Pirates win twice
The Prairie Pirates won a pair of league road games last week. On Tuesday, March 24, they traveled to Genesee and won 13-6. On Thursday, March 26, they traveled to Lewiston and won a no-hit shutout against Lapwai, 11-0.
At Genesee
On a drizzly day at Genesee, the Pirates picked up their first league win of the season. Chris Schumacher scores on a head first slide for Prairie's first run at Genesee.
It took awhile before the Pirates offense got going as they were held scoreless through the first 4 innings. In the first Devon Poxleitner reached with 2 outs when he was hit by a pitch and Kade Quintal walked. A strikeout ended the inning.
Quintal started the game on the mound for the Pirates and gave up a pair of first inning singles that led to a run for the Bulldogs.
In the second inning, Prairie again had 2 outs before getting a baserunner when Chase VonBargen was hit by a pitch.
Quintal struck out the side in the bottom of the second.
For the third straight inning Prairie had 2 outs before getting a baserunner as Poxleitner reached on catcher’s interference.
In the bottom of the third, Genesee added 2 more runs for a 0-3 lead on 3 singles and a walk.
Prairie got their first hit of the game in the fourth when Austin Labrum led off with a single. After 2 outs, a walk by VonBargen and an infield single by Max Rehder loaded the bases. However another out left them stranded.
Quintal gave up just a 2 out walk in the bottom of the fourth.
Prairie finally got on the board in the fifth. Chris Schumacher led off with an infield single. Poxleitner followed with a walk. Schumacher scored Prairie’s first run on a wild pitch. Quintal followed with a walk. Genesee then changed pitchers and got an out. Cooper Riener then made a second out but his groundout to third scored Levi Gehring, who was courtesy running for Poxleitner. Quintal then scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 3-3.
Genesee took back the lead in the fourth with a 1 out walk. The runner went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to make it 3-4. Chris Schumacher took over on the mound to get the third out as Quintal hit the early season pitch count total.
Prairie took their first lead in the fifth. Levi McElroy led off with a walk and went to second on a balk. Schumacher walked and Genesee changed pitchers again. McElroy scored on a wild pitch. Poxleitner walked and Gehring went in to run again. Schumacher scored on a wild pitch. Quintal and Labrum both walked to load the bases. Gehring scored to make it 6-4 when a pickoff attempt went into left field. Quintal was forced out at third but Isaiah Warren walked to reload the bases. A pair of outs ended the inning with the score still at 6-4.
Genesee was able to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff walk was forced a second. An error followed. The lead runner was then forced at third. A 2-run triple to right tied the score before a strikeout ended the inning.
By the top of the seventh the dirt infield was a quagmire and contributed to Prairie’s 7-run outburst. McElroy led off with a walk. Schumacher followed with a walk. McElroy scored on an errant pickoff attempt with Schumacher going to third. After an out, Quintal singled to score Schumacher. Labrum walked and Cooper Riener was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Quintal and advanced the other 2 runners. A passed ball scored Labrum with Riener going to third. After a second out, VonBargen walked. Riener scored on an error. Max Rehder walked. VonBargen scored on an error. McElroy walked and Schumacher singled to score Rehder and make it 13-6.
In the bottom of the 7th coach Dustin Behler had his infielders play in on the grass just so they would have good footing to make a play as the infield dirt was totally saturated by that time. Genesee led off with a single. A hit batsman and an error loaded the bases. Schumacher recorded a strikeout for the first out. The game ended as Genesee hit back to back grounders to Riener at third who threw home each time for a forceout.
Prairie had 5 hits in the game. Schumacher had 2 singles and an RBI. Quintal, Labrum and Rehder each had a single.
Quintal gave up 4 runs on 5 hits with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks in 4 2/3 innings. Schumacher gave up 2 runs on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts, 1 walk and 1 hit batsman in 2 1/3 innings.

Vs. Lapwai at Lewiston
Three pitchers combined to toss a no-hit shutout against Lapwai.
Prairie had a pair of 2-out walks but no runs in the first. Poxleitner and Quintal drew the walks.
Poxleitner started on the mound and gave up just  a 1-out walk to Lapwai in the bottom of the first.
Prairie got on the scoreboard in the second. Riener led off the inning with a single to left. An error moved him to second. After a strikeout, Riener stole third. After a second out, Riener stole third to make it 1-0.
In the second inning Poxleitner struck out 3 and gave up a 2-out hit batsman.
In the third McElroy led off with a double and Schumacher was hit by a pitch. A balk moved the runners to second and third. After a strikeout, Quintal walked to load the bases. McElroy scored on a wild pitch. Labrum then grounded out to first, scoring Schumacher. Quintal then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
The only Lapwai baserunner in the bottom of the third came on an error as Poxleitner added  2 more strikeouts.
In the fourth, Gehring reached on a dropped fly ball and then stole second. With 2 outs, Schumacher reached on an error with Gehring moving to third. Poxleitner singled to center to score Gehring. Quintal walked to load the bases. Schumacher and Poxleitner then both wound up scoring on a wild pitch to make it 7-0.
In the bottom of the inning Poxleitner game up a leadoff walk. A forceout and 2 strikeouts got him out of the inning.
Riener had a leadoff single in the fifth and advanced to second on a balk. He wound up stranded at second.
In the bottom of the fifth the only baserunner was a 2-out hit batsman.
In the sixth Prairie loaded the bases with 2 outs but couldn’t score. Poxleitner reached on an error. Quintal singled and Labrum was hit by a pitch. A groundout then ended the inning.
Riener went in to pitch in the bottom of the sixth. He wound up with 4 strikeouts. On the second strikeout the hitter swung at a pitch in the dirt and wound up reaching first as the ball got past the catcher.
In the seventh John Seubert led off with a single and stole second he scored on Warren’s double to center. A double play followed. McElroy reached on a walk and stole second. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Poxleitner’s single to left. Quintal doubled to center to scored both Poxleitner and Schumacher and make it 11-0.
Labrum pitched the bottom of the second and struck out the side in the only 1-2-3 inning for Pirate pitchers. That completed the combined no-hitter.
Prairie had 9 hits in the game. Quintal had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Poxleitner had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Riener had 2 singles. Warren had a double and an RBI. McElroy had a double. Seubert had a single.
Poxleitner gave up no run and no hits in 5 innings with 9 strikeouts, 2 walks and 2 hit batsmen. Riener had 4 strikeouts in 1 inning with no hits and no walks. Labrum gave up no runs and no hits with 3 strikeouts in 1 inning.
Prairie is now 3-2 on the season and 2-2 in league play.
