Mader celebrates 30 years at NICI North
Idaho Correctional Institution (NICI) recently celebrated a major
milestone for Correctional Officer Kenney Mader who has been with the
Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) for 30 years. Working in
corrections was a family affair for Kenney, who was first encouraged to
apply by his mother who worked at NICI for 20 years. Kenney started his
career at Idaho Correctional Institution – Orofino (ICIO) on April 8,
1996, and remembers thinking to himself as he walked through the gates
and heard them click shut behind him on his first day “What the heck
did I get myself in to?”, little did he know he was at the beginning of
his long tenure as a correctional officer. He started in Orofino and after six months was able to transfer to NICI, and he’s been a fixture here ever since. He’s very proud of his record of not calling in sick in almost 4 years. Kenney is a cornerstone on every shift he works; he’s also the property officer and is always a go-to for staff who have questions about policies or procedures, even from years ago. Kenney brings an upbeat and positive attitude to the compound. Kenney says the best thing about this job is trying to help the residents so they are successful once they leave, however the true best thing to come of his time here is probably that he met his wonderful wife who also works at NICI. Outside of the locked gates Kenney is an avid sports fan, enjoys working with cattle (and his friends) at the Cottonwood Sales Yard, and spending time with his family and friends camping, four-wheeling, and just enjoying life. The staff at NICI wish to congratulate CO Mader and thank him for his 30 years of service with IDOC!
