To the Library and Beyond
Prairie Community Library, Inc. – Your nonprofit, all volunteer source!  We would like to take this opportunity to extend hearty thanks to each of you volunteers who has done so much for Prairie Community Library.  “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they have great hearts.”
Joan has reviewed the 2013 book, Leaded – The poisoning of Idaho’s Silver Valley, by Michael C. Mix.  In this book Mr. Mix tells the story of the development and operations of the Bunker Hill Mine in the north Idaho area of Coeur d’Alene and Kellogg.  The author recounted the mine’s history from its discovery in 1885 until its closure in 1981.  During the entire time of its operations, the mine created and dispersed a huge amount of air- and water-pollution in the area.  The author related information about several lawsuits over the years as well as ongoing and progressive environmental regulation in attempts to curb the pollution.  Mr. Mix also reviewed the effects of the extensive lead pollution on people, and described the lead poisoning of the area’s children during the mid-1970s.  After the mine closed in 1981, it was designated a Superfund site by the EPA, and the author reports the area cleanup efforts.  This story is a disturbing one which leads this reader to question why such pollution was ever allowed to occur.
On Sunday 7 September we will celebrate Grandparent’s Day.  On Thursday 11 September - Patriot Day - we remember 2001 and how brave Americans thwarted some of the terrorist plots.
Thanks to all our volunteers, Prairie Community Library was open 13 days in August; although we had less than our average number of total visitors, we served 60 children (average 11); story hour attendance 86 (average 54); issued 8 library cards (average 6); and added 112 items (average 37).
The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library are committed to continue our mission of serving the literary needs of our communities, accepting and accommodating whatever changes are necessary.
Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com.  “Volunteering can provide job prospects.”  Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.  Thank you all!
