To the Library and Beyond states will be buried on July 4th at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, PA. The park encompasses Independence Hall, the building where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and signed, the famed Liberty Bell, & more sites important to the Revolutionary War & our nation’s independence from British rule. Idaho’s contribution to the time capsule is two Idaho garnets, one in raw form and the other cut to reveal the beauty of the stone as a star garnet. At the library our theme this summer is all things patriotic. Opening today is our month-long exhibit of military uniforms loaned from community members. Please stop by to see them and perhaps learn more about friends and neighbors who served. Items range from WWII era, Vietnam, and more recent times of service. At next Tuesday’s July 7 story hour we’ll enjoy a visit from a special patriotic guest. The Idaho Potato Commission will introduce one of several America 250 in Idaho Ambassadors – Spud Oliver Ellsworth. Ellsworth was a founder of our country, framing the U.S. Constitution & author of the act that established our federal judicial system. He served as the third US chief justice and even ran, unsuccessfully, for president in 1796. We’re not sure when during the hour Spud Ellsworth will arrive. We invite all to visit for this presentation. And we invite your visit to check out items from our special displays of books pertaining to America’s founding and its important enduring institutions. Summer Reading program kids are doing patriotic reading and activity challenges. Why not we adults brush up on our country’s founding history as well?!
