To the Library and Beyond
There is a meeting of the Board of Directors of Prairie Community Library, Inc. scheduled for Thursday 8 May at 10 AM in the Library.  Like us on Facebook.  Visit with Joan on Saturdays, 10 -3.
Compliments of Frances Conklin:  From the archives of the library:
When: April 1, 1985.  The newly formed Library Association asked Cottonwood City Council for permission to use the former basement council chambers as a library.
Who: Councilman Lee Uhling made motion to approve the request.  Councilman Walt Isaak seconded.  Motion was approved.  Ladd Arnoti was mayor.
Result: April 2025.  Forty continuous years of library service to residents living within Prairie School District 242.  (Ferdinand, Greencreek, Keuterville, Cottonwood areas).
How: Only possible to have reached this 40th milestone with the ongoing generous donations of time, labor, books, supplies, & funding from friends and neighbors of the library.
Thank you!  Shall we strive for another forty years?
Joan has reviewed the 1980 book, Ruffles On My Long-johns by Isabel Edwards.  “This is a fascinating tale of roughing it in a very low-populated location.”  Ms. Edwards related the adventures she and her husband experienced as they began a homestead in the Bella Coola area of coastal British Columbia in 1932.  The couple lived there nearly 50 years in an extremely remote location, several miles from the nearest road, and accessible only by trails.  The author explained the hardships they faced.  Her husband was a commercial fisherman during the summers, leaving the author alone with their pets and livestock at those times.  Ms. Edwards portrays the natural beauty of the area as well as the wildlife, farm chores, weather, and the isolation.
May is National Get Caught Reading Month.  Sunday 4 May is Star Wars Day – May the Fourth be with you!  Our statistics show that 2021 was a hallmark year; we served 2,075 visitors and loaned 2,479 items.  The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library strive to collect helpful data and use it to improve our services to our patrons.  “Volunteering is at the very core of being human.”
Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com.  “Volunteering helps us gain new and valuable skills and provides a sense of community.”  Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.  Thank you all!
