To the Library and Beyond Thursday's open house & guest speaker brought a nice crowd. We gave away some special door prizes. Chris Maestas won a pass to the Border Days Rodeo. We thank the Border Days Committee for their generous donation of the Family Night Pass. We extend a big thank-you to Uhlorn Family Farms for donating a bag of flour and a bag of oats for prizes, to Legacy Beef for their discount, and to Tobe Finch for his gratis presentation, also. Most of all, we thank Frances Conklin who is the wisdom, vision, and power behind these events. Joan has reviewed the 2016 book, Idaho Wilderness Considered, edited by Murray Feldman and Jennifer Davidson, and she considers it a fascinating read. This book is a series of essays by various Idaho residents about the enjoyment of recreational benefits afforded by the wilderness areas of the state. It details the 50-year history of pro-wilderness actions by the wilderness proponents and their activities in getting the latest new wilderness areas designated by congress. One author describes the legacy of pro-wilderness actions by the late Senator Frank Church. Another author interviewed former Idaho governor and U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Cecil Andrus, concerning his efforts on behalf of the Boulder-White Cloud Mountains, which became Idaho’s latest wilderness area in 2015. All of the authors express their fondness for the Idaho backcountry. Idaho has more wilderness than any other state in the lower 48. This month, on Tuesday 22 July, Prairie Community Library will hold our third event in celebration of FORTY YEARS of continuous operation; more details to come. Friday 4 July is Independence Day: To celebrate our Nation’s Independence Day we want to thank you for your many thoughtful donations that have allowed Prairie Community Library to remain in operation as an independent corporation. We assure you that your donations are greatly appreciated as they provide for daily operations and support a growing fund for a brighter future. The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to connect ideas with people to promote innovation and problem-solving, and to encourage visionary thinking. “Volunteering helps us build our networks and improves our physical and mental health and wellbeing.” Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service. Thank you all! | COTTONWOOD
