Lady Pirates take second at State For the second straight year and the ninth time since 2014 that the Prairie Lady Pirates have finished in second place at State. On Thursday, Feb. 19, they beat Lakeside 53-34 at Columbia High School in Nampa. On Friday, Feb. 20, they defeated #1 seeded Butte County 41-31, also at Columbia High School. On Saturday, Feb. 21, they played Lapwai in the state championship game and lost for the 9th time in 11 state championship meetings between the two schools, 29-40. Prairie beat Lapwai in 1997 and 2014 in the state championship game but lost in 1989, 2002, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2022. Vs. Lakeside In their first round game
#4 seeded Prairie match ed up with #5 seeded Lakeside, who was actually
#10 in the MaxPreps rankings but 5 through 9 all failed to make it to
State. Prairie jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Kylie Schumacher scored 2 baskets and Hailey Hanson 1. Lakeside got on the board with a basket but Prairie answered with a basket by Sage Elven. After another Lakeside basket. Prairie scored 6 straight points all by Kylie Schumacher. Shear was 2 for 4 at the line and added a pair of lay-ups to make it 14-4. Lakeside scored a lay-up and 2 free throws before Kylie Schumacher ended the first quarter scoring with a putback that made it 16-8. Lakeside went 3 for 4 at the line to open the second quarter then Prairie scored 5 straight points. Kylie Schumacher had a putback, Elven a free throw and Kylie a lay-up to make it a double digit lead at 21-11. A 3 by Lakeside was answered with a putback and a lay-up by Kylie. After a Lakeside baskets, Prairie scored the final 5 points of the half. Sydney Shears hit a 3 from the top of the key after an offensive board by Elven and Kylie Schumacher then added a lay-up for a 30-16 halftime lead. Hanson opened the second halfscoring with a 3 and Lakeside answered with 2 free throws. Kylie Schumacher answered with a lay-up. Lakeside scored a basket and Shears made a free throw. Lakeside hit a 3 and Kylie answered with a lay-up. Lakeside then scored 2 free throws and a basket to get within 11 at 38-27. Kylie Schumacher scored a putback to end the third quarter with Prairie up by 13 at 40-27. In the fourth prairie scored the first 7 points. Hanson and Elven scored lay-ups then Elven hit a 3 from the corner on an inbounds play to make it 47-27. Lakeside scored a 3 and a 2 to get back within 15 but a free throw by Hanson, a lay-up by Kylie Schumacher and a 3 by Elven made it 53-32 with 1:40 to play. Lakeside then scored the game’s final points on 2 free throws. Kylie Schumacher had 30 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Elven also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hanson scored 8 and Shears 4. Prairie dominated the boards 56-24. Nearly hitting double figures on the boards was Hanson with 9. Shears had 5 steals while Elven had 4. Elven and Hanson each had 5 assists. Prairie was 22 for 61 from the field, 36%, and 5 for 14 at the line, 36%. Lakeside was 10 for 47 from the field, 21% and 11 for 12 at the line, 92%. Butte County came into the game as the #1 seed at the tournament but
led Prairie for just 3 minutes of the game. It
started slowly for both teams as Butte County scored first at the 6:39
mark. Prairie didn’t score until the 3:40 mark when Shears hit a
3-pointer. That kicked off a 10-0 Prairie scoring run. Elven followed
with a pair of baskets and Shears hit another 3 to close out the first
quarter scoring and give Prairie a 10-2 lead.Butte scored the first 4 points of the second quarter to get within 4 before Elven scored. After a Butte free throw, Beka Schumacher, Elven and Hanson each scored for an 18-7 lead. After a basket by Butte County, Kylie Schumacher scored a free throw to make it 19-9 at the half. Butte scored the first 4 points of the second half to get back within 6. Kylie Schumacher, who received extra defensive attention from Butte due to consecutive 30-point outings, scored her first basket of the game to make it 21-13. Butte then scored a pair of baskets to get within 4. Prairie then held them scoreless for the final 2:30 of the quarter while Prairie scored 8 straight points with 6 of those coming on 8 free throw attempts. Elven had 3 of those free throws while Shears had 2 and Beka Schumacher had 1. Shears had the only basket in that run, a lay-up with an assist from Beka. Prairie led 29-17 after 3 quarters. With Butte County going to man defense in the fourth, Prairie went to a flex offense and Shears benefitted from a couple of wide-open lay-ups. She scored to open the fourth but Butte answered with 4 free throws and a basket to get within 8 at 31-23 with 3:48 to play. Elven scored on a putback and Butte answered with a basket and a 3-point play to pull within 5 at 33-28 with 2:27 left. Shears hit another wide-open lay-p and Kylie Schumacher followed with a basket to push the lead back to 9. Butte hit a 3 with 1:13 left but that turned out to be their final points of the game. Prairie converted 4 of 6 at the line in the final 30 seconds to make the final margin of 10 points. Shears had 2 free throws with Hanson and Kylie Schumacher had 1 each. Shears led Prairie in scoring with 16 points. Elven stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 9 steals. Kylie Schumacher scored 6 while Hanson and Beka Schumacher scored 3 each. Butte County had a 27-30 edge on the boards. Hanson added 5 steals as Prairie forced 26 turnovers. Elven and Kylie Schumacher each had 3 assists. against Lapwai got off to a good start for Prairie as Lapwai, maybe due
to having to go to overtime the night before against Oakley, couldn’t
buy a basket. ![]() Kylie Schumacher put Prairie on the scoreboard with a lay-up at the 6:04 mark. She then made 2 free throws. Shears hit a 3. Kylie added another free throw and Beka Schumacher scored a lay-up to give Prairie a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Lapwai had gone 0- for 17 from the field in the quarter. However the tide started to turn as the second quarter started. They hit their first shot of the second quarter. Beka Schumacher answered. Then Lapwai hit two more shots, a free throw and a 3 to cut Prairie’s lead to 12-10. Hanson broke the 0-8 run with a free throw. Lapwai hit another basket to get within 1. Beka Schumacher scored but Lapwai answered again. Hanson then hit 2 free throws and Kylie Schumacher scored on a drive to make it 19-14 at the half. Lapwai came out in the third quarter with a 0-9 scoring run to take their first lead of the game. Prairie answered with a 6-0 run of their own to retake the lead at 25-23. Kylie Schumacher made 4 free throws and Beka Schumacher scored a lay-up. Unfortunately Lapwai took control at that point. They scored the final 5 points of the third quarter to take a 25-28 lead into the fourth. Lapwai then dominated the fourth quarter as Prairie was held to just 4 free throws while Lapwai went 5 for 9 from the field and 2 for 2 at the line as they pulled away for an 11-point win. Kylie Schumacher had a double-double to lead Prairie with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Beka Schumacher scored 9 while Shears and Hanson scored 3 each. Prairie had a 38-30 advantage on the boards. Hanson and Beka Schumacher had 8 rebounds each. Beka Schumacher had 2 steals and Elven had 3 assists.
