Pirates out in 2 at District For the second straight year the Prairie Pirates lasted just 2 games at the District Tournament. On Wednesday, Feb. 19, they traveled to Lapwai and lost 49-50 in double overtime. They had a bye for the second round and on Monday, Feb. 24, they faced Logos and lost 41-58 at Lewiston High School. At Lapwai The game at Lapwai was how a #4 vs. #5 game should be. Prairie started well as Phil Schwartz scored a basket from the baseline and Riley Shears followed with a 3 from the top of the key for a 5-0 lead. After Lapwai scored, Levi Gehring scored to make it 7-2.
Lapwai came back to tie it at 7 but Shears scored on a drive to the hoop to make it 9-7 at the end of the first quarter. Lapwai took their first lead with a 3-point play to open the second quarter. Prairie came right back with Shears hitting a step back jumper to put Prairie back on top. Matt Wemhoff added a free throw and then hit a 3-pointer for a 15-10 lead. Lapwai hit a 3 to cut the lead to 2 and then the teams traded baskets the rest of the half. Gehring scored on a drive then Lapwai scored. Shears scored then Lapwai scored again to make it 19-17 at the half. The Wildcats tied it with 2 free throws to open the second half. Shears scored to put Prairie back on top. Lapwai answered with a basket to tie it and then a 3 to retake the lead. Nate Forsmann and Shears each scored 2 free throws to put Prairie back on top at 25-24 with 1:49 left in the third quarter. Lapwai then scored a basket to retake the lead and added a free throw for a 25-27 lead after 3 quarters. In the fourth quarter Lapwai built their lead to 9 points at 29-38 with 1:50 left to play. At the 1:12 mark Shears hit a 3-pointer. Gehring stole the ball and that led to another 3 by Shears with 32 seconds left. Shears then stole the ball which led to a 3 by Schwartz that tied it with 6 seconds left. That sent the game into overtime. Lapwai scored 2 free throws to open the overtime but Prairie answered with a basket each by Forsmann and Shears to take a 42-40 lead. Lapwai made a free throw with 1:50 left to get within 1. Prairie was looking to run out the clock as there was no shot clock for the game due to a malfunction with one of the clocks. A shot that wasn’t the best idea missed and Lapwai rebounded and scored a tying free throw. Lapwai tied it again by hitting another free throw, then took the lead back with 8 seconds left. Gehring went to the free throw line with 5.5 seconds left and made 2 free throws to send the game to a second overtime tied at 44-44. Shears made the second of 2 free throws to open the second overtime but Lapwai took back the lead with a basket. Forsmann scored a free throw to tie it at 46 with 2:10 left. Lapwai scored a basket to retake the lead and then 2 free throws to make it 46-50 with 1:29 left to play. Gehring cut the lead to 1 with a 3-pointer with 1:05 left. Prairie wound up getting the ball back on a steal by Gehring with 11 seconds left. They called a timeout to set up a play but Lapwai defended it well and Prairie had to settle for a desperation 3-point shot that came up short at the buzzer. Shears had his second big game in a row with a game high 24 points. Gehring scored 9, Forsmann 7, Schwartz 5 and Wemhoff 4. Lapwai outrebounded Prairie 21-28. Wemhoff and Shears led the Pirates with 7 rebounds each. Gehring had 3 steals and Schwartz had 4 assists. Prairie was 17 for 45 from the field, 38%, and 9 for 14 at the line, 64%. Lapwai was 17 for 46 from the field, 37%, and 15 for 20 at the line, 75%. both teams struggled to score in the opening quarter. It was 1:20 into
the game before Shears scored the game’s first points on a drive to the
hoop. Logos
didn’t score until almost 2 minutes later when Seamus Wilson hit a
short jumper to tie it. Wilson added 2 more baskets as Logos took a 2-6
lead. Shears scored on an inbounds play with 1:59 left in the quarter
to make it 4-6 and that’s where it stood when the quarter ended.Logos started finding the range from 3-point distance in the second quarter as 5 of their 6 baskets in the quarter were 3’s. Meanwhile Prairie was still struggling to score. It wasn’t until the 4:41 mark when Forsmann scored a pair of free throws to make it 6-11. 2 minutes later Shears scored on a drive to the hoop after Logos had scored twice from 3-point range. After another Logos 3, Forsmann made another free throw. Gehring scored to make it 11-20. Logos then hit another 3 to make it 11-23 at the half. In the third Logos opened the scoring with a basket and Shears answered with 2 free throws. After a Logos free throw, Shears again made 2 free throws. Logos answered with a basket by Wilson then Wemhoff scored Prairie’s first field goal of the quarter to make it 17-28. Logos then scored 11 straight points to take a 22-point lead. Gehring broke the drought with a lay-up and Schwartz followed with 2 free throws. Wilson then got fouled on a made 3-pointer and converted a rare 4-point play. Schwartz and Shears each scored in the final minute of the quarter to make it 25-43 after 3 quarters. Logos scored 2 baskets against a midrange shot by Gehring to again take a 20-point lead. Prairie then put their best rally of the game together. Gehring drove for a lay-up, Shears scored a free throw, Forsmann scored a putback and Wemhoff scored a free throw after making a steal. That got the lead down to 33-47. Logos then scored 2 free throws but Shears answered with a 3. After another Logos basket, Schwartz swished a long 3-pointer to get the deficit down to 12 with 3:48 left to play. However Prairie would score just 2 more points the rest of the way, a lay-up by Shears, while Logos scored 7 to win by 17. With the game out of reach in the final minute coach Tim Scheffler subbed in seniors Cole Duclos and Collin Ray who hadn’t played at that point, finishing the season with 4 of the 5 seniors on the floor. The fifth, Logan Weber, was unable to play due to injury. Shears led the Pirates in scoring with 18 points. Gehring scored 8, Schwartz 7, Forsmann 5 and Wemhoff 3. Logos had a 32-34 edge on the boards. Forsmann had 10 to lead the Pirates with Shears adding 8. Wemhoff had 3 steals and Shears had 2 assists. The Pirates were 14 for 46 from the field, 30%, and 11 for 16 at the line, 69%. Logos was 20 for 51 from the field, 39%, and 8 for 12 at the line, 67%. Wilson led the Knights with 29 points. The Pirates end their season with a record of 11-10.
