To the Library and Beyond
Prairie Community Library, Inc. – Your nonprofit, all volunteer source.
In the first six months of this year, we have added a record five hundred books, audiobooks, DVDs and CDs to the library shelves.  Come browse the new arrival special section to find James Patterson, Debbie Macomber, CJ Box, & Kristin Hannah titles for example.  Or select from new non-fiction books such as Katie Couric’s autobiography, a diabetic cookbook, western or Idaho history, and other interesting subjects such as arctic exploration.  We’re happy to explore the database to help find a particular author, title, or subject.  And don’t forget to browse the audio, large print, and movie shelves.
Kids are enjoying checking out new titles on their shelves, also.  Story hour for youngsters continues on Tuesdays from 10-11 AM.  No registration required; just drop in with the kids and be ready for an hour of fun stories and activities.  Meet the new big huggable furry critter, too!
Joan has reviewed the 1999 book, Isaac’s Storm, by Eric Larson.  This is an account of a very deadly hurricane that hit Galveston Island, Texas, in the Gulf of Mexico in early September 1900.  Mr. Larson tells about Isaac Cline, the local National Weather Service chief-meteorologist – and several others who failed to predict the approach and landfall of the storm.  In 1900, this was the deadliest hurricane that had ever hit anywhere in the U. S.  The author details the approach of the storm, the lack of advance warning and the faulty weathercasts; how, at that time, weather bureau meteorologists were limited by lack of technological equipment, as well as inadequate understanding of hurricane dynamics and tracking.  The author then details the storm itself: the way it affected the island, the destruction of many of Galveston’s buildings and homes, and the tremendous number of lives lost.  This is an eye-opening revelation of the limited technology and weather-predictability of the year 1900.
Monday 1 September is Labor Day.  As we celebrate Labor Day in appreciation of all citizens whose labor has made our country strong we want to thank you for your many thoughtful donations.  We assure you that your donations are greatly appreciated as they provide for daily operations and they support a growing fund for a brighter future.  The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to join forces with partners and projects that complement our mission of service and our purpose of enhancing literary benefits to our communities.  "Service is what life is all about."
Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com.  “Volunteering keeps our minds and bodies active.”  Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.  Thank you all!
