Pirates win big over Deary The Prairie Pirates rolled to a 58-8 win over Deary in their season opener at Cottonwood Friday, August 29. ![]() The Pirates scored on 5 of their 6 first half possessions as they built a 38-0 halftime lead. Prairie received the opening kickoff and took over at their own 31. Chris Schumacher picked up 16 yards on the first play from scrimmage and Levi Gehring followed with a 10-yard run. Junior quarterback Kade Quintal then threw a short pass to the right to Schumacher who picked up another first down with an 18 yard gain. Quintal then passed to Levi McElroy for a 13 yard gain to move the ball to the 12. Schumacher gained 8 yards on a run to the right. Gehring then went up the middle for 4 yards and the first touchdown of the game. Gehring then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0. Deary made 1 first down on their possession before turning the ball over on downs at their own 47. Quintal scrambled for 19 years on first down to move the ball to the 28. After 2 plays netted -1 yard, Quintal tossed a screen pass to the left to Schumacher who raced down the sidelines and into the end zone for a 29 yard scoring play. Gehring again ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-0. Deary started their next possession at their own 13 after they were unable to handle Lane Mader’s kickoff and had to start their kickoff return at the 6. Deary moved out to the 23 where a false start set them back 5 yards. On the next play Schumacher tipped Deary quarterback Jarrett Keen’s pass and McElroy intercepted at the 26 and returned the ball to the 24. Two plays later Quintal threw a pass to Peyton Stamper to the left and Stamper went 22 yards for his first varsity touchdown. Quintal then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0 with 1:33 left in the first quarter. Deary’s next possession didn’t last long as they fumbled the ball away on their first play after the kickoff return. Gehring recovered the ball at the Deary 15. However, a holding penalty and a 10 yard loss on a sack moved Prairie back to the 26. A fourth down pass attempt fell incomplete and Deary took over on downs. Deary was unable to move the ball and punted back to the Pirates. Gehring fielded the punt at the 50 and returned it to the Deary 25 but a penalty for an illegal block brought it back to their own 49. Gehring had a big gain on the next play but a holding penalty called most of it back. Quintal then completed a screen pass to the left to Schumacher that went for 30 yards down to the Deary 23. Another holding penalty 2 plays later pushed Prairie back to the 33. On the ensuing play it appeared that disaster had struck as the center snap sailed over Quintal’s head. Quintal was able to retrieve the ball back at about the 45 and then was able to carry the ball for a 22 yard gain and a first down at the 11. Quintal picked up 2 yards on the next play and then tossed to Gehring who took the ball around left end for a touchdown. The 2-point pass failed as Prairie now led 30-0. Deary had to punt again on their next possession and Prairie took over at the Deary 46. On the next play Gehring took the ball around the left side, evaded several tacklers and hurdled a defender laying on the ground on his way to a 46 yard touchdown. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to make it 38-0. Deary had their biggest gain of the first half on their next possession with a 31 yard pass completion. A 13 yard loss 3 plays later forced them to punt again. The first half ended on the punt play. Deary had the ball to start the second half and wound up having to punt on 4th and 11. Prairie took over at their own 45. Two plays later Quintal passed to McElroy for a 31 yard gain to the Deary 21. Prairie then ran 5 straight running plays with Schumacher scoring the touchdown from the 1. Gehring ran in the 2-pointer to make it 46-0. That invoked the running clock mercy rule for the final 18:30 of the game. Mader’s ensuing kickoff went into the end zone and Deary started tat their own 20. They wound up turning the ball over on downs at the 29 as Keen was stopped just short. Prairie put their second unit offense on the field with Stamper and Marshall Weber in at running backs and McElroy moving from receiver to quarterback. Stamper appeared to have scored on a 23 yard run but it was called back on a holding penalty. McElroy then completed a 9 yard pass to Stamper and a 14 yard pass to Cooper Riener to convert the first down at the 11. Weber gained 2 yards then Stamper went up the middle for his second touchdown of the game. The 2-point try came up short as Prairie now led 52-0 early in the fourth quarter. Deary then put together their only scoring drive of the game against Prairie’s 2nd team defense. They went 75 yards in 9 plays and added the 2-pointer to make it 52-8 with 5:18 to play. Weber had a 40 yard return on the kickoff to set Prairie up at the Deary 39. On third and 10, freshman Isaiah Warren scored his first varsity touchdown on a 39 yard run. The 2-point run came up short leaving Prairie with a 58-8 lead. Time ran out on the ensuing kickoff return. Gehring wound up with 80 yards rushing on 10 carries.
