Lady Pirates take 2nd at State
The Prairie Lady Pirates had 2 blowout wins and then lost to finish second at the 2A Girls State Tournament. On Thursday, Feb. 20, they opened against Liberty Charter and rolled to a 64-22 win. On Friday, Feb. 21, they play Valley and posted a relatively easy 69-40 win over the #3 seeded Vikings. Both of those games were played at Columbia High School in Nampa. Finally on Saturday, they faced #1 seeded Oakley at the Idaho Center and lost 51-62.
It was the 10th time in 15 years as coach that Lori Mader’s teams have reached the championship game and the 8th time they have finished in second.
Vs. Liberty Charter
In the opener against Liberty Charter, Prairie forced 32 turnovers from the District 3 champions as they rolled to an easy win. Kylie Schumacher scores on a lay-up against Liberty Charter. Also shown is Nadia Cash.
Prairie jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Lexi Schumacher set the tone by stealing the ball and scoring the game’s first 2 points. A steal by Sydney Shears led to a 3 by Hailey Hanson. Lexi Schumacher scored a perimeter shot and Hanson scored 2 free throws to make it 9-0. Liberty Charter finally got on the board at the 5:18 mark. Sage Elven then scored after a steal and Shears added a free throw to make it 12-2.
Liberty answered with a 3 and 2 free throws to pull within 5 but Elven scored a lay-up to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
That started a 14-0 run as Prairie scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to take a 26-7 lead. Elven opened the scoring with a lay-up and Kylie Schumacher followed with 3 straight baskets. Elven closed the run with 2 more baskets.
Liberty broke through with a free throw then Lexi Schumacher scored 2 free throws and a lay-up to make it 30-8. After another Liberty free throw, Lexi connected for 3 to make it 33-9. After a Liberty putback, Lexi closed out the first half with a 14 foot shot to make it 35-11 at the half.
Liberty scored the first 2 points of the second half then Prairie scored 14 straight. Shears scored to start the run. A steal by Elven led to her scoring a lay-up Lexi Schumacher scored a free throw. Elven scored from the side. Lexi hit a putback and Mia Anderson hit a 3. Kylie Schumacher then scored on an inbounds play to make it 49-13.
Liberty scored 2 free throws then Kylie Schumacher and Ellie Nuxoll each scored to make it 53-15. A Liberty free throw made it 53-16 after 3 quarters. There is no running clock rule at State.
Shears scored a putback to open the fourth quarter. Liberty then put together 5 straight points before Elven scored twice on putbacks to make it 59-21.
Liberty scored their final point at the line with 3:26 left. Hanson then hit a 3 and Elven scored to close out the game.
Elven scored 20 to lead the Pirates with Lexi Schumacher scoring 16 and Kylie Schumacher 10. Hanson added 8 points with Shears scoring 5, Anderson 3 and Nuxoll 2.
Prairie dominated the boards 49-26 with Elven grabbing 14 and Kylie Schumacher 12 as each posted a double-double.
Kylie Schumacher, Lexi Schumacher, Hanson and Elven each had 5 steals while Kylie Schumacher, Shears, Aubree Rehder, Lexi Schumacher and Hanson each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 27 for 78 from the field, 35%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. Liberty Charter was 6 for 24 from the filed 25%, and 9 for 21 at the line, 43%.

Vs. Valley
In the semifinal against Valley it was a close game until a 21-5 run by the Pirates put them in control.
Sage Elven was all alone for this lay-up against Valley.Prairie scored off the opening tap as Lexi Schumacher fed the ball to Kylie Schumacher a lay-up.
Valley then took the lead with 2 free throws and a basket. Prairie tied it on a basket by Lexi Schumacher. Valley took back the lead with a 3 but Prairie answered with a pair of baskets by Elven to make it 8-7.
Valley scored to retake the lead but that was their final lead of the game. Kylie Schumacher scored a lay-up to put Prairie back on top and Elven added a lay-up. Valley tied it with a 3 at 12-12 with 2:40 left in the first quarter.
Prairie then closed out the first quarter with 2 free throws by Lexi Schumacher and a putback by Kylie Schumacher for a 16-12 lead.
Prairie then scored the first 6 of the second quarter on a basket each by Lexi Schumacher, Kylie Schumacher and Anderson. Valley scored to break the drought but Kylie Schumacher answered with a lay-up. After a 3 by Valley, Prairie scored 9 straight points to complete the aforementioned 21-5 run. Kylie Schumacher scored a lay-up. Elven scored after a steal then added a putback. Elven made the first of 2 free throws and then Kylie Schumacher rebounded the second one and scored to make it 33-17.
Valley scored 2 free throws and a basket to cut the lead to 12 but Hanson scored after a steal. A 3 by Valley was answered by a basket by Anderson to make it 37-24 at the half.
