Pirates lose 2 of 3 at C.V.
The Prairie Baseball season ended Saturday, May 10.
They played Clearwater Valley in a best 2 out of 3 format for a berth at State. On Friday, May 9, they lost to C.V. 3-7. On Saturday, May 10, they won the first game 4-3 to force a winner-take-all game. C.V. won that one 10-20 to end Prairie’s season.
Game 1
In the first game on Friday evening, Prairie took their only lead in the top of the first. With 2 outs, Carter Shears singled to left. Jake Quintal followed with a double to the gap in left center to score Shears and made it 1-0. Jake Quintal hits a double that gives Prairie a 1-0 lead in the opener agaisnt C.V.
C.V. came right back in the bottom of the first. Kade Quintal hit the C.V. leadoff hitter with his first pitch of the game. He stole second while Quintal was striking out the next hitter. After an infield single, a groundout scored the tying run. A 2-run homer then gave C.V. a 1-3 lead.
In the second inning Devon Poxleitner had a 1-out double but was stranded.
In the bottom of the inning a walk and a single put 2 runners on but a forceout and 2 strikeouts kept C.V. from scoring.
Prairie went down in order in the third inning.
C.V. added a run in the third without benefit of a hit. A leadoff walk was followed by a forceout. After a stolen base, the runner moved to third when a strikeout had to be completed with a throw to first. After a walk, an error on a steal attempt led to the run.
Prairie got back into the game in the fourth thanks to 3 errors by the Rams. With one out Collin Ray reached on an error and stole second. Kade Quintal attempted to sacrifice Ray to third and an error by the pitcher allowed Ray to score and Quintal to go to second. A balk moved him to third and an errant pickoff throw allowed Quintal to score and cut the deficit to 1 at 3-4.
C.V. got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff single and a 2-out triple.
Prairie went down in order in the fifth.
C.V. added on in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff ground rule double. A groundout moved him to third and he scored on an error in an attempt to put him out at third.
In the sixth Prairie had a threat as Ray singled to right and Poxleitner hit a 2-out single to center. The inning ended though on a forceout at third.
C.V. added another run in the sixth. A 1-out walk saw Kade Quintal hit the pitch limit. Jake Quintal came in and got a second out but a wild pitch allowed the runner to score. After a pair of walks, a fly ball to right ended the inning.
Prairie got a 2-out walk by Chris Schumacher in the seventh but a strikeout then ended the game.
Kade Quintal gave up 7 runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts, 1 hit batsman and 6 walks in 5 1/3 innings. Jake Quintal gave up no runs and no hits with 2 walks in 2/3 of an inning.
Prairie had 5 hits led by Poxleitner who had a double and a single. Jake Quintal had a double and an RBI. Shears and Ray each had a single.

Game 2
In the game on Saturday morning, Phil Schwartz had his best pitching outing of the season as he pitched all 7 innings and allowed the Rams just 3 runs.
It was much better than his previous outing against the Rams at Cottonwood on April 24 when he was roughed up for 18 runs.
Prairie was the home team for this game and Schwartz gave up a leadoff single but picked the runner off first. After a second single, a pair of popups got Prairie out of the inning with no runs scoring.
Schwartz then led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and Schumacher followed with a walk. A wild pitch moved the runners over. After an out, Jake Quintal grounded out to second with Schwartz scoring.
In the second, an error with 2 outs gave C.V. their only baserunner. A groundout to short then ended the inning.
Prairie went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
In the third, Schwartz gave up a 1-out double but a groundout and a short fly ball to short got him out of the inning.
In the bottom of the third Schwartz drew a 1-out walk. Schumacher followed with a double but Schwartz had to hold at third. After a second out, Schwartz scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
In the fourth C.V. got a 1-out double but a pop up to second and a line out to second ended the inning.
Prairie went down in order in the bottom of the 4th.
2 errors in the fifth led to C.V.’s first run of the game. The leadoff batter reached on an error. After there were 2 outs, another error allowed the run to score to make it 2-1.
Max Rehder led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and made it to third on an error. However A strikeout ended the inning.
In the sixth, C.V. got a 2-out base runner on a hit batsman but Schwartz struck out the next hitter to end the inning.
