Patriots advance to District title game
The St. John Bosco Patriots advanced to the District Championship game with a 68-62 win over Nezperce Monday, Feb. 23 at Lapwai High School. Connor Nuxoll makes a pass against Nezperce.
They were to play Timberline on Tuesday, Feb. 24. If they won, they advance to State. If they lost they would play the Nezperce-Deary winner at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 at Lapwai. The winner of that game advances to a state play-in game at McCall on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. MST.
Bosco got off to a great start as they made their first 6 shots with each starter scoring at least one basket. Henry Baldwin, Tommy Rose and Connor Nuxoll each scored for a 6-0 lead. After a Nezperce basket, Nathan Wassmuth and Cody Weckman each scored then Nuxoll became the first repeat scorer for a 12-2 lead. That was Bosco’s biggest lead of the game. Nezperce tallied back with three 3-pointers and a 2-pointer to take their first lead at 12-13. Nuxoll and Weckman each scored on inbounds plays as the score was tied at 16 at the end of the first quarter.
Ignatius Parmantier opened the second quarter scoring with a pair of free throws then Nezperce scored 5 straight for an 18-21 lead. Nezperce led 21-25 then Bosco scored 6 straight. Nuxoll hit a 3 then Parmantier made the first of 2 free throws and Wassmuth hit a short turn-around shot to make it 27-25. Nezperce scored in the final seconds to make it 27-27 at the half.
Weckman and Wassmuth each scored to open the third quarter and put Bosco up by 4. A 3 by Nezperce’s Jadin Williams cut the lead to 1 real quick. Baldwin answered with a basket but Nezperce answered with a lay-up. Baldwin scored a pair of baskets for a 5 point lead but another 3 by Williams and a 2-pointer tied it within 35 seconds. Pierce Frei scored on a drive but Williams answered with another 3. Weckman drove for a lay-up and Willimas hit another 3 for a 43-41 lead. Nezperce led the rest of the quarter and took a 48-52 lead into the fourth.
Nezperce opened the fourth with a 2-8 run as they took their biggest lead of the game at 50-60 with 6:02 to play. Bosco responded with a 10-0 run to tie the game with 2:18 left. Weckman scored a pair of baskets. Joseph Waters drove for a lay-up. Wassmuth scored a putback and a blocked shot by Frei led to the tying basket by Nuxoll. Williams made a free throw to put Nezperce back on top but that was to be their final lead. Parmantier scored a lay-up for a 62-61 lead but Nezperce’s Slater Kuther tied it with a free throw with 1:08 to play. Nuxoll then hit a 3-pointer to give Bosco the lead for good. The Patriots added a free throw by Nuxoll and 2 free throws by Waters for their final 6-point margin.
Nuxoll had a double-double to lead the Patriots as he scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds. Weckman scored 17, 13 in the second half. Wassmuth scored 10 while Baldwin scored 8, Parmantier 5, Waters 4, Frei 3 and Rose 2.
The Patriots had a 37-28 advantage on the boards.
Weckman had 2 steals and 4 assists while Parmantier also had 4 assists.
The Patriots were 29 for 50 from the field, 58%, and 7 for 13 at the line, 54%.
They are now 9-6 on the season.
