Pirates lose season openerThe Prairie baseball team lost their season opener 1-15 against Clearwater Valley at Kooskia Friday, March 15.
The Pirates were limited to just 3 hits in the game, a single each by Phil Schwartz, Chris Schumacher and Devin Schultz.
They scored their only run in the fourth inning. Jake Quintal drew a leadoff walk. Collin Ray then hit the ball toward second and reached on an error. Schumacher grounded to short, forcing Ray at second with Quintal going to third. Prairie then executed a delayed double steal. Schumacher took off for second with the throw going to second. Quintal took off from third as soon as the throw was made and scored while Schumacher beat the throw at second.
Prairie pitcher Noah Behler, their best pitcher last season, wasn’t sharp in the opener.  C.V.’s first 3 hitters all singled on the only strikes each one saw. They all came around to score as the Rams put up 5 first innings singles while picking up a pair of free passes in a hit batsman and a walk.
The Rams added 2 more in the second on 3 more hits and a hit batsman.
The Rams added another 4 runs in the third inning on just 2 hits with 2 walks and a hit batsman.
Behler hit the pitch limit after 3 inning and Schwartz took over on the mound. He faced 4 batters and couldn’t get any outs, giving up 2 hits and 2 walks. Levi McElroy then went to the mound and gave up a single before getting a sacrifice fly and a strikeout. He then struggled to find the strike zone as he walked 4 straight batters. Jake Quintal then took over on the mound to get the final out on a forceout.
