The school board held their April meeting Monday, April 20. At that meeting they approved rehiring Julie Schumacher as head coach for high school volleyball. They also approved hiring Lisa Riener as the high school co-athletic director. She was already a co-athletic director with this expanding her role to take on some of the duties Jeff Martin had. Meanwhile Martin was hired as the junior high athletic director, replacing Eric Coffelt. The board approved issuing contracts with a 0% salary increase. The 0% salary increase is due to the cutback in state funding this year. They also voted to adopt the gate fee increase for high school sports to match what was suggested by the White Pine League. The fee increase was proposed to help meet the increasing costs of officials. There was discussion on the baseball field and its fence issues. Board member Shawn Kaschmitter took photos of some of the issues. Superintendent Jon Rehder will contact a couple of fencing businesses to get some quotes and present them to the board. There were two bids presented for the high school roof project. This would fix the main gym roof, the flat roof near the gym and the roof over the front entryway. The bid from Concept Construction LLC of Winchester for $115,400 was approved. The other bid was from ICON of Spokane and was slightly higher. Rehder said Concept Construction has worked with the district before and does excellent work. Policy 3050 was discussed and approved with the indicated changes. It dealt with attendance issues and previously required sending a letter through the mail. With increasing postage costs plus the fact that, according to high school principal Matt Elven, they get better response from emails, it was decided to strike the portion requiring sending a letter by mail. Policy 3085P was also approved with the changes suggested by Jon Rehder and the Idaho School Board Association at the last meeting. Prior to the action item portion of the meeting Kane McIntire and Dylan Klapprich reported on the FFA state conference April 1-4 and thanked the board and staff for supporting their group. Liz McLeod was present to report on HOSA’s state conference and that they did very well at state with 11 students going to Indianapolis for the national conference. She also thanked the board and staff for their support. In administrative reports Elven said they have received several winter sport parent and student surveys back and they gave them some additional items they need to address in the preseason parent meetings. Most were positive. He also reported on the Idaho County Commissioners holding their April 7 meeting at the school. It went very well and Elven felt this may be something they would want to do again. The SAT was held April 8 in the Spirit Center. Senior project presentations were held April 14. There will be some more to be presented in front of the school board at the May meeting that weren’t quite ready for the April 14 presentations. ISAT testing was to start Tuesday April 21 and will continue until May 1. Knowledge Bowl’s final competition is set for April 27 and will also serve as senior night. LCSC Wellness and Health Screening Fair is set for April 28. The Prom is set for May 2. Rehder reported parent/teacher conferences went well with 200 of 218 students represented. ISAT’s will start April 23 for grades 3-6 and will run through May 20. IRI testing for grades K-3 will start May 4. In his facilities report Rehder said the new library and K-1 hallway got new carpeting over spring break. Books are being moved to the new library and they plan to move the rest this Friday when there is no school. Rick Forsmann plans to update some of the water pipes at the high school this summer. Some leaks in the high school science and English classroom upstairs occurred during the heavy rains last week. They will get together with Andrew Miller and see what needs to be done. There was also some window seals at the Auxiliary Gym that will need re-caulked. In his superintendent’s report Rehder noted there are several recognition days that have taken place and others coming up. Paraprofessional Appreciation Day and National School Librarian Day took place during Spring Break and those individuals were honored on March 26. Administrative Professionals Week is April 20-24. School Bus Drive Appreciation Day is April 28. School Lunch Hero Day is May 1. Principal Appreciation Day is also on May 1. He and Carly Behler attended the Legislative Roadshow on April 14. The legislature did away with the Continuous Improvement Plan requirement and is now requiring a Strategic Performance Plan. The meeting adjourned at 8:08 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Monday, May 18 at 7 p.m. |
