Pirates wins 1 of 4
The Prairie baseball team won 1 of their 4 games this past week. On Tuesday, April 28, they lost their final game of the regular season to C.V., 0-15, at Cottonwood. On Thursday, April 30, they hosted Genesee in a District play-in game and pulled out a wild 14-13 win. On Friday, May 1, they lost to Potlatch at Kendrick  2-6 in a District Tournament game. On Saturday, May 2, they lost to Kendrick 10-14 at Kendrick to finish fourth at District.
However they still have a chance to advance to State as they were ranked #4 in the final MaxPreps rankings and will travel to Meridian this Friday and Saturday to play District 3 champion North Star Charter. They will play a bet 2 out of 3 with the winner advancing to the state tournament May 14-15.
Vs. C.V.
Prior to the game Prairie honored their 8 seniors and their families. Seniors honored were Phil Schwartz, Chase VonBargen, Oliver vanHouten, Levi Gehring, Levi McElroy. Chris Schumacher, Max RehderLevi McElroy rounds first after hitting a single against C.V. and Patrick Schlader.
C.V. dominated the regular season finale at Cottonwood. They jumped on starter Kade Quintal for 5 runs in the first inning on 3 extra-base hits, a walk and an error. In the bottom of the first Levi McElroy had a 1 out single and Devon Poxleitner added a 2-out single but the inning ended with the runners still at first and second base.
In the second inning, C.V.’s first 4 runners reached on an error, bunt single, walk and a 2-run single. McElroy then went to the mound and got a strikeout then gave up 7 straight free passes on 3 walks and 4 hit batsmen before getting a pair of infield pop-ups to get out of the inning with the Pirates now trailing 0-13. Prairie’s only baserunner in the bottom of the inning was Patrick Schlader who reached on an error with 2 outs.
In the third C.V.’s first two batters reached on a walk and a hit batsman. McElroy then got a pair of strikeouts before giving up a 2-run single to make it 0-15. In the bottom of the inning the Pirates went down in order and the game was called on the 15-run mercy rule after 3.
Prairie had just 2 hits in the game, a single each by McElroy and Poxleitner.
Quintal gave up 9 runs in 1+ innings on 5 hits with 1 strikeout and 2 walks. McElroy gave up 6 runs in 2 innings on 1 hit with 4 walks and 5 hit batsmen.

Play-In vs. Genesee
At Cottonwood the Pirates and Genesee played a wild back and forth game to determine which team advance to the District finals at Kendrick.
Austin Labrum started on the mound for the Pirates and gave up 2 runs in the first inning on a single, 2 doubles and a hit by pitch. With 2 runners on base and only 1 out, he managed to get out of the inning with a strikeout and line-out. McElroy had a 1-out single to left in the bottom of the first. He scored on Poxleitner’s 2 out single to left. Prairie trailed 1-2 after 1 inning.
Labrum struck out the side in the top of the second. Labrum walked to lead off the bottom of the second and Phil Schwartz went in as courtesy runner. John Seubert reached on an error. Max Rehder walked to load the bases. Quintal singled to score Schwartz and tie the game. McElroy drew a walk to score Seubert and give Prairie their first lead. After an out, Poxleitner singled to center to score both Rehder and Quintal for a 5-2 lead.
In the third, Genesee started the inning with a double, error and a dropped third strike that scored a run. After an out, another dropped third strike scored another run as the batter was thrown out at first. Prairie got only a 1-out walk from Seubert in the bottom of the third as the score was now 5-4.
In the fourth Genesee got a 1-out single but Labrum picked him off at first then got out of the inning with a strikeout. In the bottom of the fourth McElroy drew a 1-out walk. Chris Schumacher reached on an error. A double by Poxleitner to left scored McElroy. After a second out, Schumacher scored on an errant pickoff attempt. Isaiah Warren then double to score Poxleitner and make it 8-4.
Genesee came back with 3 runs in the fifth on 4 straight singles to make it 8-7. Seubert led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and went to second on a passed ball. After an out, Quintal singled to right to score Seubert. Quintal went to second on the throw home. McElroy followed with an infield single as Quintal went to third. Schumacher walked to load the bases. After a second out, Levi Gehring walked to score Quintal and made it 10-7.
Labrum got 2 quick outs in the top of the sixth then game up a single. After a steal of second, another single scored the runner making it 10-8. Prairie got singles from Seubert and Rehder in the bottom of the sixth but was unable to score.
In the top of the seventh Labrum got a quick out then 2 errors and a single led to a run. A runner was thrown out trying to advance to third for the second out.  After hitting the next batter, Labrum was pulled and Warren went to the mound. He hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. The next batter hit a grand slam homer to give Genesee a 10-13 lead. A ground out ended the inning. In the bottom of the seventh Schumacher and Poxleitner both reached base on errors and Gehring was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring the winning run to the plate. After a strikeout, Labrum was walked to score Schumacher. Seubert reached on an error as Poxleitner scored. Schwartz went in as a pinch-runner for Labrum. Rehder singled with Gehring scoring the tying run. Schwartz then scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Prairie had 11 hits in the game led by Poxleitner who had a double and 2 singles and 4 RBI. Quintal had 2 singles and 2 RBI. McElroy and Rehder each had 2 singles and an RBI. Warren had a double and an RBI. Seubert had a single and an RBI.
Labrum pitch 6 2/3 innings and allowed 11 runs on 12 hits with 11 strikeouts, 2 hit batters and no walks. Warren pitch 1/3 of an inning and allowed 2 runs on 1 hit with a hit batsman.

