School Board meets The school board held their April meeting Monday, April 21 and approved Garrett Beckman for hire for the open PE position. They accepted resignations from Kim Harman as PE teacher, Madison Shears as a paraprofessional and Erika Shears and Marlene Forsmann as junior high volleyball coaches. The annual $5,000 transfer from the general fund for track maintenance was approved. They also approved a 5% across the board salary increase depending on levy approval. Liz McLeod informed the board they had several HOSA students qualify for nationals in Nashville, TN in June and 5 of them are planning on going. Fundraising is ongoing to help cover their expenses. In the Jr./Sr. High School Principal’s report Matt Elven noted that 6 students attended the state FFA conference. Eric Coffelt’s PE class took a field trip to the Cottonwood Gun Club to experience trap shooting on April 4. Due to rescheduled softball and baseball games only 3 students were able to attend. The Mother-Daughter Tea was held at AFD Alley on April 6. The final Knowledge Bowl meet was held April 7 and the seniors were honored during the intermission after round 2. All the juniors took the new digitally formatted SAT test on April 9. Elven held a coaches meeting on April 9 to discuss club/AAU teams simultaneously during school sponsored varsity sports. The general consensus as a group was that we would not offer a club activity or season during a school sponsored season. Elven said you get students trying to compete in a school sport and a club sport at the same time and they don’t get any down time leading to exhaustion which also can lead to lower grades. Rick Forsmann worked on straightening the fence around the high school playfield last week and also worked on cleaning up the pathway in the high school dungeon. He also got the sump pump working again. ISATs are scheduled for April 21-29 for 7th, 8th and 9th ELA & Math and 8th and 11th grade science. Senior project presentations are scheduled for Wednesday April 23. 14 projects presentations will be given by 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. Jon Rehder reported they had 91% attendance for parent-teacher conferences at the Elementary School. Their ISATs start May 6 and continue through May 21 with makeups on May 22. Fifth graders completed hunter safety earlier this month. Earth Day is April 22 and Elementary students were to do a campus wide cleanup. In his facilities report Rehder noted the added parking area in the northwest corner of the track/football complex worked well during the 2 track meets last week with about 60 cars able to park there. They plan to paint the high school in June prior to the new window installation. Rick Forsmann plans on updating some of the water pipes at the high school this summer. In his superintendent’s report Rehder noted this week is Administrative Professionals Week. Denise Uhlenkott, Jennifer Riener and Lisa Hasselstrom are being honored.
