To the Editor,
Perhaps their platform has changed, but I thought the Idaho Republican Party proudly purports for less government overreach into the lives of Idaho citizens. Right? Isn’t that the oft stated platitude? If anyone has been following recent legislative action two articles in the March 12th Lewiston Tribune, show that our legislators are violating their creed. House Bill 822, now headed to a Senate committee, aims to require, under penalty of a $100,000 fine, that doctors and educators notify the parents of a child demonstrating “social transition” in ways such as appearing in dress or by name that doesn’t correspond to the child’s sex. The second Tribune article was about a bill that has cleared the House and is now before the Senate. This bill requires schools to observe a moment of silence at the beginning of each school day. Really? And will there soon be another bill that requires the saying of “Amen” at the end of each day? These two legislative doozies are nothing but blatant government intrusion. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn of bills requiring notification to authorities when someone picks their nose. Or perhaps a bill requiring the wearing of matched shoes. I ask our representatives in the Idaho legislature to stop spending time and our money to create such petty, insulting legislation. Instead do the hard work of making progress on Idaho’s deeply pressing needs. Frances Conklin Cottonwood
