The Summer Reading Program for tots through teens has begun.  No registration required.  Kids can join the fun at any time.  This year’s program is centered on reading and word fun with a Cootie Bug catcher theme.  Come to the library to pick up your foldable Cootie Bug catcher that reveals the reading objectives for your folks to sign when each goal is completed.  Bring your completed Cootie Bug catcher back to the library to get ten tickets for chances to win a Reading prize basket of your choice.  As a BONUS, each time you visit the library during the summer you get another ticket, so we hope to see lots of kids and families this summer!  All prizes will be awarded on August 12th.
Joan has reviewed the 2012 book, Hiking the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, by Scott Steinberg.  This book is a comprehensive guide to the 2,000 miles of trails within the more-than 1.3 million acres of this wilderness, which became a National Wilderness Area in 1964 with the passage of the National Wilderness Act.  Between 1964 and 2012, Mr. Steinberg hiked each of the 81 trails that he described.  The different wilderness sections include the northern and southern Bitterroot canyons, the western approaches to the wilderness, the Magruder Corridor, Elk summit country, and others.  For each trail, the author described its length, difficulty, elevation gain and loss, water availability, and starting location, as well as a general trail description.  In addition, this book contains several color photos of the beautiful scenery within the wilderness area.
June is National Ocean appreciation Month, because the oceans of the world provide an estimated average of 67 percent of the Earth’s oxygen supply.  And just because there are no significant historical dates this week:  “The Epic Of Gilgamesh [is considered the oldest literary text in the world.  It began as a series of Sumerian poems and tales dating back to 2100 B.C.; the most complete version was written during the 1100s B.C. by the Babylonians.]”  The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library are committed to a continual conversation among staff and volunteers about the organization’s direction and priorities.  "Service is what life is all about."
Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com.  “Volunteering expands our resumes and improves our confidence.”  Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.  Thank you all!
