Prairie HOSA students do very well at State
By Liz McLeod
Students from Prairie High School made an impressive showing at the recent state HOSA – Future Health Professionals conference held in Boise, earning top honors across multiple competitive events and bringing pride back to their school and community.
The Medical Reserve Corps team of Ella McLeod, Ryan Stewart, and Gabe DeCaria earned 1st place, demonstrating exceptional knowledge, teamwork, and preparedness in bridging the gap between medical professionals and the community. Their project helped create new emergency buckets for our release-time classrooms, trained over 20 new EMTs, and organized a coat-and-boot drive to help children in our community.
Another standout performance came from the Health Education team—Zoey Behler, Nadia Cash, Halee Rowland, Erica Schlader, and Beka Schumacher—who also captured 1st place. Their success highlighted strong communication skills and a deep understanding of community health education.  Team members traveled to the elementary school, where they taught early elementary students about the importance of hand and oral hygiene and the value of exercise in their daily lives.  They also organized five health professionals from our community to complete a health career exploration for the students in third through sixth grade.
Prairie High School students also excelled in individual events. In Clinical Specialty, Lillianne Lustig earned 2nd place for her prosthetics project, while Lillian Rehder secured 3rd place for her physical therapy project. Bailey Key contributed to the school’s success with a 4th-place finish in a project focused on the medical assistant field.
Additional honors included Alaina DeCaria, who placed 8th in the state in Medical Spelling, and Kylee Riggers, who earned 5th place statewide for her Healthy Living project.
A historic milestone was also achieved at this year’s conference. Lillianne Lustig was named the first-ever state representative to Idaho HOSA from Prairie High School, marking a significant achievement for both the student and the school’s HOSA program.
The students’ accomplishments reflect months of preparation, dedication, and passion for healthcare careers. Prairie High School’s strong performance at the state level underscores the growing impact of its HOSA chapter and its commitment to developing future healthcare leaders.
