Cottonwood’s VFW Post 4902 joined thousands
of veterans across the country on Saturday as part of the national VFW
Day of Service, an annual program created by the Veterans of Foreign
Wars to encourage posts and their members to give back to their
communities through handson volunteer projects. The initiative,
launched by VFW National, highlights the organization’s longstanding
commitment to service beyond the uniform—mobilizing veterans each May
to improve local facilities, support neighbors in need, and strengthen
community ties. Saturday in marked the start of the veteran-led
community service projects to take place throughout the month. Last
year, more than 2,300 events were held worldwide, and this year is on
track to exceed that total.
This year, Post 4902 dedicated its Day of Service project to improving the City Park Baseball Field, focusing on the wellused bleachers that have supported generations of local athletes and families. The project included straightening and refurbishing the metal frames, replacing all the severely worn boards on both sets of bleachers, and pressurewashing the concrete pads to remove years of moss and algae buildup. Post Commander Dave Frei extended a special thankyou to Gem Builders Supply of Cottonwood for donating the materials and to Lafe Waller for photographing the work and final results. Commander Frei and Quartermaster Rick Johnson began the effort several weeks ago, working with other post members to remove the old boards, cut away rusted bolts, straighten and sand the frames, and apply fresh coats of paint. The new boards were also painted in advance, allowing the May 2 Day of Service to focus on final assembly and installation—captured in the photos accompanying this article. Post 4902’s contribution reflects the spirit of the VFW Day of Service: veterans continuing to serve their community with the same dedication they brought to their military service. The refurbished bleachers will be ready for the upcoming baseball season, offering a safer and more welcoming place for families and fans to gather. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some photos submitted by Joe Riener of VFW Post 4902 refurbishing the bleachers at the City Park ballfield. |