Prairie added a pair of huge insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Shears led off with a walk and Jake Quintal singled to right with Shears advancing to third. Ray executed a squeeze bunt to score Shears with Quintal going to second. Poxleitner then singled to right to score Quintal and made it 4-1.
In the seventh C.V. got a leadoff walk. A wild pitch moved the runner to second. After an out another wild pitch advanced the runner to third. A single scored him. The baserunner stole second and then attempted to steal third. An error on the pickoff attempt allowed him to score and cut the Pirates’ lead to 4-3. After a walk and a single put the tying and go-ahead runners on, Schwartz got the game-ending out on a ground-out to third baseman Jake Quintal.
Schwartz gave up 3 runs, 2 of them earned on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 hit batsman.
Prairie had 4 hits led by Schumacher with a double. Jake Quintal and Poxleitner each had a single and an RBI. Rehder had a single and Ray had an RBI.

Game 3
In the winner-take-all third game Prairie, down 1 regular pitcher due to a disciplinary action, basically ran out of pitching as C.V. was able to 10-run them for the win.
Prairie again scored first as Schumacher walked with 1 out in the top of the first and Jake Quintal hit a 2-out single to left to score Schumacher. Ray singled to center and Poxleitner singled to left to score Quintal for a 2-0 lead.
Jake Quintal started on the mound and after getting a leadoff out, walked the bases loaded. A single to center scored C.V.’s first run. After a strikeout, a wild pitch tied the game. 2 more walks led to the go-ahead run. Schumacher went in to pitch and got the third out.
In the second, Rehder led off with an infield hit. After an out, Schwartz doubled to left to score Rehder and tie the game.
In the bottom of the second, a hit by pitch and a walk started the inning. An error on a steal attempt scored the go-ahead run. After a walk, Ray was put in to pitch. He gave up a double for 2 more runs. After an out, a single made it 3-7. A caught stealing was the second out but a single, error, walk and another error led to 2 more runs and a 3-9 lead for the Rams.
In the third Prairie got a single each from Jake Quintal, Ray and Poxleitner to load the bases with 1 out. Kade Quintal walked to score his brother Jake. Rehder reached on an error to score Ray. After a second out, C.V. changed pitchers and the new pitcher hit Schwartz with a pitch to score Poxleitner and make it 6-9. A balk scored Kade Quintal to make it 7-9. Schumacher walked to re-load the bases but the inning ended on a popup.
In the bottom of the third a walk and a single put runners on first and third. A passed ball scored another run for the Rams. After an out, a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases. A forceout at second allowed another run to score. A double scored 2 more runs to make it 7-15 after 3 innings.r
Jake Quintal led off the fourth with a single. Ray reached on an error with Quintal advancing to third. Poxleitner grounded to first and reached but Jake Quintal was thrown out at home trying to score. Kade Quintal singled to score Ray. After a strikeout, Noah Geis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Schwartz singled to score Poxleitner. Prairie pulled off a triple steal as Kade Quintal scored while Geis went to third and Schwartz went to second. Schumacher walked to re-load the bases. A groundout ended the inning with Prairie down 10-15.
A walk, triple and an error scored 2 more runs for C.V. as they made it 10-17. After a double play, 2 more walks loaded the bases before Ray got out of the inning with a groundout.
Prairie went down in order in the fifth.
In the bottom of the inning, C.V. needed 3 runs to end the game. Poxleitner went in to pitch and got a strikeout then hit a batter. An error followed then a wild pitch made it 10-18. After a walk, a balk scored a run to make it 10-19. An intentional walk loaded the bases to set up a force at any base. However a single then ended the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Jake Quintal gave up 3 runs on 1 hit with 1 strikeout and 5 walks in 2/3 of an inning. Schumacher gave up 3 runs on no hits with a hit batter and a walk in 1/3 of an inning. Ray gave up 11 runs on 7 hits with 7 walks and a hit batsman in 3 innings. Poxleitner gave up 3 runs on 1 hit with 1 strikeout, 2 walks and 2 hit batsmen in 2/3 of an inning.
Prairie had 11 hits led by Jake Quintal who had 3 singles and an RBI. Schwartz had a double and a single and 3 RBI. Poxleitner had 2 singles and an RBI. Ray had 2 singles. Kade Quintal had a single and 2 RBI. Rehder had a single and an RBI.
Prairie ends their season with a record of 10-9.
