Pirates lose play-in game, still alive for State The Prairie baseball team lost their play-in District opener at C.V. 5-15, Wednesday, April 30. ![]() However, unlike past years, their season isn’t over yet. Due to their high ranking on MaxPreps.com, they have another chance to make it to State by traveling to Kooskia to play C.V., again, for a best 2 out of 3 series May 9-10. The winner advances to the state tournament in Orofino May 15-17. In the play-in game at C.V. the Pirates went down in order in the first inning. Levi McElroy started on the mound and recorded 3 strikeouts in the bottom of the first. With 2 outs, the third batter swung and missed at a ball in the dirt and managed to reach first. A groundout to second ended the inning. Prairie took the lead in the top of the second. Jake Quintal led off with a single to center and stole second. He scored when Collin Ray singled to right. Ray went to second on the throw home. A ground out advanced Ray to third and Ray scored when Kae Quintal singled to left. McElroy seemed to have lost his edge in the second inning as he walked the leadoff hitter and walked 2 more batters. C.V. scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. Prairie went down in order in the third. In the bottom of the third McElroy struggled with command. He hit the first batter but then got a double play as Kade Quintal fielded the ball, stepped on second and threw to first. 6 consecutive baserunners ensued without benefit of a hit as McElroy walked 3 batters and hit 3 others leading to a 4-run inning as C.V. took a 2-5 lead. In the fourth, Jake Quintal singled to right and moved to second on an error. He was sacrificed to third by Ray and then scored on a single by Chris Schumacher to make it 3-5. In the bottom of the inning McElroy gave up a single and a walk and then with a 2-1 count, was lifted in favor of Kade Quintal. Quintal got an out on a popup then 2 errors, a hit batsman, a double and a walk led to a 5-run inning as C.V. took a 3-10 lead. Rehder led off the fifth with a single to left but the next three hitters were put out to end the inning. Quintal got 2 quick outs in the bottom of the inning but a double, single and walk load the bases. He got out of the inning with no runs scored on a groundout to short. In the sixth Jake Quintal led off the inning by reaching on an error. He stole second and went to third on a ground out. He scored on a single to right by Schumacher. Schumacher stole second. After a second out, Devon Poxleitner singled to right. Schumacher was held at third on the play. Prairie pulled off a delayed double steal with Schumacher scoring. C.V. then changed pitchers. Poxleitner went to third on a balk but a strikeout ended the inning. In the bottom of the sixth A hit batsman, walk, infield single, error and 2 doubles allowed C.V. to score 5 runs and end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Prairie had 8 hits in the game with Schumacher having 2 singles and 2 RBI. Jake Quintal had 2 singles. Ray and Kade Quintal each had an RBI single and Poxleitner and Rehder each had a single. McElroy pitched into the fourth inning and gave up 7 runs on just 1 hit with 3 strikeouts, 7 walks and 4 hit batsmen. Quintal pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed 8 runs on 6 hits with 1 strikeout, 3 walks and 2 hit batsmen. Prairie is now 9-7 on the season.
