Schacher wins District title
Avery Schacher extended her winning streak
for the season to 28 matches as the won the District Wrestling
championship in the 170 lb. weight class at the Girls District
Championships at Moscow Thursday, Feb. 19. She is the #3 seed in her bracket at the State Wrestling Championships which will be held at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28. Schacher opened against Maya Mendoza of Lakeland. She scored a takedown
and then won by pin in 21 seconds. She won her second round match by
forfeit. In the semifinals she faced Katie Rippentropp of Lake City.
She scored a takedown and then won by pin 1:16 into the match. In the
championship she faced Ariana Turnbull of Sandpoint. She trailed 2-4 at
the end of the first period but took a 9-6 lead into the third period.
She started the third period in the top position but got reversed. 11
seconds later she scored a reversal and then scored the pin at the 4:22
mark to win the District title at 170 lbs. Schacher takes a 28-0 record
into state.Mikayla Rowland opened against Teagan Newsom of Sandpoint and lost by pin in 1:29. In her consolation round match she faced Brooke Hayes of Kellogg and lost by pin in 1:28 to end her season. As a team Prairie finished tied for 9th out of 21 teams with 19 points. Boys District The boys District Meet was held at St. Maries on Saturday, Feb. 21.Ashton Martin came the closest to qualifying for state as he finished 5th and the top 4 advance to State. Martin wrestled at 157 lbs., he opened against Hollis Elliot of Grangeville and lost a 1-16 technical fall in 2:14. In his second match he faced Halston Calanchini of Potlatch and won by pin in 1:57. He then lost by pin to Haiden Leach of Priest River by pin in 3:13 to drop into the 5th-6th place match. In that match he won by technical fall, 17-1 in 4:32. As a 5th place finisher he had a chance to advance to state as a wild card but came up short. At 132 lbs., Zach Schumacher opened against Elan Schwecke of Kendrick and lost by pin in 37 seconds. In the consolation bracket he lost by pin to Liam Pettit of Priest River in 58 seconds to end his season. Carson Lockert wrestled at 175 lbs. and opened with a loss by pin to Eli Morris of Lakeside in 1:43. He then faced Christian Williams of Priest River in the consolation bracket. After a scoreless first period he had the choice started in the down position and was nearly pinned for a 4-point near fall for Williams. He scored an escape and trailed 1-4 after 2 periods. He again started in the down position and scored a reversal. Williams scored a reversal for a 3-6 lead. Lockart scored a reversal to get within 5-6 but time ran out before he could get any near fall points as he lost a 5-6 decision to end his season. Raymond Cross wrestled at 285 lbs. and lost by pin in 42 seconds to Dominick Kager of Lakeside in his opening match. In the consolation bracket he lost by pin in 59 seconds to Amarion Domebo of Lapwai to end his season. As a team Prairie finished in 13th place with 12.5 points. State Wrestling info The State Wrestling Meet is this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28.Avery Schacher will be Prairie’s lone competitor at State this year. She is the #3 seed in the girls 170 lb. bracket and will face Jordan Lewis of Fruitland in her opening round match. Sarah Toribau of Oakley is the #2 seed and Molly Olague of Skyline is the #1 seed. Girls competition is set to start at 9 a.m. MST on Friday with first round action. The 3A and 4A boys also compete in the same timeframe. Championship round 2 and consolation round 1 follow with consolation round 2 gollowing that. In the afternoon starting at 3:15 are the 5A and 6A matches. Championship semifinals and consolation quarterfinals for all classes start at 9 a.m. Saturday. Consolation semifinals start at 11 a.m. The 3rd/4th and 5th/6th matches start at 1 p.m. There will be a parade of athletes at 3:30 p.m. The state championship finals get underway at 4 p.m. All times listed are MST. ![]() Avery Schacher won the District Championship in the 170 lbs. weight class at the girls district meet last Thursday.
