Pirates lose at Kamiah The Prairie Pirates suffered their first loss of the season in a defensive battle at Kamiah, Friday, Sept. 19. The final score was 12-22. ![]() Prairie lost despite outgaining the Kubs 355-205 in total yardage. Turnovers and penalties hurt the Prairie effort. Kamiah received the opening kickoff and a 13 yard loss due to a bad snap led to a punt. Prairie took over at their own 49. The Pirates picked up a couple of first down with Levi Gehring picking up 11 yards on 2 runs and Levi McElroy catching a pass for 14 yards that moved the ball to the Kamiah 21. The drive stalled and Kade Quintal’s 4th quarter pass fell incomplete. Kamiah took over at the 21 and got a 30 yard pass play to move to midfield before they had to punt thanks to a sack by Chris Schumacher of Kamiah quarterback Lawson Landmark. Prairie took over at their own 6 after the punt and picked up a first down on a 10 yard pass to McElroy. A penalty against Kamiah moved the ball to the 29. Schumacher picked up 8 yards but on the next play fumbled and Kamiah recovered at the Prairie 41. Kamiah scored in just 4 plays thanks in part to a 15 yard facemask penalty against the Pirates. Logan Keen scored on a 15 yard run as the first quarter ended and Kamiah added the 2-pointer on a pass play. Kamiah’s kickoff went out of bounds and Prairie had them re-kick from the 35 after a 5 yard penalty. That backfired on the Pirates as a holding penalty on the return set them back to their own 16. Prairie got a big play on first down as Quintal connected with McElroy on a fly pattern for 45 yards to the Kamiah 29. McElroy then picked up 4 yards on a run and Gehring converted the first down with a 6 yard run. An 8 yard completion to Peyton Stamper moved the ball to the 11. Gehring picked up 2 to set up first and goal at the 9. Quintal ran an option on the next play and scored for the 9. The 2-point pass attempt failed leaving Prairie with a 6-8 deficit. A sack for an 8 yard loss with Schumacher and Benny Secrest combining on the tackle had Kamiah facing fourth and 6 from their own 39. They decided to go for it and Schumacher batted the pass down giving Prairie the ball. A holding penalty killed a big gain by Gehring and Prairie wound up turning the ball over on downs at the 42. Kamiah got a 38 yard run from Keen and then Landmark passed to Todd Roberts for 20 yards and a touchdown. Landmark ran in the 2 pointer to give the Kubs a 6-16 lead. Prairie’s next possession ended in an interception with Kamiah taking over at their 38. 3 plays later, Gehring intercepted Landmark’s pass to give the Pirates the ball at their own 48. On third and 2 a bad connection on a pitchout gave Kamiah the ball back on a turnover at the 50. Kamiah gained just 1 yard in 3 plays and punted again. Prairie gained 23 yards on a screen pass to Schumacher and then Stamper caught a pass as the buzzer sounded to end the half. He went 17 yards but was tackled well short of the end zone. Prairie received the second half kickoff with Gehring returning the ball 27 yards to the 45. Prairie picked up 3 first downs on a 10 yard run by Gehring, a 2-yard run by Gehring on third and inches and an 11 yard pass play to Gehring to move the ball to the Kamiah 15. At that point the drive stalled and Prairie turned the ball over on downs at the 14.
Kamiah was forced to punt from their own 28 and Prairie too over at their 47. Prairie tried to change things up by having McElroy go in at quarterback. He picked up 7 on a first down keeper and Gehring added 3 for a first down. On 4th and 9 from the 42, McElroy wound up having to run on a called pass play and was stopped about 2 inches short of a first down at the Kamiah 33. Kamiah got a 55 yard gain on a screen pass to moved to the Prairie 10 yard line. Kamiah scored on a 13 yard run 2 plays later. The 2-point try was stopped short by Schumacher but Kamiah now led 6-22. Prairie had to punt on their next possession. Kamiah also had to punt. Prairie took over at their own 35. They picked up a first down on a 10-yard run by McElroy on third and 1. However a fumble on the next play gave Kamiah the ball on their own 46. The Kubs picked up 29 yards as they moved the ball to the Prairie 24. Then they started going backwards. A 4 yard loss on a running play was followed by a sack by Ashton Martin for a loss of 22 yards. Landmark was then hit in the backfield for another 5 yard loss and Kamiah wound up punting from their own 45. Prairie took over at their own 17. Quintal went back in at quarterback and picked up 8 on first down. On third and 2 he completed a pass to Gehring over the middle for 14 yards. An 8 yard loss on a sack had Prairie facing fourth and 12 at the 37. Quintal passed to McElroy for 30 yards to the Kamiah 33. On the next play Prairie wound up with McElroy and Cooper Riener within 5 yards of each other near the goal line. Quintal’s pass wound up being caught by Riener at about the 6 and he took it into the end zone. Prairie’s 2-point pass fell incomplete. Prairie tried an onside kick but Kamiah picked up the ball on the bounce and returned it to the Prairie 21. They were able to then run out the clock. Prairie had 133 yards rushing on 42 attempts.