Valley scored to open the second half then Prairie got a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher. Lexi followed that with a 3 and Elven scored a putback to make it 44-26. Valley scored a pair of baskets that bracketed a lay-up by Kylie Schumacher. Prairie then scored 9 straight to take a 53-30 lead. Elven and Kylie Schumacher each made the second of 2 free throws. Elven then scored a lay-up. Lexi Schumacher made a free throw and then scored on a full-court drive. Valley scored to end the quarter with Prairie up 53-32.
Shears opened the fourth quarter scoring with a  free throw and Valley answered with a free throws. Prairie then scored 10 straight points as Lexi Schumacher sank a pair of 3’s and Kylie Schumacher scored 2 lay-ups to make it 64-33 with 3:05 to play.
Valley scored 5 straight points then Lexi Schumacher sank another 3. After a Valley basket, Anderson closed out the game with a basket.
Lexi Schumacher led the scoring with 23 points while Kylie Schumacher scored 21. Elven had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Anderson scored 6 with Hanson scoring 2 and Shears 1.
Prairie had a 34-29 edge on the boards.
Lexi Schumacher and Anderson each had 5 steals while Shears and Kylie Schumacher had 4 each. Shears, Nuxoll, Elven and Hanson each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 29 for 61 from the field, 48%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%. Valley was 15 for 42 from the field, 36%, and 6 for 9 at the line, 67%.

Vs. Oakley
The championship game against Oakley started well as Prairie scored the first 4 points on a basket each by Lexi Schumacher and Shears. However Oakley then scored 9 straight points and never trailed again.
Kylie Schumacher broke the Oakley run with a putback. Oakley then scored 4 more before Shears ended the first quarter with a lay-up on an inbounds play. Prairie trailed 8-13 after 1. Lexi Schumacher goes for a lay-up in the championship game against Oakley. Also shown is Sage Elven.
Oakley scored the first 4 points of the second quarter but Prairie answered with a 7-2 run that cut the deficit to 4. Kylie Schumacher scored on an inbounds play then Lexi Schumacher hit a 4. After an Oakley basket, Elven scored a lay-up to make it 15-19.
Oakley then outscored Prairie 2-6 the rest of the half for a 17-25 halftime lead.
In the second half it seemed like every time Prairie would get a rally going, Oakley’s Dakota Wadsworth would make a 3-pointer to blunt the rally.
Elven started the second half with 2 free throws then Hanson picked up her third foul. After a 3 by Wadsworth, Hanson picked up her fourth foul and went to the bench with Anderson and Nadia Cash picking up her playing time.
Kylie Schumacher made 2 free throws and a lay-up to cut the deficit to 5 but Wadsworth answered with 2 free throws. Lexi Schumacher scored 2 free throws but Oakley answered with a free throw. After a putback by Kylie Schumacher cut the deficit to 4 at 27-31, Oakly scored a free throw and a basket to lead by 7.
Lexi Schumacher made 2 free throws to cut the deficit to 5 but Oakley answered with a 3 with just 3 seconds left in the quarter. Prairie inbounded and Lexi Schumacher hit a 3 quarter court 3 as the buzzer sounded to make it 32-37 after 3.
Wadsworth opened the fourth quarter with a 3 but Prairie responded with a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher. On the ensuing inbounds by Oakley, Cash stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to cut the lead to 36-40.
Oakley scored a free throw and Lexi Schumacher worked her way to a 3-pointer to but the lead to 2. Wadsworth answered with a 3 but Prairie came back with a putback by Kylie Schumacher, Cash then stole the ball again and that led to a lay-up by Kylie Schumacher that cut the lead to 43-44 with 5:40 to play.
Oakley scored a free throw but Lexi Schumacher then tied it with a 3 from the top of the key. Oakley answered a 3 by Taylin Beck. Soon after Elven was whistled for her fifth foul. On the ensuing possession Wadsworth hit another 3 and just like that Prairie was down 6.
Shears drove for a lay-up but Oakley answered with a lay-up by Wadsworth. Lexi Schumacher scored on a drive to make it 50-54 with 2:10 left.
Wadsworth made 2 free throws to put Oakley back up by 6. Kylie Schumacher made the first of two free throws but then they wound up fouling Wadsworth against and she made both free throws again. Oakley added 2 more free throws and a basket to push the final margin to 11.
Lexi Schumacher led the Pirates with 22 points while Kylie Schumacher scored 15. Shears and Elven each scored 6 and Cash scored 2.
Wadsworth had 31 for the Hornets.
Oakley had the rebounding edge at 25-36 due to a 12-23 advantage in the first half when it seemed like they grabbed every rebound. Elven and Kylie Schumacher each had 7 rebounds to lead the Pirates while Adelyn Masada had 16 for Oakley.
Elven and Kylie Schumacher had 3 steals each while Hanson, Shears and Kylie Schumacher had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 19 for 49 from the field, 39%, and 9 for 11 at the line, 82%. Oakley was 21 for 49 from the field, 43%, and 13 for 16 at the line, 81%.
Prairie finishes the season with a record of 22-3 with 2 of those 3 losses coming to Oakley.
