Pirates win 1 of 2 The Prairie Baseball team started the season by splitting their first two games. They won 14-5 at Pomeroy on Tuesday, March 18, in 8 innings. On Thursday, March 20, they lost 10-20 against Clearwater Valley at Kooskia. At Pomeroy In the opener at Pomeroy there were a couple of lead changes with Pomeroy tying the game in the bottom of the 6th before Prairie exploded for 9 runs in the top of the 8th to win it.In the top of the first Phil Schwartz led off by hitting a pop fly single behind second base. Schwartz advanced to second on an error and to third on a wild pitch. After an out, Carter Shears drew a walk. Shears stole second then Jake Quintal groundout out to short with Schwartz scoring and Shears advancing to third. Devon Poxleitner was hit by a pitch and Noah Geis went in as a courtesy runner. Chris Schumacher walked to load the bases but a strikeout ended the inning. Poxleitner got 2 quick outs on a line out to right and a strikeout. After a walk, he ended the inning with another strikeout. In the top of the second Prairie got 2 quick outs then Schwartz got his second hit of the game with a double to center. Levi McElroy walked but Shears then grounded out to second to end the inning. Pomeroy took their first lead in the bottom of the second. A walk, 2 singles and another walk tied the game. Another walk gave Pomeroy the lead. Poxleitner then got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts. Prairie tied it in the top of the third. Jake Quintal walked to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, Schumacher was hit by a pitch. After another strikeout, Max Rehder walked to load the bases. Collin Ray then walked to force Quintal to the plate with the tying run. In the bottom of the third Schwartz went to the mound and gave up a leadoff single then got a fly out and 2 strikeouts to get out of the inning. In the fourth Prairie had only a 2 out walk by Jake Quintal as they were unable to score. In the bottom of the inning Schwartz gave up a leadoff walk then got a strikeout. The next batter hit a pop up to McElroy at short who threw to Ray at first to double off the runner and end the inning. Prairie had a 2-out rally in the top of the fifth. After 2 strikeouts, Rehder singled to left. Ray followed with a bunt single. Schwartz then singled to right to score Rehder. A balk by the pitcher scored Ray from third to make it 4-2 before a strikeout ended the inning. In the bottom of the fifth Schwartz ran into trouble The leadoff hitter reached on an error and then stole second. After a strikeout, the runner stole third as Schwartz was giving up a walk. The runner on first stole second and a single then scored both runners to tie the game. McElroy then went to the mound and gave up a walk. After a strikeout, consecutive wild pitches led to the go-ahead run for Pomeroy as they took a 4-5 lead. In the top of the sixth Shears and Jake Quintal started the inning by walking. A sacrifice by Poxleitner moved both runs up. A sacrifice by Schumacher scored Shears to tie the game at 5-5. McElroy set the side down in order in the bottom of the sixth. Rehder led off the seventh with a walk but a strikeout and a double play ended the inning. In the bottom of the seventh McElroy struck out the first hitter but hit the second. He then picked off the baserunner for the second out and got a groundout to short to end the inning. Pomeroy sent a new pitcher to the mound for the eighth and he walked both McElroy and Shears to start the inning. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third. Jake Quintal then singled to left to score both runners. After Quintal stole second, Poxleitner singled to center to score Quintal. Schumacher then singled to center with Poxleitner advancing to third. Kade Quintal singled to right to score Poxleitner. After a strikeout, Schumacher stole third and Kade Quintal advanced to second on an error. Schumacher then scored on a squeeze bunt by Ray. Schwartz singled to score Quintal making it 11-5. McElroy was hit by a pitch. Shears then singled to center to score Schwartz with McElroy making it to third. McElroy then scored on a balk to make it 14-5 before the inning ended on a ground out. McElroy struck out the lead off hitter in the bottom of the eighth then gave way to Jake Quintal. Quintal walked the first batter he faced then ended the game with a pop up to himself and a strikeout. Prairie had 11 hits in the game led by Schwartz who had 3 singles and a double and 2 RBI. Ray and Jake Quintal each had a single and 2 RBI. Shears, Poxleitner, Schumacher and Kade Quintal each had a single and an RBI. Rehder had a single. Poxleitner pitched 2 innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks. Schwartz pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up 3 runs on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. McElroy pitched 3 innings and gave up no runs on no hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. He also picked up the win. C.V., Prairie started well and scored in 5 of the 6 innings but C.V.
