To the Library and Beyond Joan’s book review this week is titled, “Lost Mines and Treasures of the Pacific Northwest”, by author Ruby El Hult. This is a book with stories of many lost gold, silver, and gem mines in the Pacific Northwest states of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The author has written here the many tales passed down through the 19th and 20th centuries through word-of-mouth and hand-to-hand. These mines and treasures have (at least at publication time in 1957) never been recovered. It’s possible that the word-of-mouth stories may eventually also be lost, so this is a valuable book for those still interested in hunting for lost treasure. In Idaho, some of the mine and treasure names are the following: “Lost Green Diggings”, “Post Falls Diamond Mine”, “Lost Spanish Silver Mine”, “Lost Opal Mine”, “Rusted Wheelbarrow Mine”, “Lost Swim Mine”, “Booger Cat Mine”, “Mud Lake Cache”, and others. This is a great book for people interested in reading about lost treasure! It’s also a great starting point for those folks who might be interested in trying to find some of these treasures.
