Pirates win 1 of 2
The Prairie baseball team won 1 of the 2 games played last week. On Tuesday, April 8, they played their first home game and beat Lapwai 20-5 in 3 innings. On Thursday, April 10, they hosted Kendrick and lost 3-17 in 5 innings. Finally, they were to play Troy Saturday, April 12 at Lewiston but the games were called off due to lack of umpires. They have been rescheduled to Tuesday, April 22 at 4 & 6 p.m. at Clearwater Field in Lewiston..
Vs. Lapwai
The game against Lapwai was not only Prairie’s first home game of the season, it was also their first league win of the season. Jake Quintal rounds second in his home run trot after hitting a 2-run homer against Lapwai. The ball landed on the corner of the K-1 building where you can see the roof drain behind him.
Jake Quintal started on the mound and gave up a 2 out single in the first. The runner was then caught stealing as catcher Phil Schwartz threw out the runner.
In the bottom of the first Levi McElroy got the offense going with a 1-out double to right center. A passed ball advanced him to third. Carter Shears drew a walk. Prairie then executed a delayed double steal with McElroy scoring and Shears going to second. Jake Quintal beat out and infield hit with Shears going to third. Quintal then stole second. Devon Poxleitner grounded out with Shears scoring on the play. Chris Schumacher doubled to right to score Quintal for a 3-0 lead.
In the second, Lapwai’s leadoff bater reached on an error. After a strikeouts, a groundout moved the runner to second and a wild pitch moved him to third. A flare of a single that dropped behind second scored the runner. Quintal then picked the runner off to end the inning.
Prairie scored 13 runs in the bottom of the second highlighted by a 2-run homer.
Collin Ray led off by reaching on an error. He stole second and scored on a single to center by Schwartz. Schwartz stole second and then stole third and scored on a passed ball. After an out, Shears was walked again and stole second. Jake Quintal was walked and both runners moved up on steals and Shears then scored on a wild pitch. Poxleitner’s fly ball to right was dropped for an error with Quintal scoring. Schumacher beat out an infield single. Kade Quintal then singled to right to score Poxleitner. Noah Geis walked to load the bases. Ray laid down a perfect bunt between the pitcher and third for a single that scored Schumacher. Schwartz beat out an infield hit with Kade Quintal scoring. Levi McElroy singled up the middle to score both Geis and Ray. Shears doubled to the wall in center to score both Schwartz and McElroy. Jake Quintal then homered over the fence in right center with his ball hitting the roof of the K-1 building. That made it 16-1.
In the top of the third Lapwai drew a leadoff walk but the runner was then forced at second on a comebacker to the mound. An errant pickoff allowed the runner to advance to second. Another error put runners on first and third and a stolen base made it second and third. After a strikeout, a walk loaded the bases. A triple to deep left center scored 3 runs and a wild pitch then scored the runner from third to make it 16-5. A strikeout ended the inning.
Rain had started in the top of the inning and intensified in the bottom of the inning. If Prairie could scored 4 runs it would make it a legal game. Oliver Van Houten led off the inning with a walk. Van Houten stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Ray singled to left to score VanHouten. Schwartz walked. Ray wound up stealing third. Schwartz then stole second. A balk scored Ray and Schwartz moved to third. McElroy doubled to left to score Schwartz. McElroy then stole third. After a second out, McElroy stole home with Quintal at the plate to put Prairie up by 15 runs. There was then some discussion between the coaches and umpire and even though the 15-run mercy rule wasn’t agreed on prior to the game with the rain intensifying it was agreed to use that rule to make it a legal game.
Prairie wound up with 14 hits in the game led by McElroy who had 2 doubles and a single and 3 RBI. Jake Quintal had a single and a homer and 2 RBI. Schumacher had a double and a single and an RBI. Schwartz and Ray each had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Shears had a double and 2 Rbi and Kade Quintal had a single and an RBI. Poxleitner had 2 RBI on a groundout and sacrifice fly.
Jake Quintal pitched all 3 innings and allowed 5 runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Vs. Kendrick
In the game against Kendrick, Prairie led after 3 innings then came an ugly top of the fourth where Kendrick scored 12 runs and went on to end the game after 5 innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
Phil Schwartz steals second against Kendrick.McElroy started on the mound and sailed through the top of the first on 13 pitches with 2 strikeouts and a groundout to first.
Schwartz led off the bottom of the first with an infield single. McElroy followed with a single. After an out Jake Quintal singled to load the bases. Schwartz was forced out at the plate on a comebacker to the mound. Schumacher then walked to force home McElroy with the first run of the game. Quintal wound up scoring on a passed ball to make it 2-0.
Kendrick led off the second inning with a triple to the fence in center. A wild pitch scored the run then McElroy got out of the inning with 3 strikeouts.
In the bottom of the second Schwartz hit a 1-out single to left and stole second. McElroy singled to left to score Schwartz and an error in left allowed him to got to second. The inning ended on a pair of groundouts to second.
McElroy got a quick pair of outs in the third then walked consecutive hitters. Passed balls enable a run to score and make it 3-2 before a fly ball to center ended the inning.
Prairie went down in order in the bottom of the third but still led 3-2.
Everything fell apart in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff single to left things unraveled. A sacrifice bunt wound up allowing the runner on first to score and tie the game. A dropped fly ball in right and a walk loaded the bases. A groundout scored the go-ahead run. Another groundout made it 3-5. 2 walks loaded the bases and then another dropped fly ball allowed 3 runs to score. A hit batsman and an error loaded the bases. A steal of home, a 2-run double, a single, a walk and another error led to a 3-14 deficit. McElroy was then lifted with Schumacher going to the mound. A hitter reached on an error before the inning ended on a pop-up to first.
Prairie made 2 outs before Schwartz singled to right. McElroy followed with a walk then Kendrick changed pitchers. A strikeout followed to end the inning.
Schumacher gave up 3 runs in the top of the fifth on 3 singles and 2 walks.
Prairie went down in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Schwartz had 3 of Prairies 6 hits, all of them singles. McElroy had 2 singles and an RBI and Jake Quintal had a single. Schumacher had an RBI.
McElroy pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed 14 runs on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts, 6 walks and a hit batsman. Schumacher pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks.
Prairie is now 2-4 overall and 1-4 in league play.
