Lexi Schumacher named player of the year
Lexi Schumacher was selected as the 2024-25 2A player of the year by the Idaho Statesman and her teammate Kylie Schumacher was selected to the All-State 2nd Team.
This is the writeup from the Statesman on Lexi: The pick: A first-team selection last year, the 5-7 senior point guard ends her career with the top award after leading the Pirates to a second-place finish at state. She proved a nightmare on both ends of the court, averaging 18.8 points, 2.9 assists and 3.8 steals per game.
Coach’s comment: “Lexi was great at leading the floor and all heart,” Prairie coach Lori Mader said. “... She was a dream kid to coach.” What others are saying: “If you give her room to shoot, she’ll kill you. And if you put pressure on her, she’ll take it to the rim,” Oakley coach Kristin Jones said. “Defensively, she is disruptive and creates a lot of scoring opportunities because of it.” What’s next: She is weighing her college options.

Lexi Schumacher goes for a lay-up against Oakley in the state championship game.

Sydney Shears named KLEW-TV Athlete of the Week
Prairie junior Sydney Shears has a 4.0 GPA and participates in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. She was named as last week’s KLEW-TV Athlete of the week. The write-up on the KLEW website follows:
Shears started with track and field in junior high, but it was not love at first sight.
"I started track in junior high, and I’m going to be completely honest, it was not my favorite in junior high,” Shears said.
“Then my high school coaches, you could just tell how much they cared and loved the sport," Shears said.
Shears has a goal in mind this track season.
"So short-term goal I’d like to keep chipping away at my 800 times see if I can keep lowering that,” Shears said.
“You know if the world went perfect and everything went great just bring home some gold at state that would be an awesome goal," Shears said.
She's already a triple sport athlete but finds skills from one sport to help her in the others.
"Doing what I can and working toward being the best I can at track and track also pays back in volleyball and basketball with the ability to run and jump," Shears said.
Shears is a busy student, but she gets help from her teachers.
"Our teachers do a good job at helping out with that they kind of understand and know how to help me out with that,” Shears said.
“They give me time, but they also hold the standard of you know you’re going to get it done, and you’re going to do a good job," Shears said.

Sydney Shears, left, makes a pass on her way to a first place finish in the 800 at Kamiah this past Saturday.
