Pirates bring home 4 gold medals
The Prairie track and field team had 4 event state championships plus a team second place trophy, all by the girls team.
Earning championship medals were Sage Elven in both the shot put and discus, Aubree Geis in the 400 meter dash and the girls 4x400 meter relay.
Elven won the discus for the fourth straight year with a toss of 138’4”. She won the shot put for the first time ever and set a new school record with a toss of 42’6½”. She also placed third in the javelin with a toss of 111’1”.
Geis came from behind to win the 400 over defending state champion Chloe Jankovic of Logos. She won with a time of 59.73, 0.07 ahead of Jankovic.
Geis and Jankovic met up again in the 4x400. Tori Shears ran the first leg and was middle of the pack when she handed off to Kennedy Riener. Riener passed a couple of runners before handing off to Sydney Shears. Sydney handed a lead off to Geis for the anchor leg. Jankovic passed Geis around the first turn and may have used too much energy doing so. Geis took the lead back in the final straightaway and wound up win by almost 2 second in 4:08.88.
The 4x400 win was critical for the girls team as they trailed Victory Charter by 3 2/3 points going into the race. With Prairie finishing first and Victory Charter fourth, Prairie gained 5 points on them and moved into second in the final team standings.