Vs. Potlatch at District
The Pirates faced league champion Potlatch in the opening round of the District Tournament at Kendrick.
Kade Quintal slides into home with a run against Potlatch.Quintal drew a walk to lead off the game and moved to second on a passed ball. He went to third on a groundout and then was thrown out trying to score on a fielder’s choice. Quintal started on the mound for the Pirates and set the Loggers down in order in the bottom of the first.
Prairie went down in order in the second. Quintal gave up a single and hit a batter in the bottom of the inning but kept the Loggers off the scoreboard.
In the third, Quintal drew a 2-out walk but was forced at second to end the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Quintal hit the first two batters then got a comebacker and threw the lead runner out at third. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Quintal got out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout.
The Pirates went down in order in the fourth thanks to a couple of great catches by the Potlatch left fielder. That includes one made at the fence on a deep drive by Poxleitner. The Loggers got to Quintal in the bottom of the fourth with 2 doubles and a single that scored 2 runs.
The Pirates again went down in order in the fifth. The Loggers added 3 more runs in the bottom of the inning on a walks, hit batter, run scoring single, squeeze bunt that scored another run, a walk and a groundball that scored a run to make it 0-5.
Labrum led off the top of the sixth as he was hit by a pitch. Quintal walked and McElroy then doubled to right center to scored Labrum. Schumacher was intentionally walked to load the bases. Poxleitner then hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Quintal to make it 2-5. McElroy took over on the mound to start the bottom of the sixth. He hit the first batter who stole second and then was moved to third with a sacrifice bunt. A walk and stolen base followed. An error allowed the lead runner to score before McElroy got out of the inning with a strikeout and groundout.
Prairie faced a new pitch in the seventh and Seubert hit a 1-out single up the middle. After a second out, Labrum singled to right but Seubert was held at third. Quintal walked to load the bases. McElroy’s fly ball was caught in right to end the game.
Prairie had just 3 hits in the game. McElroy had a double and an RBI. Seubert and Labrum each had a single.
Quintal pitched 5 innings allowing 5 runs on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts, 4 hit batters and 3 walks. McElroy allowed 1 run in 1 inning on not hits with 1 strikeout, 1 hit batter and 1 walk.

Vs. Kendrick at District
In the game against Kendrick, Prairie fell behind by 10 runs, rallied back within 2 before losing by 4.
In the top of the first Prairie got a 2 out walk by Schumacher but that was it. Seubert started on the mound and the first 3 Kendrick hitters reached on a hit batsman, error and double. All 3 scored. Max Rehder battles the sun as he gets ready to make a catch against Kendrick at District.
In the second inning, Gehring was hit by a pitch and Seubert walked but 2 strikeouts ended the inning. In the bottom of the inning Kendrick added 2 more runs on a single and a triple and a wild pitch.
In the third, McElroy singled to right for Prairie’s first hit of the game. He was stranded at second after a stolen base. Kendrick added 5 more runs in the bottom of the inning. A 1-out triple led to a run on a groundout. 2 errors led to another run. After a run-scoring single, Seubert was lifted in favor of McElroy. A single and a double and a steal of home led to 2 more runs. A caught stealing at third ended the inning.
In the fourth Warren led off with a double to left center. Gehring and Seubert walked to load the bases. Kendrick changed pitchers and 2 more walks scored Warren and Gehring. Seubert scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Quintal to make it 3-10. A leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly made it 3-11.
In the fifth Poxleitner was walked to lead off the inning and Schwartz went in as courtesy runner. With 1 out, Gehring was walked. Kendrick changed pitchers again and after a wild pitch moved Schwartz to third and Gehring stole second, Seubert singled to right center to score both runners and make it 5-11. McElroy gave up a leadoff singled in the bottom of the fifth but got out of the inning with no runs scored.
In the sixth McElroy led off with  a double down the first base line then went to third on a wild pitch. Chase VonBargen walked and stole second. Poxleitner reached on an error with McElroy scoring and VonBargen going to third. Schwartz went in to run and stole second. After an out, Gehring walked to load the bases. After a second out, Schlader was hit by a pitch to score VonBargen. Labrum walked to scored Schwartz. Quintal single to score Gehring and make it 9-11. McElroy then hit a fly ball but it was caught for the third out. Kendrick came back with 3 runs in the bottom off the inning on a single, 2 hit batters and a walk to start the inning. Poxleitner moved to the mound and struck out the next 2 hitters then got out of the inning with a fly ball to McElroy in center.
Down 9-14, VonBargen led off the seventh with a walk and Poxleitner singled to right center. Schwartz again went in to run. Warren moved the runners with a groundout. VonBargen scored on a sacrifice fly by Gehring. Seubert was hit by a pitch then the game ended on a groundout.
Prairie had 6 hits in the game led by McElroy who had a double and a single. Warren had a double. Quintal and Seubert each had a single and 2 RBI. Poxleitner had a single and 1 RBI.
Seubert pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed 9 runs on 6 hits with 1 strikeout and 1 hit batsman. McElroy pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed 5 runs on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts, 2 walks and 3 hit batsmen. Poxleitner pitched 1 inning and allowed no runs and no hits with 2 strikeouts.
Prairie takes a record of 14-8 into the Super Regional this weekend.
