lay-up and then two free throws. Lexi Schumacher added a free throw to make it 54-34. Lapwai scored a 3 and then a free throw but Lexi Schumacher answered by hitting 4 of 6 free throws to again put Prairie up by 20 at 58-38. Lapwai then rallied with a 1-9 run to get back within 12 at 59-47. Kylie Schumacher scored Prairie’s only point in the run. Elven then scored 6 straight points on a baskets and 4 free throws to put Prairie up 65-47 with 35 seconds left. Lapwai’s final points came on 2 free throws and Lexi Schumacher followed by hitting 3 of 4 at the line for the final 19 point margin. Lexi Schumacher wound up as the leading scorer with 23 points. Elven was right behind with 21 points. Kylie Schumacher scored 14 with Hanson scoring 8 and Cash 2. Prairie had a 50-41 advantage on the boards led by Kylie Schumacher who had 18 rebounds. Elven added 11 boards and Shears had 10. Elven had 7 steals and 5 assists while Lexi Schumacher added 3 steals and Kylie Schumacher had 3 assists. Prairie was 21 for 64 from the field, 33%, and 24 for 39 at the line, 62%. Lapwai was 17 for 56 from the field, 30%, and 10 for 17 at the line, 59%. Prairie takes an 20-2 record into the State Tournament where they will open against Liberty Charter, the District 3 champion, at 2 p.m. MST on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Columbia High School in Nampa.
