To the Library and Beyond
It’s been another chilly week, with some new snow on the Butte and surrounding mountains!  Thus, it’s a great week to spend some time in the library!
Joan’s book review for this week is titled, “Scenic Driving Idaho”.  This book, published in 1998, is a tour guide of 27 scenic drives throughout the state of Idaho.  The first routes are located in southeast Idaho, and they proceed to the southwest part of the state and finish in northern Idaho.  For each route, the author describes the endpoints, as well as special attractions, highway numbers, the travel season, camping locations, services, and nearby attractions.  A lot of historical information is included, and some photos of buildings, scenery, and maps of the routes.  This is a very nice guidebook for vehicular travelers in Idaho.
Another one of Joan’s book reviews is “The Story of Edgar Cayce”.  This is a biography of Edgar Cayce, who was a famous clairvoyant during the early part of the 20th century.  He was born in 1877, and his powers as a clairvoyant were discovered when he was a boy.  He did clairvoyant readings of many people for 43 years.  These “readings” consisted of a visit by a stranger to Edgar, during which he went to sleep.  When asleep, he dictated a medical diagnosis for the visitor, as well as healing methods, medications, etc.  Most of his readings were for medical patients and were amazing, as Edgar had no education beyond middle school.  The fact that he gave the diagnoses and cures using medical language while asleep was unheard of.  Edgar also did other readings for people interested in other topics.  In all, he gave more than 30,000 readings and devoted his life to this work.  It’s a great biography and very interesting reading.
Prairie Community Library is currently doing an inventory of all of our library’s holdings.  We are being assisted by two young volunteers, Michelle and Kristina.  They are given lists of some of our books, after which they locate these books on our shelves. If a book cannot be located, then we make corrections to our computer book database. This inventory is an extensive undertaking and will take several months to complete.  Our current library holdings are between 17,500 and 18,000 books, so there’s plenty to look at, and many great books available for checking out!  In addition, we carry the local newspapers and also have two computers and public WiFi available for public use. We’d love to see you come in and avail yourself of these services!