scored in each of the 6 innings and a 6 run second inning put them in
control.![]() In the top of the first Schwartz beat out an infield hit and then McElroy followed with a home run to straightaway center for a quick 2-0 lead. Jake Quintal singled to second with no one covering first but Prairie had to settle for 2 runs in the first. McElroy started on the mound and hit the first batter and walked the second. Wild pitches moved both runners around the bases for runs despite McElroy striking out the next 3 hitters. Prairie took the lead again in the second. Rehder singled down the left field line with 1 out and stole second. He moved to third on a wild pitch. After an out, Schwartz walked and stole second. Both runners scored on McElroy’s single to right to give Prairie a 4-2 lead. Things fell apart for McElroy in the bottom of the second as he allowed the first 5 runners to all reach base on a single, 2 hit batsmen, a walk and a passed ball third strike. He was then replaced on the mound by Schwartz who gave up an infield single before getting an out on a fly to left. An error allowed 2 more runs to score and a single knocked in another run as C.V. scored 6 to take a 4-8 lead. Prairie got back within 2 in the top of the third. Jake Quintal was hit by the first pitch of the inning. After a fly ball out, Schumacher beat out a bunt single. Kade Quintal singled to right to load the bases. After a second out Ray was hit by a pitch to force home Jake Quintal with a run. Schumacher attempted to steal home and was given the run as the pitcher was called for a balk. That made it 6-8. C.V. added 3 more runs in the bottom of the third on 3 singles and 2 errors. That gave them a 6-11 lead. In the fourth inning McElroy received a 1-out walk. He went to second on a wild pitch. Shears grounded to third and C.V. made a play on McElroy for the out on a fielder’s choice. A fly ball out ended the inning. C.V. added 2 more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A hit batsman and a single started the inning. After a popup to Schwartz on the mound, he gave up a walk and was lifted in favor of Poxleitner. A passed ball scored a run. After a strikeout, a hit batsman and a walk forced in another run to make it 6-13. Prairie got back in the scoring column in the fifth as Schumacher reached on a 1 out error and Kade Quintal followed with a walk. After a second out, Ray singled to center to score Schumacher. Schwartz singled to right to score Quintal and make it 8-13. In the bottom of the fifth C.V. added 3 runs on an error, 2 walks and a single to make it 8-16. C.V. changed pitchers in the sixth and Shears greeted the new pitcher with a single to left. After an out, Poxleitner reached on an error. Noah Geis went in as a courtesy runner. Schumacher doubled to right to score Shears with Geis moving to third. Geis tried to score on a passed ball but was put out at the plate. A pair of wild pitches scored Schumacher to make it 10-16. In the bottom of the sixth Poxleitner was unable to get an out as C.V. scored 4 runs to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. A walk, hit batsman, 2 more walks and a walk-off 2-run single ended the game. Prairie had 11 hits led by McElroy who had a homer and a single and 4 RBI. Schumacher had a double and a single and an RBI. Schwartz had 2 singles and an RBI. Ray had a single and an RBI and Shears, Jake Quintal, Kade Quintal and Rehder each had a single. McElroy gave up 6 runs on 1 hit with 3 strikeouts, 2 walks and 3 hit batsmen in 1 inning. Schwartz gave up 7 runs on 6 hits with no strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 hit batsman in 2 1/3 innings. Poxleitner gave up 7 runs on 1 hit with 2 strikeouts, 6 walks and 2 hit batsmen in 1 2/3 innings. Prairie is now 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play. Prairie 222 022—10 11 5 C.
