To the Library and Beyond
This week at the library we’ve enjoyed the warmer, beautiful sunny spring weather in our area! It should continue to get nicer as we go through this month and into May.
Joan’s book review this week is titled, “The UFO Experience – A Scientific Inquiry”.  This is a book published in 1972 by a Harvard and Northwestern University astronomer, who investigates the topic of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).  Dr. Hynek developed a classification system for UFO sightings, which includes six classification levels.  He stresses the importance of accurate reporting of UFO encounters and a science-based approach to the study of UFOs.  In his classification system, the six levels are: nocturnal lights, daylight discs, radar-visual UFOs, and Close Encounters of the First, Second, and Third Kind.  Dr. Hynek describes and discusses these six levels in detail.  He also includes a chapter about the U. S. Air Force’s project Blue Book, a series of studies of UFOs in the late 1940s, the 1950s, and into the 1960s.  He became the astronomer consultant to Project Blue Book and acted as such for over 20 years.  In conclusion, he stresses the need for ongoing investigations of this topic.  He recommends transferring the UFO studies out of the Air Force and being given to “a civilian group of capable scientists from various disciplines…”.  This is a very interesting book, describing the studies of UFOs in the mid-latter part of the 20th century.
This week we want to mention our collection of Idaho/Pacific Northwest books. The library has two large bookcases of nonfiction books about our area, as well as a half case of ID/NW fiction. Some of these books are older, while some are recent.  Many of them have a lot of nice photos of Idaho and the Pacific Northwest. Many of them are written by ID or NW authors, so they have much local expertise. Please come on in and take a look at these!
