School Board meets
The school board approved hiring of several open positions, mostly coaches, at their September meeting Monday, Sept. 15. Noah Behler was approved for hire for the open Elementary School paraprofessional. Teel Bruner was approved as the varsity girls basketball coach while Jamie Scheffler was approved as the JV girls basketball coach. Justin Jones, who held the position a few years ago, was approved as JV boys basketball coach. Dustin Behler was approved as high school baseball head coach with Garrett Beckman approved as assistant baseball coach. Ashle Behler was approved as softball coach. Lisa Riener was approved as a partial high school athletic director. She was already performing several AD duties and the board wanted to make it official. Approved with the consent agenda were the resignations of Bruner as JV boys basketball coach and Scheffler as 8th grade girls coach. Positions still open are the 8th grade girls coach, junior high wrestling coach and high school assistant softball coach. The board approved the continuous improvement plan for the district. This can be found on the district website. The board approved keeping the meeting dates and times the same. They will remain on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The graduation dress code was discussed. Superintendent Jon Rehder presented a proposed policy. The board decided to table this until next month so they can study it further. Gus Hoene’s resignation as Zone 3 trustee was accepted. Hoene had spent close to 19 years on the board. The board set a special meeting date of Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. to interview candidates to fill the board vacancy. The board then spent some time discussing the application and questions for potential board candidates. Rehder said there has been interest expressed from a couple of people. Several policies were approved upon their second reading. Another group of 3 policies dealing with the video required by the legislature to be shown to all students 5th grade and older was tabled until the October meeting. The senior project presentation by Sydney Shears was also postponed to the October meeting as she wasn’t completely ready yet. In the junior/senior high Matt Elven reported the enrollment is currently at 206 for grades 7-12. That is 1 more than last year. He reported the phone free Fridays seem to be going better than expected. The ASB officers have planned some activities for Friday lunches to help with student engagement but Elven reported they didn’t do the one originally planned for last Friday as the students were busy hanging out and chatting with each other. There has been a lot of positive feedback from parents. MAP testing was done Sept. 4-12. He is feeling good about results so far. They should have full results by next week. LCSC will have a representative here on Sept. 17 for dual credit registration. They had over 70 signed up last year and expect similar numbers this year. The FFA chapter currently has 12 high school and 7 junior high students. There are 10 applications to form the officer team. Ms. Flick has identified 8 events for the chapter to participate in throughout the year. The first is an event at Nezperce. Elven talked about driver’s education. Eric Coffelt will start offering the driving portion starting this week. With the classroom portion being done mostly through IDLA and the legislature approving that the driving portion can now be done with parents, they are looking at possibly discontinuing driver’s education through the school. Jon Rehder reported the open house was very well attended with 192 of 217 students attending with their families. ASB elections are taking place this week at the Elementary School. The state has gone to a new test. Amira testing is AI and the students talk to their computers to answer questions. The elementary is also doing MAP testing this month. In his facilities report Rehder reported the window project at the high school is nearly finished. Some minor items still need finished up. The next project is replacement of window blinds on the inside of the building as they are all broken, bent strings missing, etc. They will work on a timeline to get these done. The heat wave the first week of school was too much for some of the AC units. Casey Metz’ room at the high school needs a new compressor. Vikki Riener/Michelle Bledsoe’s room at the elementary needed freon in their AC unit. Andrea Brannan’s classroom needed a new circuit board. The mini-split in the high school kitchen was not staying cool as pipes were pinched. It is working now. Jennifer Riener’s mini-split in the elementary office was leaking water. Rick Forsmann thought a drain valve may be plugged. He is working on all of them. The new announcer booth stairs and door at the football/track complex have been built. They were installed Aug. 29. Donation and athletic fund monies were used to pay for this. They received two bids on carpet for the upper classrooms and breezeway at the elementary school. Bettie’s Floors and Décor at Grangeville was the low bidder. They will do the multi-purpose room during spring break and the rest after school gets out on June 8. In his superintendent’s report Rehder talked about discussion of a 6th bus route. There are two additional families up the hill on Cottonwood Butte. 3 years ago they combined the former Cottonwood Butte and Ferdinand routes. Adding these families would make the bus route excessively long. Rehder talked with the families and offered to pay them in lieu of taking a bus up there. The estimated $300/month is much less than the cost of sending the bus up there. In enrollment they went from 418 students since the last meeting to 430 as of the first week of school. This is 7 more than last year. The meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m. The next regular meeting is set for Monday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. |
