To the Library and Beyond Thank you, everyone, for attending Tuesday’s first-of-four 40th Anniversary Open House events. It was a lot of fun and we appreciate your attendance. We’re moving full steam ahead on the next event on Thursday 19 June – from 11-3 PM. Special programming begins at 1:30 PM when Mr. Tobe Finch, owner of Happy Day Corporation and Happy Day Local in Lewiston will be giving an exciting talk, Farm to Table Meats & More. Why are we so excited about 40 years of the library’s existence? Here’s one reason: We’re a rare library. Rare – not only to have survived forty years as an independent library [entirely staffed by volunteers], but rare because we are one of only seven such non-tax-supported libraries in the entire state. In comparison, across Idaho there are 172 tax-supported libraries. Our existence, and longevity, is something for our communities to take pride in and to celebrate. Joan has reviewed the 1974 book, Hunters Of the Whale, which received the New York Academy of Sciences Children’s Science book award. Authored by Ruth Kirk and Washington State University Professor Richard D. Daugherty, the book details many significant prehistoric artifacts including artwork, whale memorabilia, and a large house. In the 1960s, Professor Daugherty discovered and conducted, with his grad students, archaeological excavation of historic remains of a Makah Native American site on the Olympic peninsula of Washington state. Through the artwork, the whale-hunting livelihood of the Natives is depicted; in all, more than 20,000 items were retrieved from the site. May is National Mobility Awareness Month, “[to celebrate the achievements and potential of people with disabilities who use mobility solutions to live active and independent lives.]” Tuesday 20 is World Bee Day; on Wednesday we observe the richness of global cultures; Saturday we celebrate Brothers’ Day. “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to facilitate visionary thinking throughout the organization. Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. Volunteers are always welcome. Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service. Thank you all! | COTTONWOOD
